Producing and processing self-propelled motion in infancy.

Three experiments investigated 5- through 8-month-olds' ability to encode self-propelled and caused motion and examined whether processing of motion onset changes when crawling begins. Infants were habituated (Experiments 1 and 2) or familiarized (Experiment 3) with simple causal and noncausal launching events. They then viewed the caused-to-move and self-propelled objects from the events both stationary and side-by-side, and their preferential looking to the objects was assessed. Results revealed that 5- and 6-month-olds displayed a different pattern of looking than did 8-month-olds. More not

The role of local and global processing in the recognition of living and nonliving things.

We report a study on a patient (DW) with integrative visual agnosia and a category-specific recognition impairment for living things. We assessed DW's local and global processing and tested if his integrative agnosia could have led directly to his category-specific impairment. The main findings were: (i) DW was faster at identifying local compared to global letters. (ii) DW showed no local-to-global (or global-to-local) interference effects in selective attention tasks. (iii) DW showed a congruency effect in a divided attention task, suggesting that, when his attention was cued to both levels,

Are there lexicons?

Many models of the processing of printed or spoken words or objects or faces propose that systems of local representations of the forms of such stimuli--lexicons--exist. This is denied by partisans of the distributed-representation connectionist approach to cognitive modelling. An experimental paradigm of key theoretical importance here is lexical decision and its analogue in the domain of objects, object decision. How does each theoretical camp account for our ability to perform these two tasks? The localists say that the tasks are done by matching or failing to match a stimulus to a local re

Executive skills in Klinefelter's syndrome.

Executive skills are those involved in concept formation, problem solving, switching tasks, inhibiting inappropriate responses, initiating rapid and fluent responses, planning and sustained attention. Different patterns of disorder amongst these skills have been found in several developmental abnormalities including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Turner's syndrome (TS). This study explored, for the first time, executive skills in children with Klinefelter's syndrome (KS), a sex chromosome abnormality in which there is one or more additional X-chromosomes. Intellige

Elephants dancing in my head: a developmental approach to children's concepts of specific pains.

The present study produced an empirically derived, developmental continuum of children's understanding of specific pains. Subjects of 5 age groups: preschool (ages 3-4), first grade (ages 6-7), third grade (ages 8-10), sixth grade (ages 11-12) and college freshmen (ages 18-23) were interviewed with open-ended questions. The subjects were questioned extensively about 3 specific types of pain: an injury (skinned knee), a medical intervention (injection), and an illness (headache). Subjects were asked to describe each pain, tell why the pain hurt, and state the value of the pain. Their answers we

Comprehension of syntactically indicated sequence by Down's syndrome and other mentally retarded adults.

The ability to comprehend syntactically ordered sequence by Down's syndrome adults and adults with mental retardation of no specific aetiology was studied. Both samples exhibited patterns of comprehension that resembled those of children who are not mentally retarded. However, the Down's syndrome individuals had significantly more difficulty when sequence was indicated by syntax with no supporting extralinguistic context. The Down's syndrome adults appeared to be arrested at an earlier stage of development than the other mentally retarded adults.

Instruction on Piagetian concepts for children with mental retardation.

Eighteen children with mild mental retardation were pretested on unidimensional classification (oddity), unidimensional seriation, number conservation, Slosson's Intelligence Test, and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT). The children were instructed on the Piagetian concepts twice per week for 4 months via a learning-set technique. All 315 problems (except 20 verbal classification and 15 verbal seriation items) involved concrete items. When posttested at the semester's end, the children had, with few exceptions, mastered the Piagetian concepts and made significant gains on performance

Facilitation of class-inclusion performance in mildly retarded adolescents: feedback and strategy training.

Two experiments were conducted to explore the feasibility of training mildly retarded adolescents to solve class-inclusion problems. In Experiment 1, the effects of training consisting primarily of feedback were investigated. In Experiment 2, training with feedback alone vs. training with feedback plus a counting strategy was compared. Both experiments assessed the generality of training effects to specific training and/or posttest formats. Results suggested that training was generally effective in improving performance with untrained class-inclusion problems on immediate and delayed posttests

Developmental Unity and Cultural Variation in Forms of Metarepresentational False Belief Understanding.

Around age four, children in urban, post-industrial societies begin to understand the subjectivity of beliefs and other mental states: they can be true or false, and they are aspectual, representing situations under specific descriptions. These two insights have been found to emerge in tandem, suggesting a shift toward a metarepresentational Theory of Mind. However, as evidence for this shift comes primarily from formally educated, urban, post-industrial societies, its broader generalizability remains speculative. Moreover, standard pretense-heavy false belief tasks may bias conclusions drawn

Spatio-temporal activity of brain electrical sources during processing of abstract social concepts.

concepts frequently refer to socialness, i.e. knowledge about interactions between people. Grounded cognition theories propose that such social concepts are represented in brain circuits involved in processing social interactions. The present event-related potential study investigated the time course of electrical brain activity in response to abstract social concepts compared to abstract control concepts presented during a lexical decision task. Analysis of estimated volume source activity revealed increased activity to social concepts in the left insula with an onset of 216 ms and somewhat l

Clinician Diagnostic Ratings and Countertransference Reactions Towards Grandiose and Vulnerable Narcissism.

BACKGROUND: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is known to comprise two distinct but connected phenotypes related to 'grandiosity' and 'vulnerability', respectively. While evidence suggests differing countertransference responses to narcissism subtype expression, no study has examined this using a qualitative methodology and explored associations with ratings of personality disorder severity. METHOD: Mental health clinicians (N = 180, 67% female, age = 38.9), completed qualitative clinical reflections and ratings of overall personality disorder severity towards two hypothetical vignettes

BACKGROUND: This paper presents the findings of a rapid needs assessment conducted at the request of the local health authority responsible for health care services, the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (Ontario, Canada), to inform health and social service planning. METHODS: We utilized concept mapping methodology to facilitate engagement with diverse stakeholders-more than 300 community members and service providers-with a focus on hard to reach populations. Key informant interviews with service providers were used to augment findings. RESULTS: Participants identified 48 un

Differential Roles of Ventral and Dorsal Streams for Conceptual and Production-Related Components of Tool Use in Acute Stroke Patients.

Impaired tool use despite preserved basic motor functions occurs after stroke in the context of apraxia, a cognitive motor disorder. To elucidate the neuroanatomical underpinnings of different tool use deficits, prospective behavioral assessments of 136 acute left-hemisphere stroke patients were combined with lesion delineation on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images for voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping. Deficits affecting both the selection of the appropriate recipient for a given tool (ToolSelect, e.g., choosing the nail for the hammer), and the performance of the typical tool-associate

Invariance detection in the brain: revealed in a stepwise category induction task.

A critical sub-process of category learning is detecting the invariance between categorical members. To examine brain activation associated with invariance detection at different steps of category learning, a stepwise category induction task was used in the present study. Within each trial, three stimuli were displayed sequentially, and participants were asked to learn the target category corresponding to the invariance among stimuli. Results revealed that invariance detection activated the fronto-parietal network. However, the frontal and parietal cortices functioned differently throughout th

Time course of visual attention in infant categorization of cats versus dogs: evidence for a head bias as revealed through eye tracking.

Previous looking time studies have shown that infants use the heads of cat and dog images to form category representations for these animal classes. The present research used an eye-tracking procedure to determine the time course of attention to the head and whether it reflects a preexisting bias or online learning. Six- to 7-month-olds were familiarized with cats or dogs in upright or inverted orientations and then tested with a novel cat and novel dog in the same orientation. In the upright orientation, infants fixated head over body throughout familiarization; with inversion, no head prefer

Animal neuropsychology: validation of the Intra-Dimensional Extra-Dimensional set shifting task for mice.

Research in animal neuropsychology is providing an exciting new generation of behavioral tests for mice that promise to overcome many of the limitations of current high-throughput testing, and provide direct animal homologues of clinically important measures in human research. Set shifting tasks are some of the best understood and widely used human neuropsychological tasks, with clinical relevance to traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, trichotillomania, and many other disorders. Here we report the first successful modification of a human set shifting n

The Darwinian concept of stress: benefits of allostasis and costs of allostatic load and the trade-offs in health and disease.

Why do we get the stress-related diseases we do? Why do some people have flare ups of autoimmune disease, whereas others suffer from melancholic depression during a stressful period in their life? In the present review possible explanations will be given by using different levels of analysis. First, we explain in evolutionary terms why different organisms adopt different behavioral strategies to cope with stress. It has become clear that natural selection maintains a balance of different traits preserving genes for high aggression (Hawks) and low aggression (Doves) within a population. The exi

Non-verbal semantic impairment in semantic dementia.

The clinical presentation of patients with semantic dementia is dominated by anomia and poor verbal comprehension. Although a number of researchers have argued that these patients have impaired comprehension of non-verbal as well as verbal stimuli, the evidence for semantic deterioration is mainly derived from tasks that include some form of verbal input or output. Few studies have investigated semantic impairment using entirely non-verbal assessments and the few exceptions have been based on results from single cases ([3]: Breedin SD, Saffran EM, Coslett HB. Reversal of the concreteness effec

Arithmetic facts without meaning.

The paper presents a single-case study of patient J.G. showing severe calculation problems (and also agraphia, finger agnosia, right-left disorientation and apraxia) after the surgery of a left parietal tumor. Although the patient completely lost conceptual knowledge of arithmetic, she preserved part of memorised fact knowledge (multiplications and some additions and subtractions). The study indicates that arithmetic facts can be represented at a superficial level without understanding of the operation performed. The study completes a valid double dissociation between two types of knowledge in

Conceptual apraxia in Alzheimer's disease.

Theoretical models of praxis have two major components, a praxis conceptual system that includes knowledge of tool use and mechanical knowledge and a praxis production system that includes the information needed to program skilled motor acts. Because patients with Alzheimer's disease may have an impairment of the central conceptual system, we wanted to learn if they had a conceptual apraxia by testing their knowledge of the type of actions associated with tool use, their ability to associate tools with objects that receive their action, their ability to understand the mechanical nature of prob
