[A computer-controlled monitoring and therapy system for shock compensation in severe burns (author's transl)].

A computer-controlled control loop for the automatic diagnosis of shock and infusion therapy is reported. External information (off-line) and vital parameters measured with serial devices (on-line) are used by the computer for the automatic control of infusion pumps. By this method the critical shock phase could be prevented in five seriously burned patients. The construction of the system also permits its use in other shock conditions.

Computed tomography vs. digital radiography assessment for detection of osteolysis in asymptomatic patients with uncemented cups: a proposal for a new classification system based on computer tomography.

Digital radiographic images in the anterior-posterior and lateral view have been gold standard for evaluation of peri-acetabular osteolysis for patients with an uncemented hip replacement. We compared digital radiographic images and computer tomography in detection of peri-acetabular osteolysis and devised a classification system based on computer tomography. Digital radiographs were compared with computer tomography on 206 hips, with a mean follow up 10 years after surgery. The patients had no clinical signs of osteolysis and none were planned for revision surgery. On digital radiographs, 192

Management of sentinel lymph nodes in malignant skin tumors using dynamic lymphoscintigraphy and the single-photon-emission computed tomography/computed tomography combined system.

BACKGROUND: The differentiation of true sentinel lymph nodes from nonsentinel lymph nodes is difficult in cases of multiple radiolabeled or dyed lymph nodes. METHODS: We examined the locations of sentinel lymph nodes in melanoma and other malignant skin tumors by using dynamic lymphoscintigraphy and the single-photon-emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) combined system. RESULTS: Sentinel lymph nodes were detected in 45 of the 53 patients examined using only the ordinary blue dye method (85%), and were detected in all 35 patients examined using the SPECT/CT method (100%

Electroencephalography-Based Brain-Computer Interface System Using Tongue Movement Imagery for Wheelchair Control.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are essential in assistive technologies to restore mobility in individuals with motor impairments. Although electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-controlled wheelchairs have been extensively studied, most tongue-controlled systems rely on physical tongue movements, intraoral devices, or limited offline commands, which reduces the usability and comfort. This study introduces an EEG-based tongue motor imagery (MI) BCI for intuitive and entirely mental wheelchair control. By leveraging preserved motor function and the cortical representation of the tongue, the

Nanocellulose-based drug delivery systems: experimental findings and computational insights with emphasis on cellulose nanofibers.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are emerging as promising candidate materials for drug delivery systems due to their biocompatibility, large surface area, and structural versatility. Their capacity to encapsulate a variety of therapeutic compounds enables controlled and targeted release, although performance depends on formulation and surface characteristics. This structured narrative review article focuses on recent experimental and computational research on CNFs as drug carriers and their roles in small molecule loading, sustained release, and targeting strategies. In addition to CNF-based syste

Surrogate modeling based on computational fluid dynamics for predicting the capsizing moment in a coupled shiplift system.

Accurate prediction of the capsizing moment in shiplift systems remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the strong coupled interactions among the chamber, water body, and ship. Conventional three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations are associated with high computational costs, while commonly used two-dimensional (2D) simplified models neglect ship effects, potentially leading to underestimation of the actual capsizing moment. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-informed surrogate model is developed for one-step-ahead prediction of capsizing moment in a coupled cham

Engineering the MmeFz2-ωRNA system for efficient genome editing through an integrated computational-experimental framework.

Eukaryotic Fanzor proteins are compact, programmable RNA-guided nucleases with substantial potential for genome editing, although their efficiency in mammalian cells remains suboptimal. Here, we present a combinatorial engineering strategy to optimize a representative Fanzor system, MmeFz2-ωRNA. AlphaFold3-powered rational redesign produced a minimized ωRNA scaffold that is 30% smaller while maintaining up to 82.2% efficiency. Synergistic structure-guided and AI-augmented protein engineering generated two variants, enMmeFz2 and evoMmeFz2, which exhibited an average ~32-fold increase in activit

Clinical evaluation of a computer-assisted decision support and documentation system for the primary care of polytrauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Polytrauma management demands rapid, high-stakes decisions under severe time pressure, increasing the risk of error and deviation from evidence-based protocols. Computer-assisted decision support systems (CDSS) may counter these risks by improving adherence to guidelines and reducing cognitive strain. We developed TraumaFlow, a CDSS integrating the German S3 guideline and ATLS® principles, and evaluated its impact in real-world trauma care. METHODS: In a prospective study at a level 1 trauma center, 30 shock room cases were managed with TraumaFlow alongside the standard paper prot

SolenopsisDetector: development of an automatic detection system for fire ants using computer vision and deep learning.

Fire ants (Solenopsis spp. Westwood) pose a major ecological and economic threat, mainly due to the invasive potential of certain species. Current identification methods are highly dependent on taxonomic expertise, which can slow down decision-making. The development of an automated detection system could therefore support the identification process. We present SolenopsisDetector (SolenopD), an automated system for identifying Solenopsis ants using computer vision and deep learning. Following taxonomic practice, which emphasizes diagnostic body segments (head, thorax, abdomen), we evaluated 2

Portable Cone-Beam Computed Tomography System for Intraoperative Localization of Pulmonary Nodules: An Initial Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Advances in imaging have expanded options for diagnosis and therapy, including wedge resection of small pulmonary nodules. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can substitute for hybrid operating rooms (ORs) to identify impalpable nodules. We report the initial clinical use of a portable CBCT system (Cios Spin, Siemens, Germany) for intraoperative localization of small pulmonary nodules. METHODS: Four patients (3 men, 1 woman; mean age, 68.3 years) with peripheral nodules were included. Under general anaesthesia, an initial pre-scan confirmed that the lesion was within the field o

Next-generation vaccine adjuvants: Integrating nanotechnology, systems immunology, and computational approaches for precision vaccinology.

Vaccines based on purified antigens, recombinant proteins, and nucleic acid platforms increasingly depend on adjuvants to induce robust, durable, and appropriately polarized immune responses in humans. While classical adjuvants such as aluminum salts and oil-in-water emulsions have enabled the success of many licensed vaccines, their largely empirical design limits adaptability to emerging pathogens and population-specific needs. This review presents a translational framework for next-generation vaccine adjuvant development by integrating nanotechnology-based delivery systems, innate immune si

Impact of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Computer Aided Detection System (CADe) on Colonoscopies Performed in Hawai'i.

The demand for colonoscopies has increased over the last few years due to an aging population combined with a post COVID-19 backlog as well as an ongoing rise in younger patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Quality indicators ensure that high quality colonoscopies are being performed by endoscopists, thus decreasing the risk of post-colonoscopy CRC arising from lesions missed on the index exam. One common outcome measure is known as the adenoma detection rate (ADR), which is the likelihood that an endoscopist will detect a pre-cancerous polyp during colonoscopy. The Artificial Intelligence (

New insights into translational research in Alzheimer's disease guided by artificial intelligence, computational and systems biology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive and functional deterioration, with pathological features such as amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregates in the extracellular spaces of parenchymal neurons and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles formed by the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein. Despite a thorough investigation, current treatments targeting the reduction of Aβ production, promotion of its clearance, and inhibition of tau protein phosphorylation and aggregation have not met clinical expectations, posing a substantial obstacle in the development of drugs for AD. Recently, artificial
