To meet its high energy demands, the brain mostly utilizes glucose. However, the brain has evolved to exploit additional fuels, such as ketones, especially during prolonged fasting. With aging and neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), the brain becomes inefficient at utilizing glucose due to changes in glia and neurons that involve glucose transport, glycolytic and Krebs cycle enzyme activities, and insulin signaling. Positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies have identified glucose metabolism abnormalities in aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other NDDs in vivo.

It is very challenging to develop protein drugs for the treatment of brain diseases; this is due to the difficulty in delivering them into the brain because of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Thus, alternative delivery methods need further exploration for brain delivery of proteins to diagnose and treat brain diseases. Previously, ADTC5 and HAV6 peptides have been shown to enhance the in vivo brain delivery of small- and medium-size molecules across the BBB. This study was carried out to evaluate the ability of ADTC5 and HAV6 peptides to enhance delivery of proteins of various sizes, such as 15

Analyzing the structure and function of the brain from a network perspective has increased considerably over the past two decades, with regional subnetwork analyses becoming prominent in the recent literature. However, despite the fact that the brain, as a complex system of interacting subsystems (i.e., subnetworks), cannot be fully understood by analyzing its constituent parts as independent elements, most studies extract subnetworks from the whole and treat them as independent networks. This approach entails neglecting their interactions with other brain regions and precludes identifying pot

The anatomical uniqueness of Einstein's brain is thought to be the seat of his intellectual prowess. Einstein's brain has been reported to contain: a higher neuron/glia ratio in the left inferior parietal lobule, greater neuron density in the frontal lobe, a larger expansion of the inferior parietal lobule, complex gyrification in many parts of the cerebral cortex, and a thick corpus callosum, especially the splenium. Individual differences in brain anatomy and current brain research were used to test the validity of these assertions. The investigation concluded that the so called anatomical u

Alois Alzheimer is best known for his description of neurofibrillary changes in brain neurons of a demented patient, identifying a novel disease, soon named after him by Kraepelin. However, the range of his studies was broad, including vascular brain diseases, published between 1894 and 1902. Alzheimer described the clinical picture of Arteriosclerotic atrophy of the brain, differentiating it from other similar disorders. He stated that autopsy allowed pathological distinction between arteriosclerosis and syphilis, thereby achieving some of his objectives of segregating disorders and separatin

A second course of whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) has been employed in selected patients with progressive brain metastases providing favorable symptomatic palliation with acceptable toxicity, although its efficacy and safety remain matter of debate. In the present study we have evaluated the outcomes in patients with progressive intracranial disease treated with WBRT reirradiation and concurrent temozolomide between October 2010 and May 2013. Data were obtained from a prospectively maintained database including patients with brain tumors treated with radiotherapy at Sant'Andrea Hospital.

Metal translocation to the brain is strictly controlled and often prevented by the blood-brain barrier. For the most part, only those metals required to maintain normal function are transported into the brain where they are under tight metabolic control. From the literature, there are reports that traumatic brain injury disrupts the blood-brain barrier. This could allow the influx of metals that would normally have been excluded from the brain. We also have preliminary data showing that metal pellets, surgically-implanted into the leg muscle of a rat to simulate a shrapnel wound, solubilize an

In recent years, neuroimaging studies of acupuncture have explored extensive aspects of brain responses to acupuncture in finding its underlying mechanisms. Most of these studies have been performed on healthy adults. Only a few studies have been performed on patients with diseases. Brain responses to acupuncture in patients with the same disease at different pathological stages have not been explored, although it may be more important and helpful in uncovering its underlying mechanisms. In the present study, we used fMRI to compare brain responses to acupuncture in patients with Bell's palsy

Vertebrates respond to light with more than just their eyes. In this article, we speculate on the intriguing possibility that a link remains between non-visual opsins and neurohormonal systems that control neuronal circuit formation and activity in mammals. Historically, the retina and pineal gland were considered the only significant light-sensing tissues in vertebrates. However over the last century, evidence has accumulated arguing that extra-ocular tissues in vertebrates influence behavior through non-image-forming photoreception. One such class of extra-ocular light detectors are the long

We describe the CT findings in the brain of a woman with pathologically proven elevated levels of blood and tissue cesium. The 42-year-old woman had been receiving cesium chloride as a non-mainstream treatment for metastatic breast carcinoma. She presented to hospital following a seizure, and died 48 hours after admission. A brain CT performed on hospital admission showed a diffuse increase in attenuation of brain parenchyma. Autopsy revealed elevated levels of cesium in blood and solid organs including the brain. We hypothesize that the imaging findings are attributable to the abnormally elev

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an adjustable, reversible, non-destructive neurosurgical intervention using implanted electrodes to deliver electrical pulses to areas in the brain. DBS is currently investigated in psychiatry for the treatment of refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette syndrome and depressive disorder. Although recent research in both animals and humans has indicated that DBS may be an effective intervention for patients with treatment-refractory addiction, it is not yet entirely clear which brain areas should be targeted. The objective of this review is to provide a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have had a profound impact on the delineation of the neurobiologic basis for autism. Advances in fMRI technology for investigating functional connectivity, resting state connectivity, and a default mode network have provided further detail about disturbances in brain organization and brain-behavior relationships in autism to be reviewed in this article.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent fMRI studies have provided evidence of enhanced activation and connectivity of posterior, or parietal-occipital, networks and enhanced reliance on visuosp

Aminopeptidase A (APA) generated brain angiotensin III, one of the main effector peptides of the brain renin angiotensin system, exerting a tonic stimulatory effect on the control of blood pressure in hypertensive rats. The distribution of APA in human brain has not been yet studied. We first biochemically characterized human brain APA (apparent molecular mass of 165 and 130 kDa) and we showed that the human enzyme exhibited similar enzymatic characteristics to recombinant mouse APA. Both enzymes had similar sensitivity to Ca(2+). Kinetic studies showed that the K(m) (190 mumol/L) of the human

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents the unrestricted movement of peptides and proteins between the brain and blood. However, some peptides and regulatory proteins can cross the BBB by saturable and non-saturable mechanisms. Leptin and insulin each cross the BBB by their own transporters. Impaired transport of leptin occurs in obesity and accounts for peripheral resistance; that is, the condition wherein an obese animal loses weight when given leptin directly into the brain but not when given leptin peripherally. Leptin transport is also inhibited in starvation and by hypertriglyceridemia. S

In the management of severe pediatric brain injury, attention has previously been paid to brain edema, ICP elevation and low cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). However, in the acute stage within 3-6 hours after trauma, brain hypoxia and hyperglycemia associated with diffuse brain injury are often observed. We have pointed out brain thermo-pooling (elevation of brain tissue temperature) and brain hypoxia caused by defective release of oxygen from hemoglobin (due to decrease in red blood cell enzyme (DPG)) as a new mechanism of brain injury. To treat these pathologic changes, we have developed a

Designing drugs (including peptides) with greater lipophilicity are still effective strategy for the enhancement of the permeability across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which is considered to be lipoidal membrane barrier of endothelial cells which have tight junctions without fenestrations. However, for the development of brain-specific drug delivery for neuroactive drugs, it may be greater promising strategy to utilize the specific influx transporters existing at the BBB for hexoses, amino acids, monocarboxylic acids, amines or to inhibit the functions of the efflux transporters such as P-g

We report a case of a postoperative brain infarction, in which an asymptomatic preoperative brain infarction was also revealed postoperatively. A 63-year-old man with bladder carcinoma was scheduled for the cystoplasty. The patient had no prominent preoperative abnormality. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in N2O/oxygen combined with a spinal block and a continuous epidural block. Anesthesia lasted uneventfully for 16.5 hours. However, emergence from anesthesia was delayed. On the first postoperative day, motor aphasia and right hemiparalysis was confirmed. The computed tomography (CT
