Drought-induced amplification of local and regional West Nile virus infection rates in New Jersey.

ABSTRACT This study looked at the influence of interannual variations in temperature and precipitation on seasonal mosquito abundances, the prevalence of West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) in the northeastern United States, and the capacity for local mosquito communities to maintain and transmit WNV, defined as vector community competence. Vector and virus surveillance took place within Middlesex County in New Jersey over two transmission seasons (2010 and 2011). Drought conditions during the 2010 season were associated with significant increases in the number of bloo

Calmodulin-binding protein CBP60g is a positive regulator of both disease resistance and drought tolerance in Arabidopsis.

UNLABELLED: Calmodulin-binding proteins (CBPs) have been known to be involved in both biotic and abiotic stress responses. Recently, two closely related CBPs, Arabidopsis SAR Deficient 1 and CBP60g, were found to belong to a new family of transcription factors that regulate salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis triggered by microbe-associated molecular patterns. In this study, we found that overexpression of CBP60g in Arabidopsis caused elevated SA accumulation, increased expression of the defense genes, and enhanced resistance to Pseudomonas syringae. In addition to the enhanced defense response,

Improving the mental health of rural New South Wales communities facing drought and other adversities.

OBJECTIVE: NSW has just experienced its worst drought in a century. As years passed with insufficient rain, drought-related mental health problems became evident on farms. Our objective is to describe how, in response, the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program was introduced in 2007 to raise awareness of drought-related mental health needs and help address these needs in rural and remote NSW. The program has since expanded to include other forms of rural adversity, including recent floods. SETTING: Rural NSW. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS, INTERVENTIONS: Designed around community development principle

Nitric oxide induces stomatal closure and enhances the adaptive plant responses against drought stress.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a very active molecule involved in many and diverse biological pathways where it has proved to be protective against damages provoked by oxidative stress conditions. In this work, we studied the effect of two NO donors, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine SNP-treated on the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to water stress conditions. After 2 and 3 h of drought, detached wheat leaves pretreated with 150 microM SNP retained up to 15% more water than those pretreated with water or NO(2)(-)/NO(3)(-). The effect of SNP treatment on water retentio

Breeding innovations focused on drought tolerance, and Nitrogen and phosphorus uptake, for sustainable and climate-resilient sugarcane.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a strategic agro-industrial crop with a central role in global sugar production, bioethanol generation, and the development of sustainable bioeconomy systems. Beyond sugar, sugarcane by-products such as bagasse, molasses, and vinasse represent valuable resources for renewable energy, biofuels, biopolymers, and circular production systems. However, climate change threatens sugarcane productivity worldwide through increased temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, and intensified drought events, directly affecting biomass accumulation, photosynthesis, and crop yie

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and hydraulic-thermal coordination under combined drought and heat stress in soybean.

Concurrent drought and heat waves impose a non-additive physiological constraint on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), creating a physiological trade-off between hydraulic preservation, which favors stomatal closure to prevent cavitation, and evaporative cooling, which requires sustained stomatal opening to mitigate thermal damage. This review synthesizes physiological and molecular evidence to develop a conceptual framework for understanding how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may influence plant responses under combined stress. Available evidence indicates that improved plant water status

A calcium-independent CDPK positively regulates drought resistance in maize by modulating the ABA signaling pathway.

Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs/CPKs) play crucial roles in plant responses to drought stress. In this study, we reveal that ZmCPK1, an atypical CDPK whose kinase activity is calcium-independent, acts as a positive regulator of drought resistance in maize. ZmCPK1 is a constitutively active kinase interacting with and phosphorylates multiple components of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway, including ZmSLAC1, ZmSnRK2.10, and ZmPP2C11. In the absence of ABA, ZmCPK1 may phosphorylate ZmSnRK2.10 and the N-terminus of ZmSLAC1. ZmPP2C11 reverses this phosphorylation by directly depho

Cysteine derivatives coordinate photosynthetic performance and osmotic adjustment to enhance drought tolerance in vegetable soybean.

BACKGROUND: Drought stress severely constrains photosynthetic efficiency in vegetable soybean. However, the role of cysteine-based biostimulants in coordinating photosynthetic regulation and osmotic adjustment remains poorly understood. This study evaluated how N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and N-acetylcysteine trisulfide (NAC-TS) modulate photosynthetic function, photoprotection, and osmotic adjustment to enhance growth and reproductive performance under drought in two vegetable soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivars with different yielding capabilities and drought sensitivities (UVE17 and AGS429)

Biochemical Adaptations of Zea mays L. to Abiotic Stress: A Focus on Drought, Salinity, and Heavy Metals.

Maize (Zea mays L.), one of the most significant cereal crops in the world, is very susceptible to abiotic stresses that include drought, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity, among others, all of which pose a risk to food and nutrition security in the face of climate change. These stresses disrupt cellular homeostasis, cause oxidative damage, inhibit photosynthesis, and eventually lower yield. This work is a synthesis of recent progress in knowledge of the biochemical, physiological, and molecular adaptation of maize to these conditions. The key processes involve reactive oxygen species (ROS) a

Melatonin-mediated cross-stress protection in tomato under individual and combined salinity and drought stress.

Tomato production is increasingly threatened by the co-occurrence of salinity and drought, but the protective mechanisms of melatonin under their combination are not fully understood. This study investigated whether foliar-applied melatonin could mitigate the individual and combined effects of salinity and drought in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Plants were exposed to 0 or 100 mM NaCl and maintained at 90 or 60% field capacity. Melatonin (100 μM) was sprayed three times at five-day intervals, beginning one day before stress application, and plants were sampled after three weeks. Salinity and

Overexpression of the tomato SlLEA_2-26 gene enhances the tolerance to drought and salt stresses in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are pivotal in conferring cellular tolerance to abiotic stresses and sustaining plant growth and development. However, systematic functional characterization of the tomato SlLEA_2 gene family remains limited. To elucidate the role of tomato SlLEA_2-26 in abiotic stress responses, this study cloned its full-length cDNA. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that SlLEA_2-26 exhibits predominant expression in flowers and fruits, and is strongly induced by drought, salt, Cu2+, and Pb2+ stresses. Three homozygous Arabidopsis thaliana T3 Sl

Drought to deluge: Differential impacts of snow on mountain chickadee reproduction across the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Changing climates are reshaping animal populations, but our understanding of how demographic trends are shaped by individual responses to local environmental conditions has historically been limited to long-term studies with restricted spatial scales. Participatory science (i.e. citizen science) programs have improved our ability to identify geographic variation in population-level trends, but these programs often lack insight into the individual-level processes that underly such variation. Here we present a new research framework that uses long-term data to validate participatory science obse

Integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics reveal regulatory networks in Poa annua under combined drought and cold.

In natural environments, plants are often exposed to multiple abiotic stresses simultaneously. Their combined effects usually cause more severe damage than a single stress. However, little is known about the coordinated response mechanisms of cool-season turfgrass to combined drought and cold stress. Two accessions of Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) with contrasting stress tolerance were used in this study: Huangzhong (HZ, tolerant) and Zhouqu (ZQ, sensitive). Physiological phenotyping, stomatal behavior observation, transcriptomics, and metabolomics were integrated to systematically compare t

Distinct root signaling and anatomy associate with convergent leaf responses to drought and salinity in grapevine rootstocks.

Drought and salinity seriously threaten grapevine productivity by inducing convergent leaf phenotypes through distinct upstream signals. This study investigated how abscisic acid (ABA) dynamics, root anatomical traits and zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP) content influence tolerance strategies in five rootstocks (140 Ruggeri, Kober 5BB, Dog Ridge, M2 and M4) grown in an aeroponic system. Our results reveal that, although both stresses drastically reduce stomatal conductance and net CO2 assimilation, the underlying signalling pathways diverge radically. Drought was closely associated with genotype-dep

Quantifying Carbon Losses Associated with Photorespiration and Drought Stress in Two Dominant Mediterranean Pine Species.

Photorespiration and drought-induced stomatal closure are two important physiological constraints that reduce carbon assimilation and productivity in C3 forest trees under Mediterranean climatic conditions. Türkiye's two dominant commercial pine species, Pinus brutia Ten. (Calabrian pine) and Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold subsp. pallasiana (Anatolian black pine), together cover approximately 8.15 million hectares. This study integrated published gas-exchange measurements, radiation-use efficiency estimates from MODIS, official forest inventory data, and dendrochronological growth records into a coun

The PtoERF1-PtomiR393a-PtoFBL4 module confers drought tolerance via ABA-auxin crosstalk in Populus.

Drought stress limits forest tree growth and adaptation, with xylem vessels critical for hydraulic transport and structural integrity. However, the molecular mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA)-auxin interaction in regulating vessel morphogenesis under water-deficit conditions remain unclear. Here, we identified PtomiR393a, a drought-responsive microRNA in Populus tomentosa that mediates crosstalk between ABA and auxin signaling pathways under drought stress. Suppressing PtomiR393 enhanced drought tolerance and growth, whereas its overexpression had the opposite effect. Under drought conditions,

Drought conditions reorder plant communities through expansion of spatially sparse and temporally intermittent species.

The frequency and severity of droughts are increasing in grasslands globally. Forecasting changes in community composition is challenging due to the direct and indirect effects of drought as well as varied species ecologies. Rare species are predicted to be more susceptible to perturbations, but extreme drought may also disproportionately reduce common species that are well adapted to modal environmental conditions. Resolving these contrasting effects is key to predicting species reordering in response to extreme drought. We explored how species drought responses varied by their spatial and te

Starch metabolism and stomatal regulation enhance drought resilience in barley: an integrated multi-omics analysis.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of drought tolerance in barley is crucial for food security. This study employed integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate drought responses in tolerant (EC_S1) and sensitive (Baudin) barley. We identified key differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and metabolites (DEMs), highlighting genotype-specific strategies in stress adaptation. The drought-tolerant EC_S1 exhibited enhanced activation of pathways related to plant hormone signaling, antioxidant metabolism (e.g., glutathione), and energy mobilization. Identification and functional annotation of drought-induced molecular pathways in sugarcane using suppression subtractive hybridization.

BACKGROUND: Wild ancestors of sugarcane, in particular Saccharum spontaneum, are inherently tolerant to abiotic stress. Interspecific hybrids derived from S. spontaneum possess agronomically desirable traits in addition to their potential for sustaining themselves in drought-stressed conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: In our study, suppression subtractive hybridisation was used to identify drought-responsive candidate transcripts (DRCTs) under water deficit conditions in AS 04-1687 and TS-GS 2024, which were validated by physiological and molecular expression analysis.
