First Occurrence of the OXA-198 Carbapenemase in Enterobacterales.

A carbapenem-resistant Citrobacter sp. was recovered from routine screening of multidrug-resistant bacteria. This isolate coproduced OXA-48 and OXA-198. OXA-48 was carried by the prototypical IncL plasmid, whereas OXA-198 was carried by a peculiar IncHI-type plasmid. This carbapenemase gene was inserted within a class 1 integron located on a conjugative plasmid. This report describes the first occurrence of OXA-198 in Enterobacterales.

Earthworm gut bacteria facilitate cadmium immobilization through the formation of CdS nanoparticles.

Gut bacteria of earthworm Amynthas hupeiensis exhibit significant potential for the in-situ remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. However, the mechanisms by which these gut bacteria immobilize and tolerate Cd remain elusive. The composition of the gut bacterial community was characterized by high-throughput sequencing. Cd-tolerant bacteria were isolated from the gut, and their roles in Cd immobilization, as well as their tolerance mechanisms, were explored through chemical characterization and transcriptome analysis. The predominant taxa in the gut bacterial community included unclass

The rise and spread of mcr plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance.

Polymyxins are important lipopeptide antibiotics that serve as the last-line defense against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacterial infections. Worryingly, the clinical utility of polymyxins is currently facing a serious threat with the global dissemination of mcr, plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance. The first plasmid-mediated polymyxin resistance gene, termed as mcr-1 was identified in China in November 2015. Following its discovery, isolates carrying mcr, mainly mcr-1 and less commonly mcr-2 to -7, have been reported across Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and

Nitrate reduction and iron (II) oxidation by subsurface bacteria from the Iberian Pyritic Belt: Insights into the biogeochemical cycles in this environment.

Nitrogen and iron are central to Earth's biogeochemical cycles. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), a vast iron reservoir, hosts extremophilic microorganisms adapted to high metal and sulfur concentrations. This study investigates two isolates from the deep IPB subsurface, Citrobacter telavivensis T1.2D-1 and Stutzerimonas stutzeri T2.31D-1, evaluating their nitrate-reducing capacity and the role of iron in denitrification, with emphasis on nitrate-dependent ferrous iron oxidation (NDFO). Both species could reduce nitrate in sucrose-, lactate-, or acetate-fed medium, while their consortium enhanced

3-Hydroxypropionaldehyde, an inhibitory metabolite of glycerol fermentation to 1,3-propanediol by enterobacterial species.

Glycerol fermentation by Enterobacter agglomerans revealed that both growth and 1,3-propanediol production ceased after consumption of about 430 mM glycerol, irrespective of the initial glycerol content. This phenomenon was assigned to the production of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, which was identified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and which showed a bacteriostatic effect. The accumulation during glycerol fermentation was also observed with two other enterobacterial species, i.e., Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii.

Multidrug-Resistant Proteus mirabilis and Other Gram-Negative Species Isolated from Native Egyptian Chicken Carcasses.

Poultry carcasses may be reservoirs for the zoonotic transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to humans and pose a major public health hazard. During the isolation of Salmonella from poultry and other foods, many of the presumptive typical Salmonella colonies on xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) agar were found to lack the invA gene, which is the specific target gene for Salmonella spp. Therefore, the current study aimed to estimate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of extensively drug-resistant invA-negative non-Salmonella isolates recovered from native Egyptian chic

Nucleotide sequence of the ampC-ampR region from the chromosome of Yersinia enterocolitica.

The nucleotide sequence of a 3.1-kb region from the chromosome of the Yersinia enterocolitica O:5b strain IP97 containing the gene for an inducible chromosomal cephalosporinase has been determined. The cephalosporinase gene was homologous to other enterobacterial chromosomal cephalosporinase genes, and it was accompanied by a gene homologous to the regulatory ampR gene. The arrangement of genes in the Y. enterocolitica ampCR unit was identical to that in the Enterobacter cloacae and Citrobacter freundii ampCR units.

A Pilot Study on the Prevalence and Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria in Chicken and Pork Meat Around Kathmandu District, Nepal.

The increasing trend of multidrug resistance in Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) has been a major concern for the healthcare settings in Nepal and globally. In Nepal, previous studies on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have received limited attention to animal-sourced food, which represents a significant route for the zoonotic transmission of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This study aimed to assess antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance patterns of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from intestinal and gizzard samples of chicken and pork meat collected from five municipalities in Kathman

Genetic bioaugmentation with triclocarban-catabolic plasmid effectively removes triclocarban from wastewater.

Triclocarban, one of the emerging pollutants, has been accumulating, and it is frequently detected in wastewater. Due to its toxicity and persistence, the efficient removal of triclocarban from wastewater systems is challenging. Genetic bioaugmentation with transferable catabolic plasmids has been considered to be a long-lasting method to clean up pollutants in continuous flow wastewater treatment systems. In this study, bioaugmentation with Pseudomonas putida KT2440, harboring the transferrable triclocarban-catabolic plasmid pDCA-1-gfp-tccA2, rapidly converted 50 μM triclocarban in wastewater

Antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Staphylococcus species isolated from telephone receivers.

INTRODUCTION: Microorganisms are transferred to everyday objects from the environment and infected individuals. Pathogenic microbes are transmissible from the air, skin, hands and other interpersonal contacts and cause diseases most of the time. This study centres on the microbial assessment of telephone receivers, their ability to transfer bacterial infections and the isolation of these microorganisms from receivers, with an emphasis on Staphylococcus aureus and its antibiotic susceptibility pattern. METHODS: 1,591 isolates were obtained from roadside telephone booths in 16 different locatio

[Transference of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases from nosocomial strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae to other species of Enterobacteriaceae].

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important pathogenic bacterium, frequently isolated from nosocomial samples, that exhibits wide antimicrobial resistance profiles, including third generation cephalosporins (3GC), aminoglycosides and quinolones. The resistance to 3GC is mainly due to the synthesis of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL), encoded by conjugative plasmids. AIM: To investigate the potential transference of resistance to 3GC from nosocomial strains of K. pneumoniae to other clinical strains of various species of Enterobacteriaceae. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The mating exper

1H NMR spectroscopy in the diagnosis of Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced urinary tract infection.

The (1)H NMR spectroscopic method is suggested and its utility is demonstrated for the diagnosis of Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) in urinary tract infection (UTI). K. pneumoniae have the specific property of metabolizing glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD), acetate, ethanol and succinate. The quantity of 1,3-PD produced correlates well with the viable bacterial count. Other common bacteria causing UTI (except for Citrobacter frundii), such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Enterobacter aerogenes, Acinetobacter baumanii, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococ

Identification of Bacterial Species That Can Utilize Fructose-Asparagine.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is the only organism demonstrated to utilize fructose-asparagine (F-Asn) as a source of carbon and nitrogen. In this report, we first used a bioinformatics approach to identify other microorganisms that encode homologs of the Salmonella F-Asn utilization enzymes FraB (deglycase), FraD (kinase), and FraE (asparaginase). These candidate organisms were then tested with up to four different methods to confirm their ability to utilize F-Asn. The easiest and most broadly applicable method utilized a biological toxicity assay, which is based on the observation
