Surgical stabilization of a mandibular fracture in a pet African goose (Anser anser domesticus) with bilateral mandibular fractures.

A 7-month-old, 3.8 kg, female intact African goose (Anser anser domesticus), was presented on emergency after being struck by a metal chair during a strong gust of wind. Physical examination revealed ventral displacement of rostral portion of the mandible. A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan confirmed complete, comminuted, bilateral fractures on the rostral portion of the mandibular body. Surgical intervention involved applying external fixation using self-threading Thread Mate System (TMS) pins, orthodontic chains, and dental acrylics to stabilize the right mandible. Indirect reductio

Primary dynamic interlocking nail in femoral shaft fracture: A case series.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Femoral shaft fracture is one of the most frequent injuries encountered by an orthopedic surgeon. Surgical treatment is commonly needed. Intramedullary nailing remains the gold-standard in surgical treatment of femoral shaft fracture. One of the constant dilemmas in intramedullary nailing is whether to use a static or dynamic locking screw for treating femoral shaft fractures. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported three cases of simple femoral shaft fracture and surgically fixed with primary dynamic interlocking nail. Closed reduction with reamed nail was performed in 2

Comparison of Er:YAG laser and piezoelectric osteotomy: An animal study in sheep.

OBJECTIVES: It was the aim of this study to compare the feasibility of complete osteotomy of long bones in sheep using a newly designed variable square pulsed Er:YAG laser and piezoelectric surgery. In addition to uneventful bone healing after laser osteotomy, the goal was to assess the possibility to cut thick bony structures with both techniques in a surgically acceptable time frame of 2-3 minutes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A tibia midshaft osteotomy was performed in 24 sheep using either an Er:YAG laser (n = 12) or piezoelectric device (n = 12). Laser and piezoelectric groups were divided in t

Do Far Cortical Locking Screws in Locking Plates Lead to Earlier and Increased Medial Callus in Distal Femur Fractures Comparing to Standard Locking Screws?

BACKGROUND: Locking plates (LP) are commonly used to treat distal femur fracture. Far cortical locking (FCL) screws are designed to increase axial motion at the fracture site resulting in more callus formation in animal study. In our previous study, progress to healing was assessed. There were statistically significant differences in modified RUST score postoperatively with higher scores in the FCL group. However, the amount of callus formed was not quantitatively measured. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively assess the medial callus area (mm2) and changes in callus area over time i

Sonographic bridging callus: An early predictor of fracture union.

BACKGROUND: There is currently a lack of agreed criteria for sonographic assessment of callus and reliability between reviewers. The primary aim of this study was to determine criteria and reviewer agreement for sonographic bridging callus (SBC) on ultrasound. The secondary aim was to analyse the use of ultrasound to detect bridging callus in a prospective cohort of patients with a conservatively managed clavicle fracture. METHODS: A prospective cohort of conservatively managed displaced midshaft clavicle fractures underwent ultrasound scanning at three-, six- and 12-weeks post-injury. The ma

Fracture healing with alendronate treatment in the Brtl/+ mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable bone dysplasia characterized by increased skeletal fragility. Patients are often treated with bisphosphonates to attempt to reduce fracture risk. However, bisphosphonates reside in the skeleton for many years and long-term administration may impact bone material quality. Acutely, there is concern about risk of non-union of fractures that occur near the time of bisphosphonate administration. This study investigated the effect of alendronate, a potent aminobisphosphonate, on fracture healing. Using the Brtl/+ murine model of type IV OI, tibial fracture

Systemic inflammation induced by a thoracic trauma alters the cellular composition of the early fracture callus.

BACKGROUND: We recently demonstrated that a blunt chest trauma, a strong inducer of the posttraumatic systemic inflammatory response and one of the most critical injuries in polytrauma patients, significantly delayed fracture healing in rats, possibly by the interaction of the systemic inflammation with early regeneration processes locally at the fracture site. The underlying cellular mechanisms, however, have as yet remained unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the cellular and morphologic composition of the early fracture callus after a blunt chest trauma. METHODS: Rats

Poor histological healing of a femoral fracture following 12 months of oestrogen deficiency in rats.

SUMMARY: Fractures in post-menopausal osteoporosis cause significant morbidity; however, animal models for post-menopausal fracture healing lack the effect of ageing. Therefore, we developed a model using aged animals with chronic oestrogen deficiency, which demonstrates inferior fracture repair (decreased healing histologically, bone mineral density and content and strength). This novel model may help develop molecular strategies for osteoporotic fracture repair. INTRODUCTION: The femur is susceptible to damage by both systemic conditions such as osteoporosis and locally by traumatic injury.

Bolus or weekly zoledronic acid administration does not delay endochondral fracture repair but weekly dosing enhances delays in hard callus remodeling.

INTRODUCTION: It has been widely assumed that osteoclasts play a pivotal role during the entire process of fracture healing. Bisphosphonates (BPs) are anti-catabolic agents commonly used to treat metabolic bone diseases including osteoporosis, minimizing fracture incidence. Yet, fractures do occur in these patients and the potential for negative effects of BPs on healing has been suggested. We aimed to examine the effect of different dosing regimes of the potent BP zoledronic acid (ZA) on early endochondral fracture repair and later callus remodeling in a normal bone healing environment. Traumatic fibular shaft fractures in athletes.

A direct blow to the leg resulted in fibular shaft fractures in three elite college athletes participating in contact sports. None of the athletes had prior symptoms suggestive of a stress fracture. All three athletes had benign-appearing fractures and were treated nonoperatively. Ultimate healing was delayed, occurring on average at 23 weeks, and each case was complicated by refracture. Fractures of the fibular shaft in athletes may require more aggressive treatment than other simple fractures to allow sufficient healing to withstand the rigors of athletics.

[Rupture of the extensor pollicis longus secondary to distal radius fracture repaired with partial tendineous graft from the extensor carpi radialis longus with good functional result].

We report the case of a 36-year old female patient injured in a fall from a horse. Radiological assessment showed closed comminuted fracture of the lower extremity of the left radius with extensive displacement (A & B). Initial management was based on open osteosynthesis with screwed anterior plate and nails (C) followed by functional rehabilitation. Patient's evolution was marked by the occurrence of secondary fracture of the extensor longus, clinically objectified by thumb extension deficit and confirmed by dynamic Ultrasound (D). The patient underwent surgery with exploration of the frayed

Brachial plexus palsy caused by secondary fracture displacement in a patient with closed clavicle fracture.

In adults, brachial plexus injury due to clavicle fractures is rare, and is most commonly caused by nonunion, malunited fragments, hypertrophic callus, or pseudoaneurysm of the subclavicular artery or vein. Brachial plexus palsy in acute fractures caused by direct fragment compression is exceptional. Conservative treatment of nondisplaced and displaced midclavicle fractures in adults usually produces satisfactory outcomes. This article presents a case of a 74-year-old man who sustained a closed, midshaft right clavicle fracture complicated by secondary displacement and brachial plexus injury.

Innovative approach to distraction osteogenesis using a novel external fixator design. In vivo experimental rabbit model.

Distraction osteogenesis is an established surgical technique for bone lengthening. The procedure involves making osteotomies, in the bone and using a device to gradually separate, or "distract," the bone fragments. New Zealand white male rabbits underwent distraction osteogenesis on the right tibia and lengthening using external fixators at two different time points: a speed of 1.4 mm/day in 15 days and 2.1 mm/day in 10 days. Radiological analysis was used to determine the distraction osteogenesis rates during tibia lengthening in rabbits. The regenerated callus was carefully removed and subj

Titanium versus stainless steel alloy bridge plates for distal femur fractures: Does callus form earlier with titanium?

INTRODUCTION: Distal femur fractures account for 3-6% of all femur fractures. Internal fixation of most distal femur fractures with an anatomic lateral locking plate should permit some motion at the metaphyseal portion of the fracture when secondary bone healing is planned by the operating surgeon. While several studies have been performed evaluating union rates for distal femur fractures with stainless steel and titanium plates, the timing of callus formation between stainless steel and titanium implants used as bridge plates for distal femur fractures (AO/OTA 33-A and -C) has been investigat
