The future fate of Somali upwelling productivity and the implications for fisheries under climate change.

The Somali upwelling is the strongest upwelling region globally during its seasonal peak. The intense productivity that occurs during the southwest monsoon (May-September) sustains artisanal and industrial fisheries. However, due to its complex structure and seasonality, and the typically coarse spatial resolution of global climate models, understanding its future fate remains a challenge. Using a high-resolution future climate projection and a size-spectrum model (in the absence of reliable fish catch data), we identify key climate stressors and projected changes in higher trophic levels to u

Contrasting Climate Change Responses of the Rare Moss Genus Tetrastichium (Mitt.) Cardot Across Macaronesia: Implications for Persistence and Conservation.

Climate change poses a threat to bryophytes with restricted distributions and strong dependence on humid habitats. We assessed the climatic suitability of the moss genus Tetrastichium across the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. We compiled 90 records each for Tetrastichium fontanum and Tetrastichium virens and fitted Boosted Regression Tree models using WorldClim 2.1 bioclimatic predictors. Future suitability was projected for 2061-2080 and 2081-2100 using two global climate models under SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5. Model performance was good (AUC = 0.88, sTSS = 0.81, and sensitivity ≥ 0.94)

[Spatial regression analysis of relationship between schistosome infection rate of Oncomelania hupensis snails and climate factors].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the schistosome infection rate of O. hupensis snails and the climate factors in endemic areas of schistosomiasis, so as to provide the evidence for improving the snail control. METHODS: The snail and climate data of 18 counties in Hubei Province in 2009 were collected to obtain the infection rate of O. hupensis snails and to fit the spatial regression models. RESULTS: The multiple linear regression model showed that the residuals were autocorrelated (Moran's I = 0.182 8, P < 0.01) and the spatial regression was necessary. The spatial lag model (

Changing climate and its impacts on the dynamics of future malaria transmission over certain endemic regions in India.

As climate change plays a major role in evaluating the malaria disease over India, it is highly relevant to assess the spatio-temporal variability of malaria transmission dynamics over different climatic zones in India using modelling studies. In this study, VECTRI (vector-borne disease community model of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste) model is simulated to predict the future malaria transmission dynamics over four major climatological zones of India, forced with the different climatic parameters such as temperature and rainfall and non-climatic parameter such as po

Unraveling the invisible leptospirosis in mainland Southeast Asia and its fate under climate change.

Leptospirosis is a neglected waterborne zoonosis of growing concern in tropical and low-income regions. Endemic in Southeast Asia, its distribution and environmental factors such as climate controlling its dynamics remain poorly documented. In this paper, we investigate for the first time the current and future leptospirosis burden at a local scale in mainland Southeast Asia. We adjusted machine-learning models on incidence reports from the Thai surveillance system to identify environmental determinants of leptospirosis. The explanatory variables tested in our models included climate, topograp

Projected climate and land use change alter western blacklegged tick phenology, seasonal host-seeking suitability and human encounter risk in California.

Global environmental change is having profound effects on the ecology of infectious disease systems, which are widely anticipated to become more pronounced under future climate and land use change. Arthropod vectors of disease are particularly sensitive to changes in abiotic conditions such as temperature and moisture availability. Recent research has focused on shifting environmental suitability for, and geographic distribution of, vector species under projected climate change scenarios. However, shifts in seasonal activity patterns, or phenology, may also have dramatic consequences for human

Possible climates on terrestrial exoplanets.

What kind of environment may exist on terrestrial planets around other stars? In spite of the lack of direct observations, it may not be premature to speculate on exoplanetary climates, for instance, to optimize future telescopic observations or to assess the probability of habitable worlds. To begin with, climate primarily depends on (i) the atmospheric composition and the volatile inventory; (ii) the incident stellar flux; and (iii) the tidal evolution of the planetary spin, which can notably lock a planet with a permanent night side. The atmospheric composition and mass depends on complex p

Yellow fever virus outbreak in Brazil under current and future climate.

INTRODUCTION: Yellow fever (YF) is primarily transmitted by Haemagogus species of mosquitoes. Under climate change, mosquitoes and the pathogens that they carry are expected to develop faster, potentially impacting the case count and duration of YF outbreaks. The aim of this study was to determine how YF virus outbreaks in Brazil may change under future climate, using ensemble simulations from regional climate models under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios for three time periods: 2011-2040 (short-term), 2041-2070 (mid-term), and 2071-2100 (long-term). METHODS: A compartmental model was developed to

Climate change and Vibrio: Environmental determinants for predictive risk assessment.

Climate change significantly impacts the incidence and abundance of microorganisms, including those essential for environmental cycles and those pathogenic to humans and animals. Shifts in conditions favorable for microbial growth have expanded the geographic range of many pathogens, contributing to the emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases. Waterborne diseases pose severe risks in regions where adverse climate conditions intersect with population vulnerabilities, especially inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. Since many waterborne pathogens play crucial roles

Graph-Guided Regularized Regression of Pacific Ocean Climate Variables to Increase Predictive Skill of Southwestern U.S. Winter Precipitation.

Understanding the physical drivers of seasonal hydroclimatic variability and improving predictive skill remains a challenge with important socioeconomic and environmental implications for many regions around the world. Physics-based deterministic models show limited ability to predict precipitation as the lead time increases, due to imperfect representation of physical processes and incomplete knowledge of initial conditions. Similarly, statistical methods drawing upon established climate teleconnections have low prediction skill due to the complex nature of the climate system. Recently, promi

Climate change impact and adaptation assessment for road drainage systems.

Climate change exhibits a clear trend of escalating frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, posing heightened risks to drainage systems along the existing road networks. However, very few studies to date have investigated the consequences of projected future changes in rainfall on main road drainage and the resulting risk of road flooding. The work presented in this paper builds on the limited research by introducing a probabilistic model for assessing the impact of climate change on road drainage systems, incorporating climate uncertainty and drainage system variation. The probabil

Interpretable machine learning analysis of environmental characteristics on bacillary dysentery in Sichuan Province.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial dysentery (BD) is a leading cause of diarrhea-related mortality globally, with its incidence heavily influenced by environmental factors. However, a climate zone-specific predictive model for BD was currently lacking in Sichuan Province. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to employ interpretable machine learning to explore the influence of environmental factors on BD incidence across different climate zones and to elucidate their interaction mechanisms. METHODS: Monthly data on meteorological and ecological factors, along with BD case reports, were collected from 183 counties i

Climate Influence on Emerging Risk Areas for Rift Valley Fever Epidemics in Tanzania.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a climate-related arboviral infection of animals and humans. Climate is thought to represent a threat toward emerging risk areas for RVF epidemics globally. The objective of this study was to evaluate influence of climate on distribution of suitable breeding habitats for Culex pipiens complex, potential mosquito vector responsible for transmission and distribution of disease epidemics risk areas in Tanzania. We used ecological niche models to estimate potential distribution of disease risk areas based on vectors and disease co-occurrence data approach. Climatic varia

The response of streams in the Adirondack region of New York to projected changes in sulfur and nitrogen deposition under changing climate.

Modeling studies project that in the future surface waters in the northeast US will continue to recover from acidification over decades following reductions in atmospheric sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions. However, these studies generally assume stationary climatic conditions over the simulation period and ignore the linkages between soil and surface water recovery from acid deposition and changing climate, despite fundamental impacts to watershed processes and comparable time scales for both phenomena. In this study, the integrated biogeochemical model PnET-BGC was applied to two

The timing of autumn senescence is affected by the timing of spring phenology: implications for predictive models.

Autumn senescence regulates multiple aspects of ecosystem function, along with associated feedbacks to the climate system. Despite its importance, current understanding of the drivers of senescence is limited, leading to a large spread in predictions of how the timing of senescence, and thus the length of the growing season, will change under future climate conditions. The most commonly held paradigm is that temperature and photoperiod are the primary controls, which suggests a future extension of the autumnal growing season as global temperatures rise. Here, using two decades of ground- and s

How will mosquitoes adapt to climate warming?

The potential for adaptive evolution to enable species persistence under a changing climate is one of the most important questions for understanding impacts of future climate change. Climate adaptation may be particularly likely for short-lived ectotherms, including many pest, pathogen, and vector species. For these taxa, estimating climate adaptive potential is critical for accurate predictive modeling and public health preparedness. Here, we demonstrate how a simple theoretical framework used in conservation biology-evolutionary rescue models-can be used to investigate the potential for clim

Forecasting dengue fever in Brazil: An assessment of climate conditions.

Local climate conditions play a major role in the biology of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the main vector responsible for transmitting dengue, zika, chikungunya and yellow fever in urban centers. For this reason, a detailed assessment of periods in which changes in climate conditions affect the number of human cases may improve the timing of vector-control efforts. In this work, we develop new machine-learning algorithms to analyze climate time series and their connection to the occurrence of dengue epidemic years for seven Brazilian state capitals. Our method explores the impact of two key var
