Complications of unsafe abortion: case reports and the need for curriculum review in Nigeria.

Unsafe abortion remains a major reproductive health problem in Nigeria. These are 2 case reports of unsafe abortion, one performed by a patent medicine dealer where a false passage was created in the substance of the cervix to evacuate the uterus using a cannula. A piece of the cannula was left in situ for five years leading to chronic infection and infertility. The second case was performed by a medical practitioner for a second trimester abortion. He deliberately created a false passage in the substance of the cervix to evacuate the uterus leading to severe haemorrhage. We conclude that ther

Recommended core curriculum for the specialist training in surgical oncology within Europe.

Cancer incidence increases each year in Europe and the role of surgeons to diagnose and treat patients with cancer is pivotal. In Europe many cancer surgeons are organised in the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). Surgical oncology covers the treatment of solid tumours of the oro-eosophago-gastrointestinal tract, of parenchymal and endocrine organs and of skin, mesenchymal, neurogenic, bone and soft tissues. Surgical oncology also includes prevention, genetic counselling, specific diagnostic and staging procedures, rehabilitation and follow-up care. Surgical oncology is focused on m

A colorectal curriculum for general surgery residents: are we ready for needs assessment?

OBJECTIVE: The traditional scope of general surgery (GS) has been broadly encompassing. Although it is generally accepted that we need a more defined curriculum for GS training, the criteria for limiting its scope remain controversial. One approach is to perform a needs assessment, defined based on an analysis of current GS practice. The purpose of this study was to use such a needs assessment to model a subset of the GS curriculum in colon and rectal surgery. DESIGN: The numbers of colon and anorectal procedures performed in the prior 24 months by 982 GS taking the 2004 ABS Recertification E

Using the Rx for Change tobacco curriculum in advanced practice nursing education.

In today's health care system driven by quality outcome indicators and performance care measures, it is essential for nurses to know how to intervene with tobacco-dependent patients. This article discusses pilot results from the "Rx for Change: Clinician Assisted Tobacco Cessation Curriculum" intervention conducted at Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies using advanced practice students. The results reveal that 6 hours of tobacco-cessation training can increase knowledge and self-efficiency scores.

Impact of a dental/dental hygiene tobacco-use cessation curriculum on practice.

Tobacco use is the chief avoidable cause of morbidity and mortality in North America and is associated with increased risk for oral cancer and increased prevalence and severity of periodontitis and other oral conditions. By delivering two- to three-minute tobacco-use cessation counseling (TUCC), oral health professionals can achieve quit rates substantially higher than the spontaneous quit rate. However, many clinicians report lack of training and knowledge in TUCC as barriers to providing cessation counseling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether implementation of a comprehensive

LEAPPT: Leveraging gEnerative Artificial Intelligence-Pediatric Pulmonology Training. Curriculum and content development.

After redesigning the curriculum of the pediatric pulmonology fellowship program at Children's Mercy-Kansas City, leadership continued to make changes based on feedback from a faculty survey concerned about the quality and structure of didactics. These changes included leveraging generative artificial intelligence to create a detailed course content outline containing specific objectives and study points for each subject related to pediatric pulmonology. Using the content outline as a foundational reference for learners, fellowship leadership continues to enhance the curriculum by creating tes

Optometric Brain Injury Curriculum in Federal Residency Training Programs: A Consensus Report.

INTRODUCTION: Brain injury often impacts the visual system. Diagnosis and treatment of visual system problems related to brain injury is a field with less settled science and more variation in practice than most specialty fields. Most optometric brain injury residency programs are in federal clinics (VA and DoD). A consensus core curriculum has been created that will allow some consistency while facilitating program strengths. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Kern's curriculum development model and a focus group of subject matter experts were used to reach consensus in producing a core curriculum to pr

Cadaveric emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons using a bronchoscopy-enhanced curriculum.

BACKGROUND: Emergency cricothyrotomy training for non-surgeons is important as rare "cannot intubate or oxygenate events" may occur multiple times in a provider's career when surgical expertise is not immediately available. However, such training is highly variable and often infrequent, therefore, enhancing these experiences is important. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is bronchoscopy-enhanced cricothyrotomy training in cadavers feasible, and what are the potential benefits provided by this innovation for trainees? METHODS: This study was performed during implementation of a new program to train non-sur

Approach to Patients With High Anion Gap Metabolic Acidosis: Core Curriculum 2021.

The anion gap (AG) is a mathematical construct that compares the blood sodium concentration with the sum of the chloride and bicarbonate concentrations. It is a helpful calculation that divides the metabolic acidoses into 2 categories: high AG metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis-and thereby delimits the potential etiologies of the disorder. When the [AG] is compared with changes in the bicarbonate concentration, other occult acid-base disorders can be identified. Furthermore, finding that the AG is very small or negative can suggest several occult clinical disorder

Implementing a Portable, Simulation-Based Trauma Curriculum for Rural Hospitals: Planning Pilot Year.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma patients receiving care in rural settings face higher mortality rates than those at tertiary referral centers. Rural hospitals experience significant gaps in trauma care from limited access to specialists, procedural training, and standardized team-based education. In Georgia, over 20% of trauma patients come from rural areas where high-fidelity trauma training is limited. To address these disparities, we developed a trauma simulation curriculum for rural Georgia trauma providers. METHODS: A mixed-methods needs assessment was conducted to identify training needs reported

Evaluating undergraduate academic prerequisites across institution types in an integrated med-ical curriculum.

OBJECTIVES: This evaluation study examines how undergraduate courses, institution type, and the presence of a gap year relate to outcomes at an MD-granting medical school in the United States. METHODS: Archival educational data was analyzed from 1,476 matriculating students between 2017 and 2023. Variables included undergraduate science grade point average, medical college aptitude test subscale scores, course credit hours, institution type, and gap time since graduation. Correlational analyses and mean comparison between groups were conducted. RESULTS: Students' grade point average in requi

Creating Core Internal Medicine Residency POCUS Curriculum by Partnering With the Emergency Department.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) increasingly is recognized as a valuable bedside assessment tool; however, the most commonly cited barrier to starting a POCUS curriculum in Internal Medicine residency has been the lack of in-house experts. We propose collaborating with the emergency department because all of their faculty are POCUS trained during residency. METHODS: At the University of Texas Medical Branch, we partnered with the emergency department to create a hands-on core rotation starting in 2023 for all postgraduate year-1 residents to improve their skills, knowl

Learning across specialty lines: A systematic review informing curriculum design for intraprofessional education.

INTRODUCTION: Effective patient care relies on collaboration across medical and surgical specialties, yet medical education trains doctors within specialty specific silos. Intraprofessional education (IntraPE), defined as structured learning bringing together doctors from different specialties or enabling medical students to learn across two or more specialty perspectives, may support coordinated care. Understanding how educational interventions support collaboration within medicine is essential for patient centred care in complex healthcare systems. This review synthesised structured IntraPE

Bridge-Disease Curriculum Transfer Enables Smartphone-Based Balance Assessment in Rare Neurologic Disorders.

Video-based motor assessment could enable scalable assessment of neurological function, but rare-disease applications are constrained by extreme data scarcity and poor generalization from small cohorts. We develop and evaluate a smartphone-based balance-assessment framework in NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN), an ultra-rare disorder for which objective balance assessment is clinically valuable yet logistically challenging. At its core, a staged bridge-disease curriculum adapts a skeleton-based spatiotemporal graph model from large-scale action recognition through an intermediate Parkinson
