Heat seekers: A tropical nocturnal lizard uses behavioral thermoregulation to exploit rare microclimates at night.

Environmental temperatures play a vital role in the physiological and behavioral activity of ectotherms. Behavioral thermoregulation allows animals to modify their body temperature to optimize functions critical to fitness, including digestion, growth, reproduction, and locomotor performance. Diurnal reptiles are a classic model system to answer questions related to thermal ecology, whereas behavioral thermoregulation in nocturnal species is thought to be strongly constrained by low environmental thermal heterogeneity at night. The few studies describing the thermal ecology of nocturnal reptil

Salivary secretion and grooming behaviour during heat exposure in freely moving rats.

1. At neutral (24 degrees C) and at hot (40 degrees C) ambient temperatures (Ta) salivary secretion from the submandibular gland of freely moving rats was recorded, together with simultaneous observation of saliva-spreading behaviour (grooming). 2. At a Ta of 24 degrees C, basal salivary flow was less than 2 microliters/min. When rats were first placed in the experimental chamber, brief grooming bouts often occurred. Transient secretion at more than 10 microliters/min was associated with this grooming, and the rate of salivary flow was positively correlated with the duration of grooming activi

Heat stroke in infancy.

We observed a 16-month-old infant with residual brain damage following a heat stroke from being left in a parked automobile. In contrast with adults, in whom heat stroke usually follows strenuous exercise, the condition in infants usually results from excessive environmental temperature and/or dehydration. Early recognition of the illness is imperative. Three cardinal freatures are hot, dry skin, central nervous system disturbance, and hyperpyrexia. Immediate treatment should be aimed at improving circulation with volume expanders and rapid cooling. Other supportive measures may be necessary t

Metabolic responses at sub-thermoneutral temperatures in captive common waxbills (Estrilda astrild).

Understanding how invasive species cope with novel thermal environments can help clarify the physiological mechanisms supporting establishment and range expansion. Here, we measured resting metabolic rate in captive-bred common waxbills (Estrilda astrild), a successful Afrotropical invader, across ambient temperatures ranging from 11 to 35 °C. We also assessed individual metabolic reaction norms, repeatability, core body temperature and thermal conductance to determine whether birds followed classical thermoregulatory expectations or showed evidence of reduced energetic costs at low temperatur

A Wearable System for Remote Wrist Skin Temperature Monitoring to Assess Skin Thermal Response to Extreme Cold: A Case Study.

Skin temperature measurement is a complex issue. Skin tissue is one of the main thermoregulatory organs and takes major responsibility for heat exchange in the organism. Accurate skin temperature measurement may contribute to better estimation of deep core temperature, which is why enhancing possibilities of skin temperature measurement is considered substantial. However, the real value of the skin temperature can be influenced by many biological and non-biological factors. Some of the external factors such as extensive wind or extreme ambient temperature may significantly influence the raw va

Dissimilar use of an external heat source for thermoregulation by shrews from different geographic regions.

Ambient temperature has a substantial influence on the thermoregulation costs of small mammals due to their high surface-to-volume ratio. Shrews are among the smallest of mammals and have adopted different behavioral and physiological strategies to deal with cold temperatures. In this study, we assessed the use of an external heat source in the thermoregulatory strategy of two Crocidurinae species, Crocidura russula and C. suaveolens, and one Soricinae species, Sorex araneus. Crocidura russula inhabits western Europe and is better adapted to a Mediterranean climate; C. suaveolens inhabits cent

[The activity of the motor units of the feline esophagus under cooling].

The background activity of the oesophagus motor units (MUs) was found to depend on respiration and to be facilitated in cooling. The MUs patterns of discharges involved a phasic activity and a tonic one. The firing rate of the MUs increased during expiration. A negative correlation was found between the phasic MUs firing rate and the skin temperature.

Human thermal sensitivity drifts at extreme temperatures.

Humans continuously adapt their behavior to ambient temperature, yet little is known about how they integrate distributed thermal sensations into a unified perception. This study investigates how people perceive changes in whole-body thermal environments, particularly under extreme conditions. In a between-subjects design conducted between November 2023 and April 2024, 51 participants compared the temperature felt in four independently controlled climate chambers. To generate meaningful perceptual contrasts, the temperatures varied dynamically within specific ranges: the mild condition involve

Short-term sleep deprivation and human thermoregulatory function during thermal challenges.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? It is generally accepted that sleep deprivation constitutes a predisposing factor to the development of thermal injury. This review summarizes the available human-based evidence on the impact of sleep loss on autonomic and behavioural thermoeffectors during acute exposure to low and high ambient temperatures. What advances does it highlight? Limited to moderate evidence suggests that sleep deprivation per se impairs thermoregulatory defence mechanisms during exposure to thermal extremes. Future research is required to establish whether inadequate

The effect of heat transfer mode on heart rate responses and hysteresis during heating and cooling in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus.

The effect of heating and cooling on heart rate in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus was studied in response to different heat transfer mechanisms and heat loads. Three heating treatments were investigated. C. porosus were: (1) exposed to a radiant heat source under dry conditions; (2) heated via radiant energy while half-submerged in flowing water at 23 degrees C and (3) heated via convective transfer by increasing water temperature from 23 degrees C to 35 degrees C. Cooling was achieved in all treatments by removing the heat source and with C. porosus half-submerged in flowing water

Impaired regulation of skin temperature in patients with diabetes mellitus evaluated by the cold exposure test.

This study aimed at evaluating vasomotor response of the hand in patients with diabetes mellitus. A skin temperature of the hand was measured before and after exposure to ice water, and the recovery rates of the skin temperature were determined at 3, 5, and 10 min after the cold exposure. Ninety-two diabetics ranging in age from 25 to 59 years and 43 normal subjects ranging from 23 to 69 years old participated in this study. Since the recovery rate was delayed in normal subjects over the age of 60, comparison was made between the diabetics and the normals under 60 years old. The skin temperatu

Febrile response to infection in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Temperature probes were inserted into the stomachs of juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) maintained outdoors at ambient fluctuating temperatures. Internal body temperatures (T(b)) were measured every 15 min for two days, and then the alligators were injected with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), pyrogen-free saline, or left untreated. Alligators injected intraperitoneally with LPS exhibited maximum T(b)s 2.6+/-1.1 degrees C and 3.5+/-1.2 degrees C higher than untreated control animals on days one and two after treatment, respectively. T(b)s for these animals fell to w

Morphine hyperthermia in the rat: an action on the central thermostats.

The mechanism underlying the hyperthermic response to low doses of morphine has been investigated in rats. Doses of morphine sulfate less than 10 mg/kg i.p. caused a rise in body temperature accompanied by vasoconstriction of the cutaneous blood vessels of the tail. This hyperthermia, unlike the hypothermia following higher doses of morphine was not blocked by naloxone nor did tolerance develop to the response. Injections directly into the hypothalamus suggested that, as with the fall in temperature after high doses of morphine, the hyperthermic effect is also due to an action on the preoptic/

The fan cooling vest use reduces thermal and perceptual strain during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day.

The fan cooling vest is coming into very common use by Japanese outdoor manual workers. We examined that to what extent using this vest reduces thermal strain and perception during outdoor exercise in the heat on a sunny summer day. Ten male baseball players in high school conducted two baseball training sessions for 2-h with (VEST) or without (CON) a commercially available fan cooling vest on a baseball uniform. These sessions commenced at 10 a.m. on separate days in early August. The fan airflow rate attached the vest was 62 L·s-1. Neither ambient temperature (Mean ± SD: VEST 31.9 ± 0.2°C; C

Metabolism and evaporative heat loss in the dik-dik antelope (Rhynchotragus kirki).

1. Under controlled conditions, the rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) respiratory frequency, evaporative water loss, heat balance, rectal (Trec) and surface temperatures were determined in the dik-dik antelopes at ambient temperatures (Ta) ranging from 1 to 44 degrees C. 2. The thermal neutral zone was found to be between 24 and 35 degrees C. 3. Respiratory frequency ranged between 27 and 630 breaths/min. 4. At a Ta of 44 degrees C, 95% of the heat produced by the dik-dik was lost via respiratory evaporation. Despite an increase in Trec, cutaneous evaporation did not increase. 5. During panting

Importance of thermoregulation in traumatic and haemorrhagic shock in the anaesthetized rabbit.

The effects of external thermal support was studied in 66 anaesthesized adult rabbits divided into six groups: control, traumatic shock and haemorrhagic shock; each of these groups had a subgroup with an external thermal support and a subgroup without support. During the four hour experimental period, anaesthesia alone resulted in a reduced core temperature and metabolic acidosis. The external thermal support attenuated these changes. In the shocked animals, the external thermal support reduced the mortality, assisted the body's thermoregulation and reduced the adverse metabolic effects of sho
