[Chemicals toxic to the olfactory system. Analysis and description].

AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM: Occupational exposure to chemical products can have toxic effects on the olfactory system. An important number of patients have experienced olfactory disorders subsequent to the development of the chemical industry and atmospheric pollution. EPIDEMIOLOGY DATA: Straightforward data are difficult to collect because several cofactors other than the toxic product are involved. Two lists of toxic products can be made. The first list includes products for which scientific data is available and the second products for which data is lacking. Olfactory tests also differ between au

Animal Models for Long COVID: Current Advances, Limitations, and Future Directions.

Long COVID (LC) represents a chronic, systemic, and often disabling condition that poses a significant ongoing threat to public health. Foundational scientific studies are needed to unravel the underlying mechanisms, with the ultimate goal of developing effective preventative and therapeutic strategies. Therefore, there is an urgent demand for animal models that can accurately replicate the clinical features of LC. This review integrates clinical epidemiological data to summarize the pathological changes in extrapulmonary systems involved in LC. Additionally, it critically examines the capacit

Chronic Kidney Disease and Coronary Artery Disease: JACC State-of-the-Art Review.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). As well as their high prevalence of traditional CAD risk factors, such as diabetes and hypertension, persons with CKD are also exposed to other nontraditional, uremia-related cardiovascular disease risk factors, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and abnormal calcium-phosphorus metabolism. CKD and end-stage kidney disease not only increase the risk of CAD, but they also modify its clinical presentation and cardinal symptoms. Management of CAD is complicated in CKD patients, due to their likelihood of

Calcifediol - more than the stepchild of CKD-MBD therapy?

In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), 25OH-vitamin D (calcidiol) deficiency or insufficiency is a common finding with high prevalence. Numerous epidemiological studies have found an independent association of low levels of calcidiol with increased morbidity and mortality. Within different patient cohorts, application of cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol (native vitamin D) as well as calcifediol can help replenish vitamin D levels in patients with and without renal disease. However, it is unclear if such an approach is effective in modifying relevant

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: brains, bones and breeding.

Recent research has modified both the conceptualization and treatment of eating disorders. New diagnostic criteria reducing the "not otherwise specified" category should facilitate the early recognition and treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Technology-based studies identify AN and BN as "brain circuit" disorders; epidemiologic studies reveal that the narrow racial, ethnic and income profile of individuals no longer holds true for AN. The major organs affected long term-the brain and skeletal system-both respond to improved nutrition, with maintenance of body weight t

Update on the Epidemiology of Melanoma.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) has been increasing steadily in incidence over the past 30 years. Recent studies have explored associations between CMM and varying physiologic risk factors, such as nevi or hair and eye color, in addition to historical features such as a personal history of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), childhood cancers, Parkinson's Disease, hormone exposure and family history of CMM. Genome-wide association studies have also uncovered many genetic determinants of CMM risk. Ultimately, ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure remains the most important modifiable risk factor f

Effects of immune system diversity and physical variation of immunotypic mixing on the dynamics of rabies in bats.

The ecology and life history of rabies viruses in bats suggest a need for an integrated modelling treatment that extends beyond traditional epidemiological approaches. We modify our adaptive modelling approach to investigate the effects of immune system structure and immunological mixing events on the disease profile of the bat colony and subsequently on the dynamics of rabies viruses in bats. Our theoretical framework, which is based on individual (intra-host) models of the response of the host to a viral challenge and virus-specific disease mechanisms, integrates the individual components to

Effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on gonad development: Mechanistic insights from fish and mammals.

Over the past century, evidence has emerged that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have an impact on reproductive health. An increased frequency of reproductive disorders has been observed worldwide in both wildlife and humans that is correlated with accidental exposures to EDCs and their increased production. Epidemiological and experimental studies have highlighted the consequences of early exposures and the existence of key windows of sensitivity during development. Such early in life exposures can have an immediate impact on gonadal and reproductive tract development, as well as on lon

The pharmacological management of patients with comorbid psoriasis and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is increasingly being recognized as a complex disorder affecting multiple systems. Systemic inflammation is considered the pathogenic link between psoriasis and its comorbid conditions that include arthritis, metabolic disorders, depression, and cardiovascular diseases. The presence of comorbid conditions modifies both its clinical management and the therapeutic approach in psoriatic patients. AREAS COVERED: This review describes the clinical, epidemiological, and pathogenic link between psoriasis and obesity. Furthermore, da

Obesity and Colorectal Cancer.

There is strong evidence that modifiable lifestyle factors such as obesity play a key role in colorectal carcinogenesis. Epidemiologic data have consistently reported a positive association between obesity and colorectal cancer. The relative risk associated with general obesity (as assessed by BMI) is higher in men than in women and for cancer of the colon than for cancer of the rectum. Abdominal obesity (as assessed by waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-hip ratio) is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer in both sexes, with stronger associations for cancer of the colon than

Psychiatric disorders as vulnerability factors for nicotine addiction: what have we learned from animal models?

Epidemiological studies indicate a high prevalence of tobacco smoking in subjects with psychiatric disorders. Notably, there is a high prevalence of smoking among those with dependence to other substances, schizophrenia, mood, or anxiety disorders. It has been difficult to understand how these phenomena interact with clinical populations as it is unclear what preceded what in most of the studies. These comorbidities may be best understood by using experimental approaches in well-controlled conditions. Notably, animal models represent advantageous approaches as the parameters under study can be

Self-evaluated health status and beer drinking behaviour among South Africans.

A two stage instrumental variables probit model that postulates a simultaneous relationship between an individual's perceived health status and whether or not to drink beer is estimated using data from the South African National Household Survey of Health Inequalities. The results show a statistically significant negative relationship between individual decision to drink beer and health status. Thus, any policies geared at boosting perceived health status are likely to reduce the prevalence of beer drinking. Similarly, any policy interventions that are effective in discouraging beer drinking w

Short- and long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and greenness in relation to pulmonary tuberculosis incidence.

Epidemiological studies have found inconsistent relationships between air pollutants and the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), possibly due to variations in exposure windows and limited attention to environmental modifiers such as greenness. However, few studies has systematically examined how short- and long-term exposure to air pollution may differentially impact PTB risk, and how greenness may modify these associations. We utilized comprehensive data, including daily PTB incidence, air pollutants, meteorological data, and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from Zhejiang P

Incidence trends and projections of lip and oral cavity cancer in China 1990-2021: an age-period-cohort and decomposition analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the historical trends, underlying causes, and future projections of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) incidence in China. METHODS: Annual cases and age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) for LOCC in China from 1990 to 2021 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models were employed to assess the effects of age, period, and cohort. Bayesian APC models were applied to project future incidence trends, and decomposition analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing incidence. RESULT: From 1990 to 2021, the ca

The role of physical activity in breast cancer etiology.

Considerable research interest has been given in the past 25 years to examining the role of physical activity in breast cancer prevention given the scarcity of modifiable risk factors for this major cause of cancer incidence and mortality in women. A review of the observational epidemiologic evidence and recent randomized exercise intervention trials on the association between physical activity and breast cancer risk is presented. As of March 2010, 73 separate studies out of 91 publications worldwide were identified as having sufficient data for this review. Across these 73 studies, the averag

Triglyceride-Rich Lipoproteins and ASCVD: Evidence for Causality and Challenges in Therapeutic Translation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current evidence linking triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) with emphasis on challenges in translating the epidemiological- and genetic epidemiological findings into therapeutic risk reduction. RECENT FINDINGS: Elevated triglycerides and TRL-cholesterol are consistently associated with ASCVD risk in both primary- and secondary-prevention populations. Human genetic studies of pathways involving LPL, APOC3, ANGPTL3, and ANGPTL4 strongly support a causal role for TRL metabolism in atherosclerosis. The
