Can Tenax Extraction Be Used as a Surrogate Exposure Metric for Laboratory-Based Bioaccumulation Tests Using Marine Sediments?

The Tenax technique was used as an alternative exposure metric to assess the bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from contaminated marine sediments. The sediments used were collected from 2 Superfund sites, New Bedford Harbor (MA, USA) and Gould Island (RI, USA). No sieving was conducted for either sediment after arrival, and sediments were stored in stainless steel drums at 2.8 to 4.0 °C in the dark until use. Exhaustive chemical extractions, single-point 24-h Tenax extractions, and 14-d bioaccumulation tests using the amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus were conducted for both s

Assessment of metal contamination, bioavailability, toxicity and bioaccumulation in extreme metallic environments (Iberian Pyrite Belt) using Corbicula fluminea.

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Iberian Peninsula) has intense mining activity. Currently, its fluvial networks receive extremely acid lixiviate residue discharges that are rich in sulphates and metals in solution (acid mine drainage, AMD) from abandoned mines. In the current study, the sediment and water quality were analysed in three different areas of the Odiel River to assess the risk associated with the metal content and its speciation and bioavailability. Furthermore, sediment contact bioassays were performed using the freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea to determine its adequacy as a biomoni

Cadmium bioaccumulation in Mediterranean spider crab (Maya squinado): human consumption and health implications for exposure in Italian population.

Cd bioaccumulation pattern was investigated in Mediterranean spider crab (Maya squinado, Herbst, 1788) collected from the northern Adriatic Sea. Specimens were caught in the framework of a monitoring plan in order to quantify the Cd distribution into different organs and tissues of crab. For this purpose, Cd level was studied in appendages, cephalothorax, abdomen as well as gonads. Cd concentrations were found largely below the Maximum Level (ML) established at the European Union (EU) level for muscle from crab appendages (found mean 0.011 mg kg(-1)) and approximately amounted to 2% of the EU

Tissue-Specific Biomarkers and Bioaccumulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis: Seasonal Anthropogenic Stress in the North Ionian Sea (Calabria, Italy).

Coastal ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities, highlighting the need for sensitive tools to assess environmental risk. An active biomonitoring approach, using the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), was employed to evaluate anthropogenic chemical contamination in the North Ionian Sea, a still poorly studied area, by comparing mussel health status before (PrePT) and after (PostPT) the peak tourist season. Bioaccumulation of metal(loid)s was quantified in whole organisms. Oxidative stress was assessed in the gills and digestive gland through catalase (CAT), sup

Nobiletin-rich Citrus depressa Peel extract enhances detoxification-related responses and reduces benzo[a]pyrene bioaccumulation in rats.

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a carcinogenic food contaminant formed during thermal processing. Citrus depressa peel, a processing byproduct rich in polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) including nobiletin (NOB), was evaluated for detoxification-related effects in rats. C. depressa peel ethanol extract (CDHPE) was characterized, and its effects on xenobiotic metabolism and B[a]P disposition were assessed. NOB showed measurable oral bioavailability and multi-tissue distribution. Dietary CDHPE or NOB for 7 days increased hepatic phase I/II enzyme activities and intestinal CYP1A1 activity, accompanied by incre

Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) Kidneys Across Urban and Rural Habitats in Meknes, Morocco.

This study investigates the bioaccumulation of heavy metals, specifically zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd), in the kidneys of house sparrows (Passer domesticus) across various urban and rural sites in Meknes, Morocco. Fifty adult sparrows were captured from different locations, including an industrial zone (IZ), a bus station (SS), a city center (TC), a major road (MR), and a reference rural site (Ref), to assess spatial variations in metal concentrations. The analysis revealed significant differences in bioaccumulation levels between urban and rural areas. The industrial zone exhibited

Tributyltin bioaccumulation and toxic effects in freshwater gastropods Pomacea canaliculata after a chronic exposure: field and laboratory studies.

Freshwater samples and gastropod mollusks (Pomacea canaliculata) were collected at 5 sampling stations located along the lower Río de la Plata basin, Argentina, to assess the extent of tributyltin (TBT) contamination. Determined data revealed the presence of TBT and some of its breakdown products (dibutyltin: DBT, and monobutyltin: MBT) in all freshwater samples and also in soft tissues of P. canaliculata gastropods. Chronic bioassays (6 months) were performed using female gastropods that had been reared under laboratory conditions and exposed to a similar TBT concentration than the value dete

Urine-to-Blood Partitioning of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Human Biomonitoring: Implications for Environmental Exposure Analysis and Bioaccumulation Assessment.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals with substantial bioaccumulation potential, but their distribution between blood and urine in humans remains poorly characterized. In this review, we assessed the urine-to-blood concentration ratio (UtBCR) as a potential indicator of PFAS bioaccumulation by integrating evidence from human biomonitoring studies and protein-binding data. We summarized PFAS concentrations in human serum and urine across general and highly exposed populations and identified clear compound-specific differences in blood-urine partitioning. We furthe

Bioaccumulation and partitioning of PFAS in an AFFF-impacted freshwater system: Invasive Asian clams as indicators of surface water contamination.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) introduced into the environment from historical aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) releases are persistent sources of ground- and surface water contamination. This study evaluated invasive Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) as biomonitors in the Little Neshaminy Creek watershed (Pennsylvania, USA), adjacent to two former military installations with documented AFFF use, to assess their ability to integrate spatial and temporal variability in PFAS exposure. Surface water, sediment, and clam tissue were analyzed for 44 PFAS compounds using liquid chromatogra

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons bound to microplastics enhance their bioaccumulation and toxicity, inducing mitochondrial damage and apoptosis in lung epithelium.

As the co-exposure of microplastics (MPs) and hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment poses potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health, the combined toxicity of MPs and HOCs has caused growing concerns. In the present study, we evaluated the toxicity and bioaccumulation of polystyrene microbeads (micro-PS, Φ < 1 μm) bound various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to lung epithelial cells. Our results indicated that PAH-loaded MPs had significantly greater cytotoxicity than MPs alone, due to PAH's ability to induce epithelial cellular changes and cause mor

Mercury bioaccumulation and assimilation in marine plankton in meltwater influenced fjords and shelf waters along the east coast of Greenland.

The rapid melting of the Arctic cryosphere due to climate change will result in significant freshwater input into Arctic marine ecosystems. This might also cause the release of legacy mercury (Hg) stored in the cryosphere, increasing Hg concentration and its subsequent effects on the marine biota. However, there is scarce knowledge on the concentration of Hg in the lower trophic level organisms at the base of the Arctic pelagic food web. This is particularly important since these organisms modulate the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels, including fish and marine mammals. We quantified th

Habitat and dissolved organic carbon modulate variation in the biogeochemical drivers of mercury bioaccumulation in dragonfly larvae at the national scale.

We paired mercury (Hg) concentrations in dragonfly larvae with water chemistry in 29 U.S. national parks to highlight how ecological and biogeochemical context (habitat, dissolved organic carbon [DOC]) influence drivers of Hg bioaccumulation. Although prior studies have defined influences of biogeochemical variables on Hg production and bioaccumulation, it has been challenging to determine their influence across diverse habitats, regions, or biogeochemical conditions within a single study. We compared global (i.e., all sites), habitat-specific, and DOC-class models to illuminate how these cont

Utility of Diffusive Gradient in Thin-Film Passive Samplers for Predicting Mercury Methylation Potential and Bioaccumulation in Freshwater Wetlands.

Mercury is a risk in aquatic ecosystems when the metal is converted to methylmercury (MeHg) and subsequently bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs. This risk can be difficult to manage because of the complexity of biogeochemical processes for mercury and the need for accessible techniques to navigate this complexity. Here, we explored the use of diffusive gradient in thin-film (DGT) passive samplers as a tool to simultaneously quantify the methylation potential of inorganic Hg (IHg) and the bioaccumulation potential of MeHg in freshwater wetlands. Outdoor freshwater wetland mesocosms were amende

Cadmium and Selenate Exposure Affects the Honey Bee Microbiome and Metabolome, and Bee-Associated Bacteria Show Potential for Bioaccumulation.

Honey bees are important insect pollinators used heavily in agriculture and can be found in diverse environments. Bees may encounter toxicants such as cadmium and selenate by foraging on plants growing in contaminated areas, which can result in negative health effects. Honey bees are known to have a simple and consistent microbiome that conveys many benefits to the host, and toxicant exposure may impact this symbiotic microbial community. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to assay the effects that sublethal cadmium and selenate treatments had over 7 days and found that both treatments significa

Oligotrophy as a major driver of mercury bioaccumulation in medium-to high-trophic level consumers: A marine ecosystem-comparative study.

Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant of environmental concern. Numerous factors influencing its bioaccumulation in marine organisms have already been described at both individual and species levels (e.g., size or age, habitat, trophic level). However, few studies have compared the trophic characteristics of ecosystems to explain underlying mechanisms of differences in Hg bioaccumulation and biomagnification among food webs and systems. The present study aimed at investigating the potential primary role of the trophic status of systems on Hg bioaccumulation and biomagnification in temperate mar

Differential mobilization and metal uptake versus leaching in multimetal soil columns using EDTA and three metal bioaccumulators.

Tannery waste is a major environmental concern that needs proper management. Tannery solid waste (TSW) can be added to the soil as an organic amendment but needs metal removal. Chelant-assisted phytoremediation hastens the process of metal removal but also poses risk of leaching at the same time. This research evaluates Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-assisted phytoextraction and associated leaching hazard using metal-tolerant plants. Greenhouse trials were carried out with sunflower, spinach, and marigold using columns of uniform diameter packed with field soil and multimetal contamina

Bioaccumulation of the Selected Metal Ions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cells Under Treatment of the Culture with Pulsed Electric Field (PEF).

The obtained results demonstrated an influence of PEF on increase in accumulation of various ions in S. cerevisiae cells. Optimization of particular PEF parameters and ions concentrations in the medium caused twofold increase in accumulation of magnesium and zinc ions and 3.5-fold higher accumulation of calcium ions in the cells. In the case of ion couple, accumulation of magnesium and zinc was, respectively, 1.5-fold and twofold higher in comparison to the control cultures. Yeast cells biomass enriched with Mg(2+), Zn(2+), Ca(2+) as well as Mg(2+) and Zn(2+) (simultaneously) may be an alterna

Influence of soil mercury concentration and fraction on bioaccumulation process of inorganic mercury and methylmercury in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Recent studies showed that rice is the major pathway for methylmercury (MeHg) exposure to inhabitants in mercury (Hg) mining areas in China. There is, therefore, a concern regarding accumulation of Hg in rice grown in soils with high Hg concentrations. A soil pot experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of Hg-contaminated soil on the growth of rice and uptake and speciation of Hg in the rice. Our results imply that the growth of rice promotes residual fraction of Hg transforming to organic-bound fraction in soil and increased the potential risks of MeHg production. Bioaccumu
