The collagen receptor DDR2 regulates proliferation and its elimination leads to dwarfism.

The discoidin domain receptor 2 (DDR2) is a member of a subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases whose ligands are fibrillar collagens, and is widely expressed in postnatal tissues. We have generated DDR2-deficient mice to establish the in vivo functions of this receptor, which have remained obscure. These mice exhibit dwarfism and shortening of long bones. This phenotype appears to be caused by reduced chondrocyte proliferation, rather than aberrant differentiation or function. In a skin wound healing model, DDR2-/- mice exhibit a reduced proliferative response compared with wild-type littermat

Dwarfism in Dexter cattle is not caused by the mutations in FGFR3 responsible for achondroplasia in humans.

Dexter cattle carry a genetic defect causing a dwarf phenotype in the heterozygotes (Dx+/-), while homozygotes (Dx+/+) are stillborn with extreme shortening of limbs and gross craniofacial defects and are described as 'bulldog' calves. The heterozygous phenotype has been likened to achondroplastic dwarfism in humans (ACH), which has recently been shown to be the result of mutations in the transmembrane region of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. We have sequenced the transmembrane region of bovine FGFR3 from normal Dexter cattle (Dx-/-) and bulldog calves (Dx+/+). The seque

[Campomelic dwarfism. Its placement in the heterogeneous group of congenital bowing of the limbs].

The campomelic (camptomelic) dwarfism is a rare congenital syndrome which includes, in addition to typical angulations of femora and tibiae (campomelia or camptomelia = bowed or bent limbs), other skeletal abnormalities and visceral lesions, particularly of the brain and of the respiratory tract, which are almost always responsible of early death. Congenital bowing of limbs are seen in various conditions: as isolated deformity (or component of a strictly localised deformity); as integrating part of a more extensive syndrome (the campomelic dwarfism falls within this subgroup); as secondary ele

[Panhypopituitarism and dwarfism in a man with a primary empty sella turcica (author's transl)].

Endocrine features associated with the primary empty sella turcica syndrom are rare; they are usually related to a pituitary microadenoma and more rarely to an idiopathic panhypop ituitarism. A pituitary dwarfism with an idiopathic panhypopituitarism of hypothalamic origin, associated with an "empty" sella turcica containing functional and stimulable pituitary tissue, is reported in a 27 year old male Moraccan.

Developmental abnormalities of the occipital bone in human chondrodystrophies (achondroplasia and thanatophoric dwarfism).

Specific developmental malformations have been demonstrated in the occipital bone of two chondrodysplastic disorders (achondroplasia and thanatophoric dwarfism). Analysis of these malformations indicates that the occipital bone is primary affected in these disorders. In both cases, the endochondral-derived components of the occipital bone (the basioccipital, the two lateral parts, and the planum nuchale of the squama occipitalis) have failed to grow properly and are smaller and shorter than normal. On the other hand, the planum occipitalis of the squama, which derives from intramembranous ossi

Characterization of the molecular mechanism underlying the dwarfism of dsh mutant watermelon plants.

Developing dwarf watermelon is a major objective among breeders. The dsh dwarf watermelon germplasm developed in our laboratory is genetically stable. We previously produced preliminary evidence that Cla010726, which encodes a gibberellin 20-oxidase-like protein, is the primary gene controlling dwarfism in watermelon. However, the underlying genetic mechanism was unknown. In this study, we characterized the spontaneous recessive mutant dsh, which is a gibberellin (GA)-deficient mutant. Many of the phenotypic traits of dsh plants are similar to those of known GA-deficient mutants. The dsh plants

Primary Dwarfism, Microcephaly, and Chorioretinopathy due to a PLK4 Mutation in Two Siblings.

INTRODUCTION: Primary autosomal recessive microcephalies (MCPHs) are characterized by primary dwarfism with MCPH and may present delayed psychomotor development and visual impairment. Biallelic loss of function variants in the PLK4 gene, which encodes the polo-like kinase 4 protein involved in centriole biogenesis, has been recently identified in several patients with MCPH and various ethnic backgrounds. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe 2 siblings of different sex from Equatorial Guinea harboring a homozygous frameshift mutation in PLK4 (c.1299_1303del, p.Phe433Leufs*6). A Seckel syndrome

Dwarfism of high-monolignol Arabidopsis plants is rescued by ectopic LACCASE overexpression.

Lignin is a key secondary cell wall chemical constituent, and is both a barrier to biomass utilization and a potential source of bioproducts. The Arabidopsis transcription factors MYB58 and MYB63 have been shown to upregulate gene expression of the general phenylpropanoid and monolignol biosynthetic pathways. The overexpression of these genes also results in dwarfism. The vascular integrity, soluble phenolic profiles, cell wall lignin, and transcriptomes associated with these MYB-overexpressing lines were characterized. Plants with high expression of MYB58 and MYB63 had increased ectopic ligni

A case of dwarfism in 6th century Italy: Bioarchaeological assessment of a hereditary disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The skeletal remains of a short-statured individual (T17) are described and a differential diagnosis performed to determine the etiology of the condition. MATERIALS: An individual considered pathologically short in stature was discovered in the burial site of Piazza XX Settembre, Modena (northern Italy). METHODS: Morphological and morphometric analyses were performed, and T17 was compared to dwarfs from other localities and periods and to the adult female population from the same site. A paleopathological survey was undertaken to assess the degree of the skeletal elements of T17 w

Diagnosis and characterization of duck beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome in Chongqing of China.

Duck beak atrophy and dwarfism syndrome (BADS) is a newly emerged disease in China since 2015. In October 2017, an unidentified disease occurred in Cherry Valley ducks, Chongqing municipality, the southwest of China. The affected birds showed short beak and growth retardation clinical signs. The disease caused approximately 20.00% morbidity and serious weight loss due to retarded growth. In order to identify the causative agent of BADS, liver, spleen, lung and heart samples were collected for virus isolation, hemagglutination test, PCR identification, and partial gene sequencing. The isolated

Deletion in the EVC2 gene causes chondrodysplastic dwarfism in Tyrolean Grey cattle.

During the summer of 2013 seven Italian Tyrolean Grey calves were born with abnormally short limbs. Detailed clinical and pathological examination revealed similarities to chondrodysplastic dwarfism. Pedigree analysis showed a common founder, assuming autosomal monogenic recessive transmission of the defective allele. A positional cloning approach combining genome wide association and homozygosity mapping identified a single 1.6 Mb genomic region on BTA 6 that was associated with the disease. Whole genome re-sequencing of an affected calf revealed a single candidate causal mutation in the Elli

Mandible shape and dwarfism in squirrels (Mammalia, Rodentia): interaction of allometry and adaptation.

Squirrels include several independent lineages of dwarf forms distributed into two ecological groups: the dwarf tree and flying squirrels. The mandible of dwarf tree squirrels share a highly reduced coronoid process and a condylar process drawn backwards. Dwarf flying squirrels on the other hand, have an elongated coronoid process and a well-differentiated condylar process. To interpret such a difference, Elliptic Fourier Transform was used to evaluate how mandible shape varies with dwarfism in sciurids. The results obtained show that this clear-cut difference cannot be explained by a simple a
