Integrating evidence from lived experience of Aboriginal people and clinical practice guidelines to develop arthritis educational resources: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout (arthritis conditions) result in considerable pain and suffering and disproportionately affect First Nations Peoples, who are more likely than non-First Nations Peoples to have an arthritis condition and to experience a higher burden of disease. Access to culturally appropriate health information supports the health and wellbeing of First Nations Peoples. The aim of this study was to identify evidence-based, culturally appropriate recommendations to inform the development of arthritis educational resources for Aboriginal and

Elderly persons living alone: the effect of community context on living arrangements.

Current explanations of elderly household composition focus largely upon individual demographic, economic, and health characteristics and frequently ignore the effects of the community context within which elderly persons live. In this study, we incorporate the community context into an aggregate explanation of intermetropolitan variation in rates of living alone among elderly persons. We contend that three crucial community resources influence the rate of living alone: demographic and normative environment, economic affordability, and community social services. Data for Metropolitan Statistic

Location, Location, Location: How Community Distress Shapes Physical and Mental Health Outcomes for Caregiving Grandparents.

BackgroundThe health of caregiving grandparents is a critical area of research. Financial strain is a well-established predictor of health and a common issue for caregiving grandparents.ObjectiveWe sought to understand how community context influences this relationship between financial strain and health. Specifically, we examined two dimensions of community context: community distress and perceived access to key resources for caregiving.MethodsUsing a sample of caregiving grandparents (N = 439), we first conducted Latent Class Analysis to identify distinct profiles of resource access. We then

Building strength for the long haul toward liberation: What psychology can contribute to the resilience of communities targeted by state-sanctioned violence.

State-sanctioned violence (SSV) has resounding effects on entire populations, and marginalized communities have long persisted in the work toward liberation despite continued SSV. This paper aims to bridge the gap between the vast scholarship on resilience and the practical challenge of sustaining and thriving in communities targeted by SSV. We use the theoretical frame of the Transconceptual Model of Empowerment and Resilience (TMER) to articulate the process of resilience and the resources that support it: maintenance, efficacy, skills, knowledge, and community resources. As a practical fram

Caring for the community: the role of partnerships.

While many members of the public are deeply interested in and supportive of the three traditional missions of academic medicine--education, research, and clinical care, they also want to know what academic health centers (AHCs) are doing to improve the overall health of their communities. Much is already being done toward this goal, but improving communities' health in a measurable way requires a far broader agenda. AHCs must bring together the approaches of medicine and public health, and need to partner with many other players. This agenda must proceed despite all the other challenges that A

Using social marketing to increase community resilience.

This paper looks at how emergency planners can use social marketing to help build community resilience, thus reducing the need for external assistance in the event of an emergency. In turn, this benefits an external response by minimising pressures on already stretched finances, staffing and resources. Increased community self-reliance also means that in the event of a situation occurring, any community response can be launched immediately, without waiting for the external response to arrive, thus helping to minimise community losses in the longer term. This paper examines the benefits of comm

Community Coalitions Implementing and Sustaining Policy, Systems and Environment Strategies for Rural Health Equity.

Rural communities have assets that can be leveraged to address health disparities, particularly through complex policy, systems and environment (PSE) change approaches. Eleven rural community coalitions across Georgia participated in The Two Georgias Initiative, a 5-year health equity project from 2017 to 2022 designed to address rural-urban health disparities. The coalitions addressed community health concerns through implementing county-specific PSE and programmatic strategies tracked through a Community Change Tracking Tool. This mixed-methods analysis assessed the variation in strategies i

Facilitators and barriers to community-based HIV testing in Guinea: a CFIR-based implementation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In Guinea, where 36% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) are unaware of their serostatus, innovative screening strategies are crucial to achieving the joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS' 95-95-95 targets. Community-based HIV testing, as recommended by the World Health Organization, aims to reach at-risk populations by leveraging local resources and actors. Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), this study assessed facilitators and barriers to implementing community-based HIV screening across 10 pilot sites in Guinea, with the goal to optimizing i

An endemic of scabies in Kahuta, Azad Kashmir. The study shows a lack of awareness of scabies; mass treatment is needed.

INTRODUCTION: Rural areas worldwide face a general surgeon shortage, limiting rural populations' access to surgical care. While individual and practice-related factors have been well-studied in the US, we need a better understanding of the role of community characteristics in surgeons' location choices. This study aimed to understand the deeper meanings surgeons associated with community characteristics in order to inform efforts spanning the rural surgeon workforce pathway, from early educational exposures, and undergraduate and graduate medical education, to recruitment and retention. Associations Between Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Social Participation Among Older Americans.

This study investigated the associations between self-reported deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) and informal and formal social participation among Americans aged 65 or older and how their family resources, health, and community social capital may partially account for these associations. Using cross-sectional data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, multiple logistic regressions were conducted to test the research questions. Results revealed that older adults who were D/HH had significantly lower odds of attending recreational and clubs and organized activities. Family resources and

Avoided emissions and conservation of scrub mangroves: potential for a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico.

Mangroves are considered ideal ecosystems for Blue Carbon projects. However, because of their short stature, some mangroves ('scrub' mangroves, less than 2 m) do not fulfil the current definition of 'forests', which makes them ineligible for emission reduction programmes such as REDD+. Short stature mangroves can be the dominant form of mangroves in arid and nutrient-poor landscapes, and emissions from their deforestation and degradation could be substantial. Here, we describe a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico, to illustrate that projects that avoid emissions from defores
