OBJECTIVE: Previous trials show that selenium could be a very useful tool in the control and treatment of autoimmune thyroid diseases. In this cross-sectional study, through a survey, we aim to evaluate Portuguese endocrinologists' perception and pattern of prescription of selenium supplements in these diseases and verify its agreement with current guidelines.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an inflammatory autoimmune condition now recognized as being associated not only with Graves hyperthyroidism but also with euthyroidism and hypothyroidism. A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose TED and to recognize sight-threatening disease. Care is best provided in a multidisciplinary setting among primary care clinicians, endocrinologists, and ophthalmologists. This review summarizes the pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and activity and severity evaluation of TED as well as the most recent advances in its treatment.

Hyperhidrosis is an under-reported and under-treated condition that causes significant patient morbidity. Secondary causes require consideration, but the vast majority of cases are idiopathic. The condition is encountered by a range of clinicians, including neurologists, dermatologists and endocrinologists, and it pays to be familiar with the range of highly effective treatment options available for the treatment of both focal and generalised sweating disorders. We outline the treatment options and therapeutic approach to the most common hyperhidrosis phenotypes, with illustrative cases.

Practicing endocrinologists are likely to confront 2 major issues that occur with dyslipidemias during pregnancy. The most dramatic is the development of severe hypertriglyceridemia leading to acute pancreatitis. The second is the approach to treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia, a common genetic disorder. Acanthosis nigricans is a physical finding of the skin that appears to be a marker for insulin resistance. Because of the association of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, acanthosis nigricans may also be a marker for type 2 diabetes. Some states have recommended statewide screening for acanthosis nigricans. However, this has led to a large referral of children to pediatric endocrinologists.
