There are many hypotheses regarding influences on the early hominin biogeographic spread into Eurasia; among them is increased meat-eating. Dmanisi in Georgia is one of the rare Early Pleistocene sites in Eurasia, and here we present primary information and analysis of the medium and large mammal taphonomy, contributing information about site formation and the hominins' interaction with the fauna. Nearly 85% of the specimens come from the B1 stratum. Relative abundances of mammal families demonstrate some bias toward carnivores, especially Canis borjgali, and diverse Felidae species. Bones dis

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a severe, usually fatal, acute systemic disease syndrome of certain domestic and wild ruminants caused by members of the family Gammaherpesvirinae. Two distinct but closely related viruses cause clinically indistinguishable syndromes: one that is indigenous to the widebeest and the other that apparently is indigenous to domestic sheep. Neither the pathogenesis nor the epidemiology of sheep-associated MCF (SA-MCF) is understood, primarily because of a lack of adequate detection methods for the etiologic agent or antibody against it. No acceptably documented is

OBJECTIVES: The studies related to quantitative ultrastructural features of mammalian pinealocytes, especially in comparative aspects, are relatively rare. Quantitative ultrastructural studies in many mammalian species are lacking. Because of the existence of differences in diurnal melatonin profiles in various species it seemed interesting to compare the ultrastructure of pinealocytes in various mammalian species, both laboratory and domestic animals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The pineal glands of the following mammalian species have been examined: mouse, rat, Syrian hamster, gerbil, sheep, horse

Tracking and preventing the spillover of disease from wildlife to livestock can be difficult when rare outbreaks occur across large landscapes. In these cases, broad scale ecological studies could help identify risk factors and patterns of risk to inform management and reduce incidence of disease. Between 2002 and 2014, 21 livestock herds in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) were affected by brucellosis, a bacterial disease caused by Brucella abortus, while no affected herds were detected between 1990 and 2001. Using a Bayesian analysis, we examined several ecological covariates that may be a

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) virus (EHDV) is a vector-borne virus transmitted by Culicoides midges that infects domestic and wild ruminants. EHDV causes high mortality in white-tailed deer (WTD) and oral lesions mimicking foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle. Small ruminants (e.g., domestic sheep, domestic goats) seroconvert but do not typically develop disease. In 2021, ~2100 WTD deaths were attributed to EHD in New York (NY) State. That same year, an EHD outbreak at a NY dairy resulted in a foreign animal disease (FAD) investigation to rule out FMD, and EHDV was detected in a captiv

Apathy is a prevalent non-motor symptom that significantly impacts the quality of life in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Although previous studies have investigated the neural correlates of apathy in PD, the longitudinal relationships between regional brain atrophy, white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), and apathy progression remain underexplored. Using longitudinal, multisite data of de novo PD patients from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), the present study aims to investigate these relationships. We used T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical dat

BACKGROUND: Thelaziosis is a neglected vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematode worms of the genus Thelazia which affects various hosts. Limited attention has been given to ungulate-associated Thelazia species. Current diagnosis of thelaziosis and the identification/differentiation of species heavily relies on morphological features. Therefore, we conducted an epidemiological study in Romanian cattle, with the aim to obtain morphological and molecular data that can be used for species identification.
METHODS: The eyes of 705 slaughtered cattle were sampled and subjected to morphologi

Cattle in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem occasionally contract bovine brucellosis from free-ranging elk and bison. Cattle producers use a variety of brucellosis prevention activities to reduce their herds' risk of contracting brucellosis, such as: (1) having state agency personnel haze elk off private land, (2) fencing haystacks, (3) administering adult booster vaccination, (4) spaying heifers, (5) altering the winter-feeding schedule of cattle, (6) hiring riders to prevent cattle-elk commingling, and (7) delaying grazing on high-risk allotments. Their brucellosis prevention decisions are c

INTRODUCTION: Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a global threat to cloven-hooved livestock and wildlife species. The causative agent, Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) can be transmitted via aerosols, droplets, and fomites including humans. This makes the need for biosecurity measures that interrupt FMDV transmission during an outbreak critical. However, quantitative data supporting the effectiveness of many recommended biosecurity measures is limited. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify peer-reviewed literature that described or evaluated biosecurity practices to mitigate FMD r

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is the causative agent of paratuberculosis (ParaTB) also known as Johne's disease (JD) in ruminants, which is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation. A similar counterpart has been observed in the form of Crohn's disease in humans. The present study is the first trail in goats to understand the peripheral cellular immune responses following experimental MAP infection and vaccination. Fifteen apparently healthy male kids (3-6 months old) of Barbari breed were included in this study. In the experimental study, 5 kids were infected w

This work aimed to determine the effect of cysteamine (25, 50, 100 and 200 μM) incorporated during dilution on frozen thawed buffalo semen quality. Semen was collected twice weekly for 7 consecutive weeks from three Egyptian buffalo bulls using an artificial vagina. Semen samples were pooled and extended with a Tris-based extender, cooled, equilibrated and finally frozen in liquid nitrogen. The diluted semen was evaluated for motility, viability, morphology, plasma membrane and DNA integrity, in addition to oxidative stress and in vitro fertilizing capability. The post thaw motility and veloci

Brucella is an intracellular parasitic bacterium with a wide host range. It can infect terrestrial mammals, including domestic animals such as cattle and sheep, as well as wild animals like elk and bison. It also infects marine mammals, and amphibians. These diverse hosts form the basis for the classification of Brucella into different species. It can invade multiple cell types, including human cells such as monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), and trophoblasts; primary animal cells such as murine and bovine macrophages, and canine trophoblasts; and established cell lines such as HeLa

BACKGROUND: A 26-year-old male had a history of frequent bowel movements, mushy stool with mucus and loss of 25 kg body weight in 6 months was diagnosed as a case of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The patient did not respond to routine and standard treatment for IBD. His condition was steadily deteriorating, and he was in a very precarious state when he reported to us.
METHODS: Upon laboratory investigation by using IS900 specific PCR [which is specific for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP)], the blood and stool samples were found negative. However, the presence of low

This is the first part of the revision of the Alycaeidae of China, Laos and Vietnam. Here we revise the species hitherto classified in Chamalycaeus Möllendorff, 1897 (genera Dicharax and Metalycaeus in this study). We show that no Chamalycaeus live in the region, and the alycaeid species of the investigated region can be classified into five genera: Alycaeus Baird, 1850, Dicharax Kobelt & Möllendorff, 1900, Dioryx Benson, 1859, Metalycaeus Pilsbry, 1900 and Pincerna Preston, 1907. We propose Dioryx dautzenbergi Páll-Gergely nom. nov. as a replacement name for Alycaeus (Dioryx) major Bavay & Da

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are very few tools available for subtyping Brucella isolates for epidemiological trace-back. Subtyping is difficult because of the genetic homogeneity within the genus. Sequencing of the genomes from three Brucella species has facilitated the search for DNA sequence variability. Recently, hypervariability among short tandem repeat sequences has been exploited for strain-typing of several bacterial pathogens.
RESULTS: An eight-base pair tandem repeat sequence was discovered in nine genomic loci of the B. abortus genome. Eight loci were hypervariable among the three

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) causes paratuberculosis in animals and is suspected of causing Crohn's Disease in humans. Characterization of strains led to classify paratuberculosis isolates in two main types, cattle type strains, found affecting all host species, and sheep type strains, reported affecting mainly sheep. In order to get a better understanding of the epidemiology of paratuberculosis a large set of Map isolates obtained from different species over the last 25 years have been characterized. Five-hundred and twenty isolates from different hosts (cattl

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) causes the chronic enteritis called paratuberculosis mainly in cattle, sheep and goats. Evidences that point out an association between Map and Crohn's Disease in humans are increasing. Strain differentiation among Map isolates has proved to be difficult and has limited the study of the molecular epidemiology of paratuberculosis. In order to asses the usefulness of the PCR based short sequence repeat (SSR) analysis of locus 1 and locus 8 in the epidemiological tracing of paratuberculosis strains we here compare for the first time th

Trueperella pyogenes is an important bacterial pathogen implicated in infections such as mastitis, metritis, pneumonia, and liver abscesses in both domestic and wild animals, as well as endocarditis and prosthetic joint infections in humans. Understanding the genomic and metabolic features that enable T. pyogenes to colonize different anatomical sites within a host and its inter-kingdom transmission and survival is important for the effective control of this pathogen. We employed whole-genome sequencing, phenotype microarrays, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing to identify genomic, metab

Human babesiosis in Europe has been attributed to infection with Babesia divergens and, to a lesser extent, with Babesia venatorum and Babesia microti, which are all transmitted to humans through a bite of Ixodes ricinus. These Babesia species circulate in the Netherlands, but autochthonous human babesiosis cases have not been reported so far. To gain more insight into the natural sources of these Babesia species, their presence in reservoir hosts and in I. ricinus was examined. Moreover, part of the ticks were tested for co-infections with other tick borne pathogens. In a cross-sectional stud
