Flexural behaviour of RC shear wall using enhanced finite element model.

Accurate nonlinear finite element modelling (FEM) of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls is essential for evaluating their seismic performance and ensuring structural safety. However, most existing modelling approaches often involve high computational costs or simplified representations of nonlinear behaviour such as cracking, tension stiffening, and confinement effects. This study presents a practical and verified FEM approach for RC shear walls that fail in flexure, achieving a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency. The proposed modelling strategy employs nonlinear material

Enhancing reading abilities of learners with intellectual impairments through computer technology.

BACKGROUND: Developments in the teaching of children with disabilities support pedagogy that emphasises learners' strengths as opposed to their assumed deficiencies. Educators and mediators who advocate this view continually strive for tools and methodologies that enhance learner participation in academic environments. Computer technology is one of the tools recognised for its potential to enrich learning experiences of learners with an intellectual impairment. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the influence of text-to-speech stories on the reading ability of intellectually challenged learners.

Improved computational fronto-central sleep depth parameters show differences between apnea patients and control subjects.

All-night EEG recordings from 12 male apnea patients and 12 age-matched healthy control subjects were studied in the present work. The spectral mean frequency was used to provide computational sleep depth curves from two frontopolar and two central EEG channels. Our previously presented computational parameters quantifying the properties of the sleep depth curves were improved. The resulting light sleep percentage (LS%) values were higher in apnea patients than in control subjects in the right central brain position (P = 0.028), in concordance to our previous work. Moreover, apnea patients sho

Accelerating phase diagram construction through activity coefficient prediction.

Obtaining phase diagrams from molecular simulations remains computationally demanding due to the need for extensive sampling of coexistence conditions and large system sizes. This study demonstrates a novel methodology for efficiently predicting phase behavior in Lennard-Jones mixtures by leveraging machine learning. Here, we train a Gaussian process (GP) model on Kirkwood-Buff Integrals (KBIs) to establish a predictive link between KBIs and activity coefficients-a key thermodynamic quantity encoding deviations from ideality. Through the incorporation of KBI trends, the GP model leads to the p

Chrysin Cocrystals: Prediction, Preparation, Characterization, and In Vitro/In Vivo Evaluation.

In this study, crystal engineering was employed to enhance the solubility and druggability of Chrysin (CHR). Four nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, including piperazine (PIP), 4,4'-bipyridine (BIP), imidazole (IMI), and sophoridine (SOP), were investigated using computational screening methodologies. Screening experiments were conducted to validate the computational screening results, and four CHR crystals were successfully prepared, three of which were reported for the first time. The structures of these cocrystals were characterized by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), powder X-r

Computed Tomography-Derived Fractional Flow Reserve: Developing A Gold Standard for Coronary Artery Disease Diagnostics.

In recent years, a new technique called computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) has been developed. CT-FFR overcomes many limitations in the current gold-standard fractional flow reserve (FFR) techniques while maintaining a better concordance with FFR. This technique integrates static coronary CT angiography data with hydrodynamic models, employing algorithms rather than guidewire interventions to compute the FFR. In addition to diagnosing coronary heart disease, CT-FFR has been applied in the preoperative risk assessment of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in o

An efficient algorithm for Cholesky decomposition of electron repulsion integrals.

Approximating the electron repulsion integrals using inner projections is a well-established approach to reduce the computational demands of electronic structure calculations. Here, we present a two-step Cholesky decomposition algorithm where only the elements of the Cholesky basis (the pivots) are determined in the pivoting procedure. This allows for improved screening, significantly reducing memory usage and computational cost. After the pivots have been determined, the Cholesky vectors are constructed using the inner projection formulation. We also propose a partitioned decomposition approa

Identification of novel anthrax toxin countermeasures using in silico methods.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming, gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF) is the primary anthrax toxin component responsible for cytotoxicity and host death and has been a heavily researched target for design of postexposure therapeutics in the event of a bioterror attack. Various computer-aided drug design methodologies have proven useful for pinpointing new antianthrax drug scaffolds, optimizing existing leads and probes, and elucidating key mechanisms of action. We present a selection of in silico virtual

Computer generated microsurgical anatomy of the supraclinoid portion of the internal carotid artery.

In this article we demonstrate a computer graphics model to represent the microsurgical anatomy of the supraclinoid portion of the internal carotid artery (ICA). The source of the input data is a variety of publications showing the detailed anatomy of the area. A computer graphics model of the supraclinoid portion of the ICA and relevant structures including perforators and cranial nerves was made under full colour shading using a Z-buffer algorithm. Complicated microstructures including perforators or cranial nerves are depicted in detail, and can be rotated and viewed from any direction, and

Pyroelectric properties of Pb[Zr0.5Ti0.5]O3 studied with a hybrid density functional method.

The primary and secondary pyroelectric coefficients of four different ordered models of lead zirconate titanate Pb[Zr0.5Ti0.5]O3 solid solution have been investigated with a hybrid density functional method. Phonon anharmonicity and finite-temperature phonon properties necessary for the study of primary pyroelectricity are determined with the use of self-consistent phonon theory. Secondary pyroelectricity and lattice thermal expansion are investigated with quasi-harmonic approximation. The lattice thermal conductivity and other physical properties are also reported at the same level of theory.

Software for symptom association analysis in pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) disease is a serious complication of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Cardiorespiratory symptoms such as apnea, oxygen desaturation and bradycardia may be related to GER. Thus, the recommended diagnostic methodology in pediatric patients requires 24-h synchronized esophageal and cardiorespiratory monitoring. However, there is no computer tool available for this purpose and therefore, researchers and physicians are forced to seek for customized solutions. This paper presents an open source computer program for the analysis of symptom association. It allows a conve

An innovative approach to predict the development of adult respiratory distress syndrome in patients with blunt trauma.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary contusion (PC) is a common injury associated with blunt chest trauma. Complications such as pneumonia and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) occur in up to 50% of patients with PC. The ability to predict which PC patients are at increased risk of developing complications would be of tremendous clinical utility. In this study, we test the hypothesis that a novel method that objectively measures percent PC can be used to identify patients at risk to develop ARDS after injury. METHODS: Patients with unilateral or bilateral PC with an admission chest computed tomogra

Computer-aided Drug Design for Alzheimer's Disease: Recent Advancements and Future Perspectives.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by a decline in cognitive function and memory loss, primarily resulting from cholinergic dysfunction, the accumulation of amyloid plaques, the formation of tau tangles, and the progressive degeneration of neurons. While existing treatments offer limited symptomatic relief, they do not effectively halt or reverse the underlying progression of the disease, presenting a major global challenge in Alzheimer's research. Developing therapeutic strategies for AD remains complex, largely due to the inability of current medications to signi

Targeting the Essential Transcription Factor HP1043 of Helicobacter pylori: A Drug Repositioning Study.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens are a very challenging problem nowadays. Helicobacter pylori is one of the most widespread and successful human pathogens since it colonizes half of the world population causing chronic and atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma, and even gastric adenocarcinoma. Moreover, it displays resistance to numerous antibiotics. One of the H. pylori pivotal transcription factors, HP1043, plays a fundamental role in regulating essential cellular processes. Like other bacterial transcription factors, HP1043 does not display a e

Rheological properties of super critical CO2 with CuO: Multi-scale computational modeling.

A multi-scale computational methodology based on the density functional theory and molecular dynamics has been used to investigate the rheological properties of super critical CO2 with CuO nano-particle (NP). Density functional theory which treats the electron density as the central variable has been used to explore the adsorption of CO2 molecules on the two most stable CuO surfaces [i.e., (111) and (011)] at absolute zero. The results of this theory would provide valuable information to make CuO NPs with the surface where the CO2 adsorption is maximum in order to have a stronger mono-layer of
