Five overarching factors central to grammatical learning and treatment in children with developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: During grammatical treatment of children with developmental language disorder (DLD), it is natural for therapists to focus on the grammatical details of the target language that give the children special difficulty. However, along with the language-specific features of the target (e.g., for English, add -s to verbs in present tense, third-person singular contexts), there are overarching factors that operate to render the children's learning task more, or less, challenging, depending on the particular target. AIMS: To identify five such factors that can play a role in the grammatic

Bimodal Bilingual (Macau Sign Language and Spoken Cantonese) Programming With Four Deaf Preschoolers With Underlying Neurological Conditions: The Macau Project.

Bimodal bilingual (spoken and sign language) programming has been recommended to promote the language and social development of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students as advances in auditory technologies and inclusion placements have opened up opportunities for access to spoken language (Mitchiner et al., 2012). The authors report preliminary findings of a small-scale, service-oriented bimodal bilingual (Macau Sign Language and spoken Cantonese) project at a deaf service center with four preschool deaf children who had underlying neurological conditions. Using a qualitative multiple case stud

Vocal Turn-Taking in Families With Children With and Without Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal turn-taking is an important predictor of language development in children with and without hearing loss. Most studies have examined vocal turn-taking in mother-child dyads without considering the multitalker context in a child's life. The present study investigates the quantity of vocal turns between deaf and hard-of-hearing children and multiple members of their social environment. DESIGN: Participants were 52 families with children who used hearing aids (HA, mean age 26.3 mo) or cochlear implants (CI, mean age 63.2 mo) and 27 families with normal-hearing (NH, mean age 26.6

Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts' (SALT) transcribing method and Narrative Assessment Protocol (NAP) online coding method: are they interchangeable?

Purpose: A narrative is a reliable tool for assessing the child's oral language. There are various narrative assessment tools. Most of them follow the Language Sample Analysis method such as Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) which is time-consuming and needs extensive training. The Narrative Assessment Protocol (NAP) offers a free and faster method of assessment to administer. The current study compared the NAP online and offline coding methods. Methods: Fifty-two kindergarteners (40-66 months old) were voice-recorded while generating a story. A transcriber coded the samples us

Can the Care Need Index Identify Healthcare Centres With Higher Proportions of Children at Risk?

AIMS: To examine the association between the widely used social deprivation index, the Child Adjusted Care Need Index, and healthcare centres with a higher proportion of children with specific health risk factors monitored within the Swedish Child Health Services. METHODS: Data on health outcomes and index scores were obtained from the Swedish Child Health Services Register and grouped by healthcare centre. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between index scores and various health outcomes. RESULTS: The index partly explained the variation in the pr

The effectiveness of early head start for 3-year-old children and their parents: lessons for policy and programs.

Early Head Start, a federal program begun in 1995 for low-income pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers, was evaluated through a randomized trial of 3,001 families in 17 programs. Interviews with primary caregivers, child assessments, and observations of parent-child interactions were completed when children were 3 years old. Caregivers were diverse in race-ethnicity, language, and other characteristics. Regression-adjusted impact analyses showed that 3-year-old program children performed better than did control children in cognitive and language development, displayed higher em

Childhood autism: deficits of communication and symbolic development. I. Distinctions from language disorders.

The present paper reviews, outlines, and explores the literature concerned with the speech-language disorder of childhood autism. The problems of communication of the autistic child are compared and contrasted with those of children with a variety of other language disorders (e.g. receptive developmental dysphasia). Based upon the review of normal preverbal communicatory and symbolic development, it is concluded that childhood autism involves a pervasive language disorder encompassing communication in general, as well as certain symbolic-representational abilities necessary for language. An ov

Longitudinal relations between phonological and grammatical development of young children with developmental language disorder.

Most children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) have persistent grammatical difficulties, and a considerable subgroup of these children also experience difficulties in their speech production development. Research suggests that speech and language development are related, but what this relation looks like is unclear. We examined whether phonological and grammatical complexity and accuracy scores of 3- to 6-year-old children with DLD are related over time. We included 37 children with DLD (mean age T1 = 4;2 (SD = 1;0), range: 2;9-6;0) who received intervention in a clinical setting.

Marking of Tense and Agreement in Language Samples by Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment in African American English and Southern White English: Evaluation of Scoring Approaches and Cut Scores Across Structures.

Purpose As follow-up to a previous study of probes, we evaluated the marking of tense and agreement (T/A) in language samples by children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typically developing controls in African American English (AAE) and Southern White English (SWE) while also examining the clinical utility of different scoring approaches and cut scores across structures. Method The samples came from 70 AAE- and 36 SWE-speaking kindergartners, evenly divided between the SLI and typically developing groups. The structures were past tense, verbal -s, auxiliary BE present, and auxilia

Phonological memory problems are magnified in children from language minority homes when predicting reading disability.

Children from language minority (LM) environments speak a language at home that differs from that at school, are often from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, and are at risk for reading impairment. We evaluated the main effects and interaction of language status and phonological memory and awareness on reading disorder in 352 children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. A significant phonological memory by language status interaction indicated that phonological memory problems were magnified in predicting reading impairment in children from LM versus English dominant (

The effectiveness of telepractice for speech-language pathology intervention with children younger than 12 years: A meta-analysis.

BackgroundSince Coronavirus disease 2019, telepractice delivery has become increasingly integrated in the standard practice of speech-language pathologists and audiologists. It is therefore important to synthesize existing knowledge on this intervention modality. However, limited evidence exists regarding its use in children. This meta-analysis evaluated evidence on the effectiveness of telepractice compared to in-person intervention for children aged ≤ 12 years.MethodA systematic search was conducted for systematic reviews, meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials comparing telepractice

Randomised Controlled Trial Evaluating Active versus Passive Waiting for Speech-Language Pathology.

INTRODUCTION: High demand for speech-language pathology means children sometimes wait over 12 months for services, missing out on timely support. Waiting can be a time of stress, concern, and powerlessness for caregivers. Provision of information via a website may support families and encourage active waiting. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare children's speech, intelligibility, language, and literacy outcomes, and caregivers' satisfaction and empowerment in active versus passive waiting conditions. METHODS: Ninety-seven preschool-aged children referred to a community health sp

Global developmental delay in a 10-month-old infant boy.

A 10-month-old boy was seen for the first time for a health supervision visit by a pediatrician. A brief review of the child's medical history did not reveal any specific problems. On physical examination, the pediatrician found an alert, smiling child, but she was surprised by the following observations: unable to sit without support, absent pincer grasp, no audible language, unilateral exotropia, and microcephaly. Expansion of the medical history revealed an uneventful full-term prenatal course and normal vaginal delivery. The mother denied use of alcohol or other drugs/medications during th

Intervention for bilingual speech sound disorders: A case study of an isiXhosa-English-speaking child.

Bilingualism is common in South Africa, with many children acquiring isiXhosa as a home language and learning English from a young age in nursery or crèche. IsiXhosa is a local language, part of the Bantu language family, widely spoken in the country. Aims: To describe changes in a bilingual child's speech following intervention based on a theoretically motivated and tailored intervention plan. Methods and procedures: This study describes a female isiXhosa-English bilingual child, named Gcobisa (pseudonym) (chronological age 4 years and 2 months) with a speech sound disorder. Gcobisa's speech

Pattern of neuropsychological deficit at age five years following neonatal unilateral brain injury.

The pattern of language deficit following left-hemisphere brain injury and visual/spatial deficit following right-hemisphere injury in an adult or older child is well recognized, but has been inconsistently reported following presumed neonatal brain injury. Our prospective study of 24 children at age 5 with documented neonatal unilateral brain injury lends support to the theory of hemisphere specialization at the time of birth. Twelve children who had unilateral left-hemisphere lesion were compared to 12 children with unilateral right-hemisphere lesion of similar timing and severity. Relative

"Disconnected From Everyone and Everything Around Them": A Mixed Method Study to Explore the Perspectives of Children With Language Difficulties and Their Caregivers On Mental Health Concerns and Mental Health Support.

BACKGROUND: Globally, as many as 1 in 8 children experience severe and persistent language difficulties. These children are at heightened risk for mental health difficulties, however, both the ways in which mental health concerns manifest in the context of language difficulties, and the experiences of children with language difficulties and their caregivers in accessing and engaging with formal mental health supports remain under researched. AIM: The aim of the current study was to explore lived experience perspectives (child and caregiver) on mental health concerns and, mental health support
