[Supervised daily mouth-rinsing with a 0.023% weak acid NaF solution. Results of a school-based program started at the age of four].

The principal means of preventing dental caries in Japan are dietary control and tooth-brushing. However, these measures in public health have not been conducive to a definite reduction of dental caries, while the use of fluorides has led to a remarkable and rapid decrease in caries prevalence. Fluoride mouth-rinsing are usually incorporated into the school-based programs. Many trials were carried out in the elementary schools and a 30-50% reduction in caries increment was reported. To provide greater benefits to the permanent teeth, therefore, it is suggested that fluoride mouth-rinsing shoul

Caries and fillings in the permanent dentition of cohorts of schoolchildren in Espoo, Finland.

The purpose of the study was to analyze longitudinally the timing of enamel caries and, thereafter, fillings in occlusal, proximal and smooth surfaces of the permanent dentition of cohorts of schoolchildren initially 7, 10, 13, and 15 yr old. Altogether 228 children were examined annually during a 3-year period. Enamel and dentin caries affected on an average less than 15% of the occlusal surfaces in the first molars and at most 4% of the premolars; fillings proved to be the main determinant of the DF-scores for occlusal surfaces. On the other hand, decay was the main determinant of DF-scores

Caries frequency in children with controlled diabetes.

The frequency of caries was assessed in 33 diabetic children in whom the diabetes required insulin and dietary restriction and had been diagnosed before eruption of the permanent teeth. The frequency of caries and the number of erupted teeth were obtained from the dental records of the school dental service. Age- and sex-matched non-diabetic classmates served as controls. The mean number of DFS at the last dental examination of the diabetic children was 13.4, compared with 20.5 in the controls. The difference was largest in 12- to 14-year-old children, particularly in the premolar region, wher

Oral Health and Caries Prevention: How Tongue Hygiene Helps Maintain Balance of Microbiota and Overall Health in Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The tongue harbors about two-thirds of the microorganisms present in the mouth; the stable bacterial population consists mainly of aerobic and facultative anaerobic streptococci. These bacterial colonies, found more frequently on the tongue than on the outside of the hard part of the dental enamel in children younger than 18 months, suggest that the tongue is a potential bacterial reservoir. The aim of this review is to examine the scientific literature to clarify whether the mechanical removal of bacterial biofilm on the tongue can have a positive effect on caries preve

Oral processing behavior and dental caries; an insight into a new relationship.

INTRODUCTION: Previous evidence suggests an individual variation in the preferred oral processing behavior. Individuals can be classified as firm processing(FPL) or soft processing likers(SPL). FPL(crunchers and chewers) prefer using their teeth while SPL(smooshers and suckers) prefer using the tongue and the palate when processing different food items. Variation in the preferred oral processing behavior has been associated with differences in food texture preference and eating time. Time is one of the factors directly related to the development of dental caries(tooth decay). Oral retention an

Development and external known-groups validation of a severity-adjusted caries index (SACI): An age-stratified weighted approach.

BACKGROUND: Conventional caries indices, such as Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surfaces (DMFS), remain widely used. However, they do not adequately distinguish between lesion severity, restoration extent, and caries-related tooth loss, nor do they account for differences in the available tooth surfaces. This study aimed to develop a Severity-Adjusted Caries Index (SACI), an age-stratified and surface-normalized composite index designed as a structurally differentiated refinement of conventional cumulative caries-burden measures, and to evaluate its
