PURPOSE: Previous reports have raised the possibility that, compared to pigmented rats, albino rats might be night blind. The purpose of this study was to reinvestigate this issue by comparing the dark-adaptation process of the pigmented Long-Evans (LE) and albino Sprague Dawley (SD) rats.
METHODS: Scotopic ERGs obtained from LE and SD rats were recorded following periods of dark adaptation 0.5, 3 and 12 h. Intensity response functions were generated with flashes of white light spanning over a 7 log-unit range with a maximal intensity of 8 cd x s x m(-2) in energy.

In a series of asymptomatic patients with primary biliary cirrhosis there was a significant impairment of dark adaptation thresholds as compared with a control group. Vitamin A levels were abnormally low in only two of the patients and these two both showed high dark adaptation thresholds. The electrooculogram was reduced in only the most severely affected case. It is suggested that visual function tests should be performed alongside vitamin A level measurements before deciding on treatment.

Following a long series of injections of homologous immunoglobulin in complete and incomplete Freund's adjuvant into mink, a moderate elevation in the level of gammaglobulin in the serum was observed in a few animals. Relatively mild pathological changes also were seen in liver, spleen, lymph nodes, lungs and kidney. It is concluded that the injection of Freund's adjuvant, under the experimental conditions described, produced lesions which were readily distinguishable from the lesions characteristic of aleutian disease of mink.
