The prevalence of specific learning disorder in mathematics and comorbidity with other developmental disorders in primary school-age children.

Mathematics difficulties are common in both children and adults, and they can have a great impact on people's lives. A specific learning disorder in mathematics (SLDM or developmental dyscalculia) is a special case of persistent mathematics difficulties, where the problems with maths cannot be attributed to environmental factors, intellectual disability, or mental, neurological or physical disorders. The aim of the current study was to estimate the prevalence rate of SLDM, any gender differences in SLDM, and the most common comorbid conditions. The DSM-5 provides details regarding these only f

Mental Health Problems in a School Setting in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: 10-20% of children and adolescents have a mental health problem of some type. Manifestations such as attention deficits, cognitive disturbances, lack of motivation, and negative mood all adversely affect scholastic development. It is often unclear what factors associated with school affect children's mental development and what preventive measures and interventions at school might be effective. METHODS: This review is based on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized and non-randomized controlled trials that were retrieved by a selective search in the PubMed, PsycInfo, an

[The epidermoid tumor of the lateral cerebral ventricle; report of a case (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of epidermoid tumor of the lateral ventricle. Epidermoid tumors are relatively uncommon intracranial lesions and the one situated in the lateral ventricle has not been reported in this country. A 42 year old house wife was admitted to Asahi Central Hospital on February 14, 1973, complaining of progressive right hemiparesis for 2 years. The patient had no headache and no other symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. Neurological examination revealed disorientation, dyscalculia, amnestic aphasia, morter dysphasia, right facial paresis (central type) and right hemip

The Assessment of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) Profile of Young Adults with Specific Learning Disorders: A Network Analysis Approach.

Specific learning disorders (SLD) affect 3-17% of the world's population and are associated with significant academic, emotional, and social challenges. This study compared Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) profiles and symptom networks between young adults with SLD and healthy controls. A total of 177 individuals with SLD (including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, or combinations thereof) and 200 age-matched controls from Saudi Arabia completed the MMPI-2-RF. Scale scores were compared using independent-samples t-tests, and network analysis was emp

Progressive transcortical sensory aphasia and progressive ideational apraxia owing to temporoparietal cortical atrophy.

BACKGROUND: In contrast to frontotemporal lobar degeneration, atrophy of the focal posterior lateral cortex has not been thoroughly studied. Three clinical types of focal cortical atrophy have been described: 1) logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia, which presents with impaired repetition despite normal articulation; 2) posterior cortical atrophy, which presents with prominent visuospatial deficits; and 3) primary progressive apraxia. All three clinical types are characterized by specific patterns of hypometabolism/hypoperfusion: the left posterior perisylvian area in the logopenic

Deficits in or Preservation of Basic Number Processing in Parkinson's Disease? A Registered Report.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) have a huge impact on patients, caregivers, and the health care system. Until now, diagnosis of mild cognitive impairments in PD has been established based on domain-general functions such as executive functions, attention, or working memory. However, specific numerical deficits observed in clinical practice have not yet been systematically investigated. PD-immanent deterioration of domain-general functions and domain-specific numerical areas suggests mechanisms of both primary and secondary dyscalculia. The current study systematical

Utility of testing for apraxia and associated features in dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Existing literature suggests that the presence or absence of apraxia and associated parietal deficits may be clinically relevant in differential diagnosis of dementia syndromes. AIM: This study investigated the profile of these features in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum disorders, at first presentation. METHODS: Retrospective case note analysis was undertaken in 111 patients who presented to the Oxford Cognitive Disorders Clinic, Oxford, UK, including 29 amnestic AD, 12 posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), 12 logopenic primary progressive aphas

A population-based longitudinal study of childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, IQ and subsequent risk of psychotic experiences in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia has a neurodevelopmental component to its origin, and may share overlapping pathogenic mechanisms with childhood neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs). Nevertheless, longitudinal studies of psychotic outcomes among individuals with NDs are limited. We report a population-based prospective study of six common childhood NDs, subsequent neurocognitive performance and the risk of psychotic experiences (PEs) in early adolescence. METHOD: PEs were assessed by semi-structured interviews at age 13 years. IQ and working memory were measured between ages 9 and 11 years. The prese

Private speech use in arithmetical calculation: relationship with phonological memory skills in children with and without mathematical difficulties.

The majority of recent studies conclude that children's private speech development (private speech internalisation) is important for mathematical development and subject to disabling. The main concern of the present study was whether or not the two phonological memory factors evaluated in the study (i.e. the results of children's digit span assessments, both forward and backward) relates to private speech internalisation and whether this relationship changes with children's age, or mathematical achievement levels, or both. We made comparisons between children with acknowledged mathematical dif

A twin-case study of developmental number sense impairment.

The current study reports on 9-year-old monozygotic twin girls who fail to make any progress in learning basic mathematics in primary education. We tested the hypothesis that the twins' core maths problems were deficits in number sense that manifested as impairments in approximate and small number systems, resulting in impairment in nonsymbolic as well as in symbolic processing. While age-matched controls (eight typically developing girls) scored highly, the twins scored at chance on all number sense tasks. More specifically, on a nonsymbolic comparison task, even in the simplest ratio conditi

Clock reading: an underestimated topic in children with mathematics difficulties.

Recent studies have shown that children with mathematics difficulties (MD) have weaknesses in multiple areas of mathematics. Andersson, for example, recently found that children with MD perform significantly worse than other children on clock reading tasks. The present study builds on this recent finding and aims at a more profound understanding of the difficulties that children with MD experience with telling time. Therefore, clock reading abilities of 154 children with MD were compared to the abilities of 571 average achieving children, and a qualitative error analysis was performed. The res

Stable Sparse Classifiers Identify qEEG Signatures that Predict Learning Disabilities (NOS) Severity.

In this paper, we present a novel methodology to solve the classification problem, based on sparse (data-driven) regressions, combined with techniques for ensuring stability, especially useful for high-dimensional datasets and small samples number. The sensitivity and specificity of the classifiers are assessed by a stable ROC procedure, which uses a non-parametric algorithm for estimating the area under the ROC curve. This method allows assessing the performance of the classification by the ROC technique, when more than two groups are involved in the classification problem, i.e., when the gol

[Psychopathology in children with dyspraxia].

The term "dyspraxia" was coined by Julian de Ajuriaguerra and Mira Stambak in 1964. This clinical term was treated very differently according to which explanatory model was adopted. Nowadays, it is used to refer to developmental coordination disorder in view of its neuro-developmental origin. In any case, the actual clinical situations vary and are often complex. In our opinion, it is first necessary to examine the differential diagnosis: apraxia in children caused by lesions, dysgraphia, simply delayed motor development, non-verbal learning disability syndrome, hemispheric specialisation defi

Early Reading and Math Developmental Trajectories: Examining Influences of Specific Learning Disabilities and Socioeconomic Status.

This study examined the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and specific learning disability (SLD) on reading and math developmental trajectories from kindergarten through fifth grade in the U.S. Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten class:2011 dataset. Using a retrospective classification based on SLD status at the end of fifth grade, we compared reading and math skills at school entry and growth over time between children with SLD (N = 540) and their peers without disabilities (N = 8,650). Although most children with SLD were not identified until third grade or later, this group

Executive function in children with signs of specific learning disorders.

This study aimed to compare the executive functions (EFs) of children with decoding, reading comprehension, spelling, and calculation deficits to those of typically developing (TD) children, to delineate specific EF profiles for each group. From an initial sample of 932 children, aged 7-13 years, 93 children with deficits in learning tasks that resemble those of Specific Learning Disorders (signs of Specific Learning Disorders, sSLD) and 28 TD children were studied. EFs were assessed through both performance-based tests and questionnaires completed by parents and teachers, on which ANOVAs, cor

IQ of four-year-olds who go on to develop dyslexia.

Do children who go on to develop dyslexia show normal verbal and nonverbal development before reading onset? According to the aptitude-achievement discrepancy model, dyslexia is defined as a discrepancy between intelligence and reading achievement. One of the underlying assumptions is that the general cognitive development of children who fail to learn to read has been normal. The current study tests this assumption. In addition, we investigated whether possible IQ deficits are uniquely related to later reading or are also related to arithmetic. Four-year-olds (N = 212) with and without famili

Left and right corticobasal syndrome: comparison of cognitive profiles between metabolic imaging - matched groups.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is typically asymmetric. Case reports suggest that left-hemisphere CBS (lhCBS) is associated with major language impairment, and right-hemisphere CBS (rhCBS) is associated with major visuospatial deficits, but no group study has ever verified these observations. In our study, we enrolled 49 patients with CBS, classified them as lhCBS or rhCBS based on asymmetry of hypometabolism on brain FDG-PET and compared their cognitive and behavioural profiles. METHODS: We defined asymmetry of hypometabolism upon visual inspection of qualitative PET images and conf
