In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in low and middle income countries. However, there is limited research in these countries showing the prevalence and determinants of obesity. In this study, we examine the socioeconomic inequalities in obesity among South African adults. We use nationally representative data from the South Africa National Income Dynamic Survey of 2008 to: (1) construct an asset index using multiple correspondence analyses (MCA) as a proxy for socioeconomic status; (2) estimate concentration indices (CI) to measure socioeconomic inequalities in obes

BACKGROUND: The association between economic insecurity and mental health among low-income pregnant people is understudied. We examined the relationship between economic insecurity and perinatal stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among a low-income, racially/ethnically diverse study population, and differentiated associations by nativity status.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the EMBRACE Study that enrolled Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid program) eligible pregnant people in the Central Valley region of California. Economic insecurity was assessed through measures of food in

This qualitative study examines older adults' alcohol and other drug addiction and service effectiveness from the perspectives of 30 social workers grounded in intersectionality. Findings indicate that while loneliness and social environment contribute to addiction, common outcomes include bio-psycho-social, economic, and familial impacts. Intersectional factors, including gender, class, education, marital status, parenthood, social capital, and criminal involvement, differentiate these experiences. Women experience greater stigma and reduced access to services, while class and education influ

This study examined socioeconomic differences in risk behaviours according to youth-oriented measures of economic resources. Using a representative sample of Swedish adolescents (n = 3,939, 51% females), the associations that youth's own economy shared with smoking, drinking and conduct problems were examined. Data was based on population register and self-report information when participants were in grades 8 (T1 aged 14-15) and 9 (T2 aged 15-16). Missing activities due to financial constraints and having a cash margin were each positively associated with concurrent risk behaviours. However, l

We estimate a gender differential in the intergenerational transmission of adverse birth outcomes. We link Taiwan birth certificates from 1978 to 2006 to create a sample of children born in the period 1999-2006 that includes information about their parents and their maternal grandmothers. We use maternal-sibling fixed effects to control for unobserved family-linked factors that may be correlated with birth outcomes across generations, and define adverse birth outcomes as small for gestational age. We find that when a mother is in the 5th percentile of birth weight for her gestational age, then

This paper aims to identify key factors influencing elder abuse within the family and to further explore the heterogeneity of these factors across different types of elder abuse. The data were drawn from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey and the final valid sample was 10,703. A random forest classifier, a supervised machine learning method, was employed to identify the key influencing factors of elder abuse. Children's economic status is found to be the most important factor in predicting elder abuse, followed by the number of children, the health status of older people, intergenerati

The WHO aims to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem by 2030. However, standard morbidity measures poorly correlate to infection intensities, hindering disease monitoring and evaluation. This is exacerbated by insufficient evidence on Schistosoma's impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We conducted community-based cross-sectional surveys and parasitological examinations in moderate-to-high Schistosoma mansoni endemic communities in Uganda. We calculated parasitic infections and used EQ-5D instruments to estimate and compare HRQoL utilities in these populations. We f

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of socio-economic variables on treatment selection and survival of patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).
METHODS: Using information available in population-based Swedish registries, we evaluated indices of health, education and economy from the 980 patients in the Swedish CML register diagnosed between 2002 and 2012. Apart from internal comparisons, five age-, gender- and region-matched control subjects per patient served as control cohort. Median follow-up time from CML diagnosis was 4.8 years.
RESULTS: Among patients with CML, low personal or hou

OBJECTIVES: To assess the importance of multiple chronic diseases (co-morbidities) to how people feel about their lives generally. To do this, we studied the associations between co-morbidities and indicators of quality of life and/or psychological distress.
METHODS: Analysis of unit record cross-sectional data from Australian national surveys for the population aged 20 years or more. Identification of an appropriate indicator of multiple chronic diseases (i.e. co-morbidities). Use of logistic regression techniques to study associations between: (1) co-morbidities and demographic, socio-econo

Severe congenital neutropenia is a rare disorder. The survival and quality of life of patients radically improved through infection prevention, use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and the appropriate use of antibiotics during infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the precautions taken by families to prevent infections, the level of knowledge regarding the disease, and the impact of external factors such as education and economic status on behavior and compliance in patients and caregivers in terms of the following treatment protocols. Questionnaires were designed with the

OBJECTIVES: We assessed global inequality in eye health by using data on the global burden of disease measured in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
METHODS: We estimated the burden of eye disease by calculating the sum of DALYs (from the Global Burden of Disease study, 2004 update) due to trachoma, vitamin A deficiency, glaucoma, cataract, refractive errors, and macular degeneration. We assessed the geographic distribution of eye disease in relation to economic status and etiology by calculating the Gini coefficient, the Theil index, and the Atkinson index.
RESULTS: The global burden o

Researchers have demonstrated that Black women exhibit a disproportionate risk of ill health. We examined the relationship between psychosocial factors, including economic status, race-based social inequality, gender-based violence, and the health status of 323 Black women between the ages of 18 and 65. Black women from a community sample completed a health survey with open-ended responses. Results indicated that women in lower economic groups are more likely to be treated for allergies (p = < .05) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID; p = < .01). Women who experienced increased incidents of r

The hypothesis that social indices and educational level of mother are potential sources of childhood malnutrition was tested in Kampumbu, Zambia. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, protein and albumin levels in children were studied in relation to malnutrition. Six hundred and fifty rural children (306 males and 344 females) aged one and fourteen years exposed to various types of diet and environmental factors were selected randomly. Data on economic status, diet environment and educational attainment as well as other demographic information were collected. The major epidemiological findings were that t

BACKGROUND: In a country with limited and unequally distributed resources, and plagued with malaria annually, under-five children are severely affected by this disease in Ghana. While the epidemiological burden of malaria on under-five children is well-documented, the extent and contributors of socio-economic inequalities in malaria prevalence remain under-explored. This study examined the intertemporal socioeconomic status (SES)-related inequalities in malaria prevalence among under-five children in Ghana from 2016 to 2019 and identified the key factors contributing to these disparities.

Chronic diseases constitute a tremendous public health burden globally. Poor nutrition, inactive lifestyles, and obesity are established independent risk factors for chronic diseases. Public health decision-makers are in desperate need of effective and cost-effective programs that prevent chronic diseases. To date, most economic evaluations consider the effect of these programs on body weight, without considering their effects on other risk factors (nutrition and physical activity). We propose an economic evaluation approach that considers program effects on multiple risk factors rather than o
