Lupus enteritis: A rare masquerade of intestinal tuberculosis.

Lupus enteritis is a rare clinical entity with a global incidence of 0.2%-14.2%. Signs and symptoms of lupus enteritis are nonspecific, and incidence is very low; it is often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis (TB) in endemic countries like India. Also, enteritis as initial presentation is quite uncommon in systemic lupus erythematosus. We are reporting a case of a 15-year-old woman of lupus enteritis who was misdiagnosed as intestinal TB.

Imaging diagnosis of cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to summarize the intestinal ultrasound (IUS) and computed tomography enterography (CTE) features of cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) and compare the performance of IUS and CTE in the evaluation of CMUSE in a single tertiary center. METHODS: Clinically or pathologically confirmed CMUSE patients between December 2009 and April 2023 were recruited. Imaging features of CMUSE patients who underwent both IUS and CTE were summarized retrospectively. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients were included. All patients were found to have ileum involvement,

Severe lupus enteritis: A diagnostic and therapeutic enigma.

Lupus enteritis refers to the gastrointestinal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It presents with diverse symptoms that frequently overlap with those of other acute abdominal conditions, posing diagnostic challenges. We describe an adolescent female, with lupus pancreatitis and nephritis, who later developed severe lupus enteritis during the course of her illness. She was treated with pulse methylprednisolone and intravenous cyclophosphamide and gradually improved over 3 weeks. Our case highlights the need to consider lupus enteritis in patients with severe pain abdomen and in

Tapeworm Infection Diagnosed after Campylobacter jejuni-induced Enteritis.

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. A polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the tapeworm excreted in this case was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis. This report presents a rare case of coinfection with Diphyllob

Advancements in understanding bacterial enteritis pathogenesis through organoids.

Bacterial enteritis has a substantial role in contributing to a large portion of the global disease burden and serves as a major cause of newborn mortality. Despite advancements gained from current animal and cell models in improving our understanding of pathogens, their widespread application is hindered by apparent drawbacks. Therefore, more precise models are imperatively required to develop more accurate studies on host-pathogen interactions and drug discovery. Since the emergence of intestinal organoids, massive studies utilizing organoids have been conducted to study the pathogenesis of

Cryptosporidium-associated enteritis in captive koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Cryptosporidium spp. sporadically infect a range of Australian native mammals including koalas, red kangaroos, eastern grey kangaroos, bilbies and brush tailed possums and can range from asymptomatic to fatal infections. Traditionally considered a disease of the young or immuno-compromised, and resulting in profuse diarrhoea in other species, here we report an atypical clinical syndrome associated with Cryptosporidium in a captive population of koalas. All affected animals were in-contact adults, and demonstrated anorexia, dehydration and abdominal pain in the absence of diarrhoea. Following e

Recurrent Lupus Enteritis While on Chronic Immunosuppressant Therapy.

Lupus enteritis is a poorly studied cause of abdominal pain in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We present the case of a 28-year-old female with a history of SLE for nine years. She has been on chronic immunosuppressant therapy for the last nine years due to an episode of lupus enteritis in the past. Currently, the patient presented to urgent care with a three-day history of waxing and waning symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition, the patient had skin rashes. Laboratory work was significant for leukopenia, hypocomplementemia, hematuria, and proteinuri

[Four Cases of Surgical Treatment for Radiation Enteritis].

Although radiation therapy for pelvic cancer leads to improved outcomes, it may cause radiation enteritis. Radiation enteritis is classified as early and late reaction. Late reaction indicate progressive and irreversible changes caused by ischemic changes of the intestinal mucosa. Severe cases require a surgical treatment, which is challenging because of severe adhesions and a high risk of suture failure. In addition, the postoperative course may be unfavorable in some cases. We performed surgery for 4 radiation enteritis cases; however, the postoperative course was unfavorable in 2 cases beca

Lupus Enteritis: An Uncommon Presentation of Lupus Flare.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but are usually attributable to medication side effects, infections, or other underlying conditions. In rare cases, they are caused by the autoimmune process itself. In this report, we present two cases of lupus enteritis as the sole manifestation of lupus flare. We also provide a comprehensive review of available literature on this topic with a specific focus on clinical symptoms, complications, laboratory findings, histology, imaging findings, and therapies. Lupus enteritis is an uncommon manifestation of SLE. CT

Duck virus enteritis (duck plague) - a comprehensive update.

Duck virus enteritis (DVE), also called duck plague, is one of the major contagious and fatal diseases of ducks, geese and swan. It is caused by duck enteritis virus (DEV)/Anatid herpesvirus-1 of the genus Mardivirus, family Herpesviridae, and subfamily Alpha-herpesvirinae. Of note, DVE has worldwide distribution, wherein migratory waterfowl plays a crucial role in its transmission within and between continents. Furthermore, horizontal and/ or vertical transmission plays a significant role in disease spread through oral-fecal discharges. Either of sexes from varying age groups of ducks is vuln

Tuberculous Enteritis: A Rare Complication of Miliary Tuberculosis.

Tuberculous enteritis is a clinical rarity even in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of miliary tuberculosis with gastrointestinal involvement. A 47-year-old homosexual male from Philippines with no significant medical history presented with productive cough, night sweats, subjective fevers, shortness of breath, watery diarrhea, and 25-pound weight loss in past one year. On physical exam he was afebrile, mildly hypotensive, tachycardic, and tachypneic, but saturating well on room air. He was cachectic with oral thrush and bilateral fine rales. Chest X-ray revealed a miliary pattern

Lupus enteritis during pregnancy: A case-based review.

Although the symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) worsen during pregnancy, few previous studies have reported lupus enteritis in pregnant women with SLE. A 29-year-old pregnant Japanese woman presented with acute abdomen. Six years before pain onset, she developed pure red cell aplasia and tested positive for anti-Ro (SS-A) and anti-La (SS-B) antibodies. Anti-DNA antibodies were detected two and a half years later. The patient remained asymptomatic until she developed acute abdomen. A mild increase in anti-DNA antibody levels and a mild decrease in complement levels were observed, an

Case of acute pancreatitis associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

A 25-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaints of right flank pain, watery diarrhea, and fever. Blood tests revealed high levels of inflammatory markers, and infectious enteritis was diagnosed. A stool culture obtained on admission revealed no growth of any significant pathogens. Conservative therapy was undertaken with fasting and fluid replacement. On day 2 of admission, the fever resolved, the frequency of defecation reduced, the right flank pain began to subside, and the white blood cell count started to decrease. On hospital day 4, the frequency of diarrhea decreased to approxim

[Acute abdomen caused by eosinophilic enteritis: six observations].

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic enteritis is a rather rare condition characterized by infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract by eosinophils; as a casue of acute abdomen it is really exceptional. The etiology is unclear and its description in the literature is sparse, but associations have been made with collagen vascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergy and parasitic infections as it was confirmed in one of our pathologic studies. CLINICAL CASES: From 1997 to 2011 six cases of eosinophilic enteritis that involved a small bowel segment were diagnosed. A partial resection by an ir
