INTRODUCTION: Accurate prediction of peri-operative cardiac complications is critical to optimise pre-operative decision-making. Traditional risk prediction scores, such as the Revised Cardiac Risk Index, show only modest discrimination. Machine learning can model complex, non-linear relationships but their predictive performance compared with traditional scores remains unclear.
METHODS: We performed a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis. The primary outcome was postoperative adverse cardiac events following non-cardiac surgery. Prediction models were assessed relative to the

Freshwater ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity. Assessing water quality and identifying pollution factors affected by seasonal changes is of utmost importance. The traditional approach for identifying pollution sources and seasonal water quality assessment is often labor-intensive, time-consuming, and complex. In response, our study introduces a hybrid receptor, multivariate statistical and machine learning (ML) based framework as an alternative. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and receptor model were used to identify key pollutant s

The Marburg virus (MARV), responsible for severe hemorrhagic fevers with mortality rates as high as 90%, remains a significant public health threat. This study employs machine learning to identify inhibitors targeting the MARV Gene 4 Small ORF protein, crucial for the virus's replication and immune evasion. The Gene 4 Small ORF protein is pivotal in taking over the host's cellular mechanisms, facilitating unchecked viral replication and significant immune system disruption. Effective targeting of this protein holds promise for mitigating the viral lifecycle and entry, potentially curbing the s

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common after stroke. Still, routine screening of OSA with polysomnography (PSG) is often unfeasible in clinical practice, primarily because of how limited resources are and the physical condition of patients. In this study, we used several artificial intelligence techniques to predict moderate-to-severe OSA and identify its features in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
METHODS: A total of 146 patients with acute ischemic stroke underwent PSG screening for OSA. Their baseline demographic characteristics, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI),

PURPOSE: High glucose (HG), hypoxia (Hyp), and their combination are major risk factors for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Although these conditions induce features of the Warburg-like metabolic reprogramming in human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs), it remains unclear whether they produce distinct metabolic and angiogenic subtypes. This study aimed to characterize the Warburg-like-associated metabolic heterogeneity induced by these PDR-related risk factors and evaluate the ability of supervised machine-learning models to distinguish these subtypes.
METHODS: HRECs were cultured u

The development of a holistic theoretical framework that can predict the corrosion inhibition efficiency and evaluate the anti-corrosion potentials of novel materials has been a challenging one. This work aimed to address this challenge by integrating machine learning-based Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) models with computational simulation techniques. 25 descriptors derived from density functional theory (DFT) results for 130 triazole derivatives on mild and carbon steels in hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions were used to develop predictive models. Random Forest, K-Nearest

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulants are high-alert medications with substantial risk of serious bleeding, yet dosing and prescribing errors remain common. Although clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) can mitigate these errors, their impact is constrained by alert fatigue and limited interpretability.
OBJECTIVE: We developed and validated a hybrid CDSS that integrates rule-based logic with machine learning to improve the safe use of anticoagulants.
METHODS: This multicenter study used electronic health record data on anticoagulant prescriptions from 3 tertiary hospitals (1 for system development

BACKGROUND: Understanding cellular metabolism often involves an accurate estimation of metabolic fluxes-the rates at which metabolites are converted in biochemical pathways. Flux Variability Analysis (FVA) is the gold standard for computing reaction flux intervals. However, its reliance on linear programming makes it computationally intensive, often requiring hours or days for large cohorts on complex genome-scale metabolic network models.
METHODS: To address this limitation, we propose mFLIP, a machine learning-based framework for predicting flux intervals across metabolic pathways. The mode

OBJECTIVES: Predicting mortality is vital for tailoring treatments, improving care and reducing costs. Machine learning (ML) has shown strong potential, often outperforming traditional severity-of-illness scoring systems in intensive care units (ICUs). However, the black-box nature of ML limits adoption. This study evaluates the accuracy of several ML algorithms on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) dataset and applies explainable artificial intelligence to identify variables influencing ICU mortality.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 600 MIMIC-III patient recor

INTRODUCTION: With rapid population aging in China, depression among middle-aged and older adults has become a major public health concern. Chronic pain and sociodemographic factors are closely associated with depressive symptoms, yet their combined and heterogeneous effects are difficult to capture using traditional analytical approaches. Interpretable machine learning provides a framework to explore depression-related risk patterns within a biopsychosocial perspective.
METHODS: Data were obtained from seven waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011-2020), inc
