Alcohol expectancy has proven to be a powerful predictor of drinking behavior, including alcoholism, in a wide range of groups. Three recent studies that begin to address expectancy's relation to other alcoholism vulnerability factors are reviewed. Results indicate that: (1) expectancies for reinforcement from alcohol predate teens' first drinking experiences; (2) expectancies predict subsequent drinking onset and problem drinking; (3) high initial expectancies lead to a vicious cycle of progressively more drinking and more positive expectancies during the adolescent years; (4) expectancy medi

Alcohol use by teenagers is a widespread and well-documented behavior in many Western nations. In contrast, very little is known about the drinking habits and attitudes toward alcohol of teenagers in the world's developing countries. In this paper we propose that adolescents learn about alcohol as part of the socialization process, just as they learn other social behaviors. Central to this learning is the development of a set of expectancies within one's culture about the effects of alcohol upon the user. These expectancies are important determinants of subsequent drinking behavior. An underst

A 17-year-old boy was referred to our institution for a re-evaluation of congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. A water restriction test revealed no urine concentration or volume reduction and a subsequent pitressin test revealed a lack of an anti-diuretic response. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus was confirmed, and the patient was treated using trichlormethiazide 4 mg, indomethacin 175 mg, and desmopressin 20 μg. His blood pressure and weight were not controlled owing to polydipsia and polyuria secondary to acquired excessive water drinking behavior. Repeated admissions for weight control

BACKGROUND: Biological factors are known to influence disease trajectories and treatment effectiveness in alcohol addiction and preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that sex is an important factor influencing disease dynamics in alcohol dependence. Another critical factor is age at first intoxicating drink, which has been identified as a risk factor for later alcohol binging. Preclinical research allows prospective monitoring of rodents throughout the lifespan, providing very detailed information that cannot be acquired in humans. Lifetime monitoring in rodents can be conducted under hig

UNLABELLED: The new Brazilian Traffic Code considers drinking and driving as a traffic crime. A health behavior model suggests that much of the young people's risky behavior is not planned and that questions measuring the willingness to drink and drive are useful. In face of the importance of drinking and driving as a national health problem, the objective of the present study was to analyze the behavior willingness among youngsters about to receive their driver's licenses.
METHODS: The study was carried out at the Sao Paulo Department of Traffic (DETRAN-SP) in 1998. Data were obtained from a

Spaced feeding of individual food pellets to food-deprived rats induced excessive drinking after pellet delivery if water was continuously available. When access to water was restricted to a portion of the inter-pellet interval, and competition from food-reinforced bar pressing was removed, excessive drinking occurred whenever drinking was possible. This finding extends the generality of accounts of excessive behavior that implicate induction by apparently unrelated scheduling characteristics of the environment.

BACKGROUND: To investigate if specific sow and piglet behavioral characteristics could be used diagnostically, this case-cohort study of the behavior of sows and piglets during the periparturient period (from 24 h before the birth of first piglet to 24 h after the birth of last piglet) was conducted. Data included 32 sows diagnosed with PDS (PDS+) vs. 37 healthy matched controls (PDS-) and their litters.
RESULTS: A significant change from active behavior with many postural changes to a more passive behavior was noted in connection with parturition. Sow nesting behavior was less frequent in PD

Objective: Substance use is a public health concern and cross-sectional studies have found that impulsivity and drinking motives influence substance use in emerging adults. Despite these findings, longitudinal studies with nuanced measures of impulsivity and drinking motives are needed. Participants: The current study investigated the three-year relationship between impulsivity-related traits, drinking motives, sex, and drinking outcomes in a sample of 509 college students (47.47% male; 81% White). Methods: The effects of impulsivity traits and drinking motives on problematic drinking outcomes

Adolescents in sexual minority groups are known to be at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases through risky sexual behavior. However, few studies have examined associations between sexual orientation and risky sexual behavior and sexually transmitted diseases in Korean adolescents. Therefore, this cross-sectional study used raw data from the Tenth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey to explore these relationships. Logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations between risky sexual behavior and sexual orientation in adolescents. The participants were

Using data from the longitudinal Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, the aims of the current study were to examine associations between postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use and toddler behavior problems, taking both observed and unobserved confounding factors into account by employing fixed effects regression models. Postnatal maternal heavy alcohol use (defined as drinking alcohol 4 or more times a week, or drinking 7 units or more per alcohol use episode) and toddler internalizing and externalizing behavior problems were assessed when the toddlers were aged 18 and 36 months. Maternal ps

To determine the neurobehavioral consequences of alcohol use during different periods in gestation, we compared the behavior of 103 neonates born to women who: drank a mean of 12 ounces of absolute alcohol per week throughout pregnancy; drank a mean of 14 ounces of absolute alcohol and were otherwise comparable to the first group but stopped drinking in the second trimester, and never drank at all during pregnancy. Low socioeconomic status, predominantly black women applying for prenatal care at a large inner city hospital were recruited in the second trimester of pregnancy, and those reportin

AIM: Previous studies reported inconsistent results on the effects of maternal smoking and drinking on pre-eclampsia (PE). Furthermore, some studies indicated that the development of PE may also be attributable to unhealthy behaviors from men. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the association between smoking and drinking by couples and PE in the Asian population.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study including 34 104 couples was conducted. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of couples' smoking and drinking behaviors and their interaction. The a

This report describes the first reported case of compulsive water drinking (CWD) in an adolescent with anorexia nervosa (AN). The CWD appears to be a bulimic behavior with potentially serious medical complications. The concurrence of AN and CWD suggests possible hypothalamic dysfunction of food and water regulation.

Objective: The current study examined (1) differences in close friend drinking norms from pre-pandemic to during the pandemic, and (2) how COVID-19 social drinking contexts (in-person, virtual) moderated associations between during-pandemic close friend norms and consumption. Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 469; 75.5% female; 57.6% White) were recruited from a minority-serving university in the United States. Methods: Participants completed an online survey about pre-pandemic (retrospectively assessed) and during pandemic (Oct - Dec 2020) close friend descriptive drinking norms, pand

In rats with acute hypo- and hyperglycemia the initial effects of free angiotensin IV and its complexes with functionally different carrier proteins (transport protein BSA, neuron-specific protein S100b) on hemodynamics and behavior of rats were qualitatively altered, in comparison with those in intact animals. At the same time, free angiotensin IV under conditions of hypo- and hyperglycemia paradoxically acquired functions of angiotensin II (moderate hypertension, tachycardia, polydipsia and activation of instrumental drinking behavior). Concurrently, complexes of angiotensin IV with BSA and

Objective: Perceptions of friends' approval of drinking behaviors (i.e., injunctive drinking norms) play a central role in shaping college students' alcohol use behaviors. However, we know little about the extent that students' perceptions of friends' approval fluctuate over time and whether there are within-person associations between these injunctive norms and alcohol use. To fill this knowledge gap, we estimated within-person variability in perceptions of friends' approval of alcohol use across a 12-month period and examined within-person associations between perceptions of friends' approva

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating and harmful drinking commonly co-occur, which worsens the physical and psychological consequences associated with either behavior alone. Reward processing alterations have been demonstrated among individuals who engage in binge eating or harmful drinking alone; however, there is limited understanding of how different components of reward processing might relate to both behaviors together and in isolation. The current systematic review aimed to consolidate knowledge on the shared and unique reward processes associated with binge eating and harmful drinking, with findings

BACKGROUND: A shift from goal-directed toward habitual control has been associated with alcohol dependence. Whether such a shift predisposes to risky drinking is not yet clear. We investigated how goal-directed and habitual control at age 18 predict alcohol use trajectories over the course of 3 years.
METHODS: Goal-directed and habitual control, as informed by model-based (MB) and model-free (MF) learning, were assessed with a two-step sequential decision-making task during functional magnetic resonance imaging in 146 healthy 18-year-old men. Three-year alcohol use developmental trajectories

OBJECTIVE: Heavy drinking is common among men who have sex with men (MSM) and significantly increases HIV acquisition risk. MSM who report heavy drinking also report higher cannabis use, which has also been associated with sexual behaviors known to elevate HIV transmission risk. Despite evidence of associations at the between-subjects level, the effects of alcohol and cannabis use on sexual risk behavior among MSM who engage in heavy drinking are largely unknown. The current study used ecological momentary assessment to examine the between- and within-subject associations of heavy drinking, ca
