Event-related brain potentials dissociate visual working memory processes under categorial and identical comparison conditions.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been successfully employed to examine the functional and neuronal characteristics of working memory processes. In the present study, we examined the ERP waveforms in a delayed matching task to examine the cognitive processes underlying category and identity comparison and the effects of stimulus complexity. Subjects had to decide whether two visual stimuli are (a) physically identical (identical comparison condition, IC) or (b) identical, irrespective of their orientation (categorial comparison condition, CC). The stimuli were structured five-point patterns

Delayed visual P3 in unilateral thalamic stroke.

The P3 potential is accepted as a neurophysiological correlate of memory and attention. Delayed latencies were reported in different forms of dementias. Although the generator sites are still under debate, the thalamus may play a crucial role. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of an unilateral thalamic ischaemic infarction on P3 generation. The event-related P3 component of six patients (2 male, four female; mean age 47 years, range 22-63 years) with unilateral thalamic ischaemic infarction was studied and compared to age-matched controls (five male, nine female; mean age

Violation of rhythmic expectancies can elicit late frontal gamma activity nested in theta oscillations.

Rhythm processing involves building expectations according to the hierarchical temporal structure of auditory events. Although rhythm processing has been addressed in the context of predictive coding, the properties of the oscillatory response in different cortical areas are still not clear. We explored the oscillatory properties of the neural response to rhythmic incongruence and the cross-frequency coupling between multiple frequencies to further investigate the mechanisms underlying rhythm perception. We designed an experiment to investigate the neural response to rhythmic deviations in whi

Moving beyond belief: A narrative review of potential biomarkers for transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive neurostimulation technique that is currently being tested as a potential treatment for a myriad of neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, the working mechanisms underlying tVNS are poorly understood and it remains unclear whether stimulation activates the vagus nerve for every participant. Finding a biological marker of tVNS is imperative, as it can help guide research on clinical applications and can inform researchers on optimal stimulation sites and parameters to further optimize treatment efficacy. In this narrative

Considering ERP difference scores as individual difference measures: Issues with subtraction and alternative approaches.

There is growing interest in psychophysiological and neural correlates of psychopathology, personality, and other individual differences. Many studies correlate a criterion individual difference variable (e.g., anxiety) with a psychophysiological measurement derived by subtracting scores taken from two within-subject conditions. These subtraction-based difference scores are intended to increase specificity by isolating variability of interest. Using data on the error-related negativity (ERN) and correct response negativity (CRN) in relation to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), we highlight s

Perception and bias in the processing of compound versus phrasal stress: evidence from event-related brain potentials.

Previous research using picture/word matching tasks has demonstrated a tendency to incorrectly interpret phrasally stressed strings as compounds. Using event-related potentials, we sought to determine whether this pattern stems from poor perceptual sensitivity to the compound/phrasal stress distinction, or from a post-perceptual bias in behavioral response selection. A secondary aim was to gain insight into the role played by contrastive stress patterns in online sentence comprehension. The behavioral results replicated previous findings of a preference for compounds, but the electrophysiologi

Low cost electroencephalographic acquisition amplifier to serve as teaching and research tool.

We described the development and testing of a low cost, easily constructed electroencephalographic (EEG) acquisition amplifier for noninvasive Brain Computer Interface (BCI) education and research. The acquisition amplifier was constructed from newly available off-the-shelf integrated circuit components, and readily sends a 24-bit data stream via USB (Universal Serial Bus) to a computer platform. We demonstrate here the hardware's use in the analysis of a visually evoked P300 paradigm for a choose one-of-eight task. This clearly shows the applicability of this system as a low cost teaching and

Auditory P300 amplitude as a state marker for positive symptoms in schizophrenia: cross-sectional and retrospective longitudinal studies.

The amplitude of the P300 component of the auditory event-related brain potential (ERP) is consistently reduced in schizophrenia. To determine whether this P300 abnormality can be used as a state marker to reflect the severity of symptoms, we examined both cross-sectionally and longitudinally the relationship between auditory P300 amplitude and symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia. For the cross-sectional study, ERP was elicited by an auditory oddball paradigm, and symptom severity was quantitatively measured by means of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale in 93 patients with s

Auditory event-related potentials during target detection are abnormal in mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: To define brain activity and behavioral changes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an isolated memory deficit in the elderly that is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: Brain potentials and reaction time were examined in elderly controls (n=12) and MCI (n=15) using a target detection paradigm. Subjects listened to a sequence of tones and responded to high-pitched target tones (P=0.20) that were randomly mixed with low-pitched tones (P=0.80). Measures were a pre-stimulus readiness potential (RP), post-stimulus potentials (P50, N100, P200, N200, P300), and reaction

Alcohol's effects on decision making and cognitive processing in a reward uncertainty task.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol impairs judgment, often increasing risk-taking behaviors such as reckless driving and gambling, which can result in severe consequences. However, laboratory studies have inconsistently observed alcohol-induced risk taking, raising questions about the specific contexts in which these effects emerge. This study investigated alcohol's impact on decision making within a reward uncertainty framework. METHOD: Participants were given a moderate dose of alcoholic (N = 40), placebo (N = 40), or a nonalcoholic drink (N = 42) before completing a validated Reward Uncertainty Task in wh

P300 Wave Alterations and Cognitive Impairment in Cerebellum Lesions.

Patients with cognitive deficits have a prolonged latency and reduced amplitude of the P300 wave. However, no study has correlated P300 wave alterations with the cognitive performance of patients with cerebellar lesions. We aimed to determine if the cognitive status of these patients was associated with P300 wave alterations. We recruited 30 patients with cerebellar lesions from the wards of the N.R.S. Medical College, Kolkata, in West Bengal (India). The Kolkata Cognitive Screening Battery tasks and the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) were used to assess the cognitive status and the Internat

Reward processing in gain versus loss context: An ERP study.

Previous research has shown that consummatory ERP components are sensitive to contextual valence. The present study investigated the contextual valence effect across anticipatory and consummatory phases by requiring participants to play a simple gambling task during a gain context and a loss context. During the anticipatory phase, the cue-P3 was more positive in the gain context compared to the loss context, whereas the stimulus-preceding negativity (SPN) was comparable across the two contexts. With respect to the consummatory phase, the feedback-related negativity (FRN) in response to the zer

A miss is as good as a mile? Processing of near and full outcomes in a gambling paradigm.

Studies investigating the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and the P300 following near misses, full misses, and wins have yielded inconsistent results. Furthermore, the P300 results were likely confounded by an oddball effect due to the probabilities of the different outcomes. We introduced a fourth outcome (narrow win), which allows for balanced outcome probabilities and thus rules out potential oddball effects. We measured the FRN and P300 as well as subjective ratings while participants were gambling on a wheel of fortune. The FRN was larger following misses compared to wins and larger fol

Cognitive slowing in cognitive-motor disorder associated to type 1 human immunodeficiency virus: TR and P300.

INTRODUCTION: Reaction time (RT) deficit exhibited by HIV-1 asymptomatic seropositive individuals cannot always be explained by the effect of a cognitive slowing single factor. Evidence exists that decisional and peripheral components of RT may have differential slowing. OBJECTIVES: To assess the hypothesis of a cognitive slowing single factor as the main responsible for RT slowing in these subjects. METHODOLOGY: Thirty two (32) HIV-1 neurologically asymptomatic seropositive individuals were compared to 29 seronegative controls in two discriminative reaction time tasks (DRT) having increased

Vitamin B-12 Supplementation during Pregnancy and Early Lactation Does Not Affect Neurophysiologic Outcomes in Children Aged 6 Years.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of vitamin B-12 is common in pregnant Indian women. Assessment of neurophysiological measures using event-related potentials (ERPs) may yield additional information on the effects of maternal B-12 supplementation on child brain function. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin B-12 supplementation (50 μg daily orally) during pregnancy on the childhood ERP measures of positive waveform ∼300 ms after stimulus (P300) and mismatch negativity. METHODS: This study was a follow-up of children born to pregnant women who received oral vitam

Survival processing modulates the neurocognitive mechanisms of episodic encoding.

Memories formed in the context of an imagined survival scenario are more easily remembered, but the mechanisms underlying this effect are still under debate. We investigated the neurocognitive processes underlying the survival processing effect by examining event-related potentials (ERPs) during memory encoding. Participants imagined being either stranded in a foreign land and needing to survive, or in an overseas moving (control) scenario, while incidentally encoding a list of words. Words encountered in the survival context were associated with improved recall and reduced false-memory intrus

Differential effects of instructed and objective feedback reliability on feedback-related brain activity.

Feedback reliability refers to the probability that the same decision leads to the same positive or negative feedback in the future. Previous research has shown that unreliable feedback is associated with attenuated feedback-related brain activity in ERPs, represented by a reduced fronto-central valence effect (feedback-related negativity or reward positivity) and a reduced feedback-related P3. Here, we asked whether these effects reflect top-down mechanisms or whether they can be explained by implicit feedback-outcome contingency learning. In two experiments, participants performed a trial-an
