Epidemiological studies of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe.

During the period between January 1999 and December 2000, the distribution and seasonal patterns of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were determined through monthly coprological examination. Faecal samples of cattle were collected from 12 and nine dipping sites in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas, respectively. Patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of the intermediate host-snail populations and the climatic factors influencing the distribution were also determined at monthly intervals from Novem

Ecological studies on the intermediate host snails and the relevance to schistosomiasis control.

A detailed knowledge of distribution patterns of schistosome intermediate hosts and their population dynamics and factors affecting these patterns will provide useful information about the possibilities and desirability of conducting snail control measures in various transmission situations. On the basis of various case studies the association between the occurrence of human water contacts and the presence of schistosome intermediate hosts or infections in the intermediate hosts is illustrated. Other parameters affecting snail distribution patterns and density fluctuations are discussed. It is

Snail immunity to schistosomes: insights from omics studies.

Schistosomiasis is a serious public health concern, with transmission facilitated by a small number of freshwater snail intermediate host species. Infection outcomes vary greatly across the primary vector genera, Biomphalaria (for Schistosoma mansoni), Bulinus (for S. haematobium), and Oncomelania (for S. japonicum), even within species, ranging from full resistance to high compatibility. Omics methods have altered this field by correlating host genotype, baseline immunological status, and time-resolved responses to whether invading miracidia are eliminated or develop sporocysts. Evidence from

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SITUATION OF URINARY SCHISTOSOMIASIS IN TAMWAH AREA, GIZA, EGYPT: ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL.

Preliminary studies were carried out on schistosomiasis in Giza Governorate for the last three years. These studies revealed that Tamwah village was one of areas afflicted by the highest number of Schistosoma haematobium infection cases. 'The study assessed the epidemiological situation of S. haematobium by parasitological and snail surveys. During April 2016, urine samples of 1285 children collected from three primary schools were centrifuged for microscopic examination. Also a snail survey was done along the shore (700m length). The snail were classified and examined for cercariae by light e

[Focusing of Schistosoma haematobium transmission in irrigated perimeters of the Niger valley (Niger): importance of malacological factors].

BACKGROUND: Currently, the control of urinary schistosomiasis is mostly based on mass treatment. Characterization of Schistosoma haematobium transmission could lead to adding new methods to the control strategy. METHODS: We carried out malacological and cercariometrical surveys in irrigated perimeters of the Niger River valley. A semi-monthly follow-up was performed in three main sites of human-water contact in a village located at the border of the irrigated perimeter. Bulinids were collected during 20 min; after identification based on the shell morphology, their parasites were characterize

Urinary schistosomiasis in schoolchildren on Zanzibar Island (Unguja), Tanzania: a parasitological survey supplemented with questionnaires.

The distribution of urinary schistosomiasis in schoolchildren on Zanzibar Island (Unguja) was surveyed in May 2001 to test a potential correlation with the distribution of snail species of the Bulinus africanus group and to record contemporary baseline epidemiological data. Quasi-random samples of 40 schoolchildren of mixed sexes were selected from each of 10 schools. Schistosoma haematobium infections were detected upon the basis of micro-haematuria with subsequent confirmation by microscopy examination for schistosome eggs. At the time of urine collection, each child was interviewed with a s

Bilharziasis survey in south-western Asia; covering Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Sa'udi Arabia, and Syria: 1950-51.

This paper describes a limited survey of bilharziasis and its vectors carried out during 1950 and 1951 in some countries of south-western Asia. Lack of time and of full facilities prevented the survey from being as comprehensive and systematic as would have been wished, but enough data were obtained to provide a general estimate of the situation.Information already available from the literature was supplemented by collecting unpublished records, questioning the inhabitants, examining random samples of stools and urine, and investigating rivers, wells, and springs. Bilharziasis haematobia is al

Prospects for the elimination of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis: exploring disease trends through time at the Barombi crater lakes, South-West Cameroon.

In Cameroon, there is a national programme engaged in the control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. In certain locations, the programme is transitioning from morbidity control towards local interruption of parasite transmission. The volcanic crater lake villages of Barombi Mbo and Barombi Kotto are well-known transmission foci and are excellent context-specific locations to assess appropriate disease control interventions. Most recently they have served as exemplars of expanded access to deworming medications and increased environmental surveillance. In this paper, we revi

Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene meeting at Manson House, London, 18 May 1995. The epidemiology of human schistosomiasis in the Senegal river basin.

Extensive water development has taken place in the north of Senegal over the last decade, resulting in a large increase in the amount of fresh water for irrigation. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium in the Senegal river basin (SRB), and to ascertain the distribution of the snail species acting as intermediate hosts for both species of schistosomes. The schistosomiasis survey started in January 1994 and was completed in March 1995. Compared to studies before the construction of the Diama dam, there was a

Human Schistosoma exposure risk in rice fields and an exploration of fish species for snail and schistosomiasis biocontrol.

Schistosomiasis is a devastating parasitic disease in which the infectious stage to humans is released by intermediate host snails. The Senegal River Basin (SRB) is a high-risk area for both urogenital and fecal human schistosomiasis and has extensive rice cultivation. However, occupational risk of schistosomiasis to people working in irrigated rice fields is not well established. We performed intermediate host snail surveys from 2022-2023 in rice fields and irrigation canals throughout the SRB. We discovered human schistosome-shedding snails in rice fields and adjacent irrigation canals durin

A new focus of Schistosoma haematobium/S. intercalatum hybrid in Cameroon.

Terminal-spined schistosome eggs were found in both stool and urine specimens of a high proportion of infected individuals in Kinding Njabi, a village located in a savannah/forest ecotone of Center Province, Cameroon. Infections with terminal-spined schistosomes are not common in that region and first appeared in Kinding Njabi in the mid-1980s. The village population, determined by house-to-house census in 1986, was 345. Of 302 stool samples examined by a thick smear technique, 58 (19%) were positive, and of 320 urine samples examined by sedimentation, 40 (12%) were positive. Twenty-six (37%)

Urban schistosomiasis in Lusaka, Zambia: a preliminary study.

A preliminary survey was conducted in Lusaka, Zambia to determine the extent of schistosomiasis transmission in the city. Stool and urine samples were collected from 240 children from seven schools selected to give a cross-sectional representation of the various socio-economic neighbourhoods of the city. In addition to the parasitological examination, students were questioned with respect to their knowledge of the disease and other epidemiological factors. In addition, water bodies near the schools were examined for the presence of snail hosts. Results of the survey suggest that schistosomiasi

The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in Lango region Uganda 60 years after Schwetz 1951: Can schistosomiasis be eliminated through mass drug administration without other supportive control measures?

INTRODUCTION: Lango region is the only known endemic region for urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in Uganda. Although there has been no significant improvement in sanitation and safe water supply in the region over years, the endemicity and prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium, in particular, have declined, perhaps due to yearly mass treatment campaigns implemented since 2003. METHODS: We report the epidemiology of Urinary and Intestinal schistosomiasis in Lango since 1951-2011 determined through Microscopic examinations for S. mansoni and S. haematobium respectively. A retrospective da

A new focus of Schistosoma mansoni in Yoro village, Mbam and Inoubou Division, Cameroon.

Investigations on intestinal schistosomiasis were carried out in Yoro, a small village located in the transitional zone between forest and savannah, in the Mbam and Inoubou Division of Cameroon. Four human-water contact points were identified in the village and sampled for snails, and the inhabitants underwent parasitologic and clinical surveys to search for signs and symptoms of intestinal schistosomiasis. The results indicated the presence of two freshwater snails, both potential intermediate hosts of Schistosoma sp: Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus forskalii. However, only the former spec

The effects of quarry mining on the epidemiology of Schistosoma haematobium in schoolchildren, in Ishiagu, south-eastern Nigeria.

Over the last two decades there has been a noticeable increase in the activities of quarry-mining companies in the Ishiagu area of south-eastern Nigeria. These activities have produced an ever-growing number of abandoned quarry pits that usually quickly fill with water and appear to become suitable habitats for the freshwater snails that may act as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium. To examine the potential role of quarry mining on the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis caused by S. haematobium, urine samples were collected from 1819 schoolchildren in northern Ishiagu (an area w
