Virtual reality is becoming increasingly popular, and modern haptic equipment, such as vibrotactile suits, haptic gloves, and force-feedback controllers, offers new means of interaction within virtual environments, significantly enhancing user experience. When interacting with virtual objects, combined visual and haptic feedback simulates the physical sensations of grasping, lifting, or moving real objects. This sensorimotor feedback is essential for inducing a sense of presence and agency, yet it remains challenging to reproduce in the absence of reliable haptic cues. In this study, we design

We propose event-based vibrotactile feedback as an effective approach for enhancing bare-hand XR interaction, delivered through commodity smartwatches that users already wear. While controllers and haptic gloves provide rich tactile feedback, they introduce additional hardware that users must carry and wear throughout the day. Importantly, they interpose hardware between the user and the virtual world, occupying the hands, constraining finger motion, and undermining truly unobstructed bare-hand interaction. Our proposed approach delivers short discrete pulses at key manipulation moments such a

Achieving a high level of immersion and adaptation in virtual reality (VR) requires precise measurement and representation of user state. While extrinsic physical characteristics such as locomotion and pose can be accurately tracked in real-time, reliably capturing mental states is more challenging. Quantitative psychology allows considering more intrinsic features like emotion, attention, or cognitive load. Time perception, in particular, is strongly tied to users' mental states, including stress, focus, and boredom. However, research on objectively measuring the pace at which we perceive the

Distractions in mixed reality (MR) environments can significantly influence user experience, affecting key factors such as presence, reaction time, cognitive load, and Break in Presence (BIP). Presence measures immersion, reaction time captures user responsiveness, cognitive load reflects mental effort, and BIP represents moments when attention shifts from the virtual to the real world, breaking immersion. While prior work has established that distractions impact these factors individually, the relationship between these constructs remains underexplored, particularly in MR environments where u

During cycling activities, cyclists often monitor a variety of information such as heart rate, distance, and navigation using a bike-mounted phone or cyclocomputer. In many cases, cyclists also ride on sidewalks or paths that contain pedestrians and other obstructions such as potholes, so monitoring information on a bike-mounted interface can slow the cyclist down or cause accidents and injury. In this article, we present HazARdSnap, an augmented reality-based information delivery approach that improves the ease of access to cycling information and at the same time preserves the user's awarene

A commonly used method of investigating colour vision, that is, the ability of the human visual system to discriminate colours, is based on the use of isochromatic colour plates, such as those used in the Ishihara test. The present paper describes a new computer-based method of determining red/green colour vision deficiencies. The method involves the presentation of Ishihara colour plates on a computer monitor. It has been verified experimentally that, despite the differences between the spectral emission of the computer screen and the daylight reflected by the Ishihara plates, the method is c

The cardiac physical examination is in itself a multimedia experience. It is an amalgamation of visible, palpable, and audible sensations, preceded by the collection of an appropriate historical context in which to place these multiple sensations. It is unlikely that any electronic media could ever replace the real life experience of admitting, examining, diagnosing, and effectively treating a patient with mitral stenosis who has decompensated because of the onset of atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, or a patient with sudden, severe aortic regurgitation due to endocarditis.

Finite element modeling was used to study the mechanical behavior of a cervical vertebra under axial compressive loading. A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) model of a mid-cervical vertebra using inhomogeneous material properties was generated from quantitative computed tomographic (CT) scan data. This model improved upon previous vertebral FE models by using a highly refined mesh to represent the 3-D variation in material properties of vertebral bone. Traumatic loading of the vertebra was simulated by applying an axial compressive displacement through linear spring elements. Bone s

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of co-operative and individualised Logo environments on creativity and interpersonal relationships regarding academic recognition and social acceptance. Participants were 83 students who studied in three eighth grade classrooms: one was exposed to a co-operative Logo environment (N = 30), the other to an individualised Logo environment (N = 24), and the third served as a non-treatment control group (N = 29). Results showed that students in the cooperative Logo environment outperformed their counterparts in the other two groups on certain mea

Conventional knowledge-based medical expert systems present information and elicit responses in the form of text. PHOENIX, a decision-support system designed to help non-radiologist physicians select diagnostic imaging procedures, offers a graphical user interface. The system constructs and displays algorithms, or flowcharts, from the rules in its knowledge base. Users can view the flowcharts and move through them by answering questions at branch points. The system provides detailed textual explanations of the rules and descriptions of the imaging procedures. The system is written in MUMPS, a

From a sequence of planar CT pictures of the hip joint the diagnostically relevant contours are extracted on a graphic monitor by means of an image-analysis process. To do this an image preprocessing is necessary to improve the quality of the CT pictures. These contour data permit a mathematical surface model of the hip joint to be derived using well-known methods of simulating an osteotomy. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the cartilage surface by MRI will be possible in the future. It will then be possible to plan computer-aided osteotomies with high accuracy.

Plagiocephaly is a common asymmetry of the skull giving the impression that the subject, usually a neonate, has suffered a compressive force acting unilaterally. Normally innocuous, it is a postural deformity that can be suggestive of other significant abnormalities, e.g. joint dysplasia. Although intuitive measurements of plagiocephaly appear in the literature there is little evidence of analytical evaluation. This paper describes a measurement methodology based on black and white photography. A flat-bed scanner and a personal computer facilitated the transformation of the prepared photograph

Virtual reality (VR) presents immersive opportunities across many applications, yet the inherent risk of developing cybersickness during interaction can severely reduce enjoyment and platform adoption. Cybersickness is marked by symptoms such as dizziness and nausea, which previous work primarily assessed via subjective post-immersion questionnaires and motion-restricted controlled setups. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic nature of cybersickness while users experience and freely interact in VR. We propose a novel method to continuously identify and quantitatively gauge cybersickness l

We introduce Visual Sedimentation, a novel design metaphor for visualizing data streams directly inspired by the physical process of sedimentation. Visualizing data streams (e. g., Tweets, RSS, Emails) is challenging as incoming data arrive at unpredictable rates and have to remain readable. For data streams, clearly expressing chronological order while avoiding clutter, and keeping aging data visible, are important. The metaphor is drawn from the real-world sedimentation processes: objects fall due to gravity, and aggregate into strata over time. Inspired by this metaphor, data is visually de

Diffusion-tensor MR imaging is a promising tool to evaluate white-matter integrity by quantitative and graphic maps including neural fiber tractogram. Current challenges afoot are to obtain higher quality diffusion-weighted MR images (high SNR, isotropic voxel, and high spatial resolution), to create a robust mathematical framework to process the data, to construct a user-friendly computer-based algorithm, to reveal determinants of diffusion process, and to establish analytical methodology.

Computed tomography provides a graphic picture of dural involvement due to metastatic neuroblastoma. These metastases occur along the external surface of the dura and cause further separation of the brain parenchyma from the bony calvarium. The dural metastases are continuous with subcutaneous deposits via the separated sutures. Sutural separation is nonuniform, and the sutural margins are indistinct due to bony involvement. The lytic bony metastases may produce localized calvarial thickening that may have a sunburst appearance.

Augmented reality (AR) refers to the introduction of virtual elements in the real world. That is, the person is seeing an image composed of a visualization of the real world, and a series of virtual elements that, at that same moment, are super-imposed on the real world. The most important aspect of AR is that the virtual elements supply to the person relevant and useful information that is not contained in the real world. AR has notable potential, and has already been used in diverse fields, such as medicine, the army, coaching, engineering, design, and robotics. Until now, AR has never been

Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe gastroenteritis and diarrheal mortality in children under five years of age, especially in developing countries. Mathematical modeling plays a crucial role in understanding the transmission dynamics of rotavirus and in evaluating the impact of vaccination strategies. In this study, a Caputo fractional-order susceptible-vaccinated-infected-recovered (SVIR) epidemic model is proposed to explore the transmission dynamics of rotavirus while capturing memory and hereditary effects associated with disease progression and immune response. The disease-free and en

We report a patient who presented with the clinical features of obturator mononeuropathy. Abdomino-pelvic computed tomography revealed a fusiform mass in the right perivesical space; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed characteristic "coaxial-cable-like" appearance in cross-section and "spaghetti-like" appearance in longitudinal section, pathognomonic of lipomatosis of the nerve. Nerve lipomatosis as the cause of obturator neuropathy has not been previously reported. MRI provides definite and graphic proof of the diagnosis.
