Detection of risk levels in optical mark recognition exams using categorical feature-based machine learning models.

Today, the evaluation of large-scale examinations is mostly carried out using optical marking systems. Although these systems provide fast and accurate scoring, they often overlook behavioral patterns on answer sheets. Features such as blank responses, double markings, repetitive patterns, and response diversity can support a more comprehensive assessment of exam security and student behavior. This study aims to predict students' risk levels from optical marking data using machine learning. The target variable consists of expert-defined five-level risk labels. Since all features were categoric

Event-Driven Sentinel-Expert Neuromorphic Vision Enabled by Polarization-Reconfigurable Organic Ferroelectric Phototransistors.

In the era of the Internet of Things and edge intelligence, conventional always-on machine vision systems suffer from severe energy bottlenecks because they continuously process massively redundant spatiotemporal data. Inspired by the dual-pathway strategy of the human retina, we propose a bioinspired "Sentinel-Expert" synergetic vision system enabled by polarization-reconfigurable organic ferroelectric phototransistors based on P(VDF-TrFE). By manipulating the ferroelectric polarization states, a single device is reconfigured into three functional modes: (i) a magnocellular pathway-inspired S

Assistive technology: simulation-based evaluation of a smart portable toilet to enhance personal control among individuals with autism and disabilities.

Toileting is a fundamental activity of daily living that presents significant challenges in bed-based care, particularly for individuals with mobility limitations and neurodevelopmental or intellectual disabilities. Despite its importance, assistive toileting has received limited attention at early design and feasibility stages. This study evaluates the technical feasibility of a bed-deployable, plumbing-independent automated toileting concept using simulation-based methods and structured expert appraisal. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including computer-aided design (CAD), quasistati

Validation of a novel algorithm for quantification of the percentage of signal fractionation in atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: Catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is rapidly becoming a standard practice. There is literature to support that catheter ablation of persistent AF requires additional 'substrate modification'. In clinical practice, operators rely on automated fractionation maps created by three-dimensional anatomic mapping systems to rapidly assess complex 'fractionated' signals (CFAE). These systems use differing algorithms to automate the process. The agreement between operators and contemporary algorithms has not been examined. We sought to assess the agreement between operators

Objective skill assessment for cataract surgery from surgical microscope video.

OBJECTIVE: Video offers an accessible method for automated surgical skill evaluation; however, many platforms still rely on traditional six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) tracking systems, which can be costly, cumbersome, and challenging to apply clinically. This study aims to demonstrate that trainee skill in cataract surgery can be assessed effectively using only object detection from monocular surgical microscope video. METHODS: One ophthalmologist and four residents performed cataract surgery on a simulated eye five times each, generating 25 recordings. Recordings included both the surgical mi

Computer-aided diagnosis in rheumatic diseases using ultrasound: an overview.

Clinical evaluation of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases through images is a challenge for the beginner rheumatologist since image diagnosis is an expert task with a long learning curve. The aim of this work was to present a narrative review on the main ultrasound computer-aided diagnosis systems that may help clinicians thanks to the progress made in the application of artificial intelligence techniques. We performed a literature review searching for original articles in seven repositories, from 1970 to 2019, and identified 11 main methods currently used in ultrasound computer-aided diag

Comparison of methods for detecting keratoconus using videokeratography.

BACKGROUND: The detection of keratoconus patterns on videokeratography is important for screening candidates for refractive surgery and for studying the genetic basis of keratoconus. OBJECTIVE: We compared three quantitative approaches to identifying keratoconus from videokeratographic information to examine the limitations and capabilities of each test and to determine their suitability for use in the clinical setting. METHODS: Videokeratographs typical of clinically diagnosed keratoconus (n = 44) and of various non-keratoconus conditions (n = 132, including normal, with-the-rule astigmatis

Setting up a decision support system with decision tables.

The aim of our study was to develop a decision support system using a conventional method which can be used as a shell for different applications. So it was necessary to find a method which allows separation of decision principles and decision algorithms. In addition, documentation of the patient records should be simplified. This could be attained by using the decision table technique and the programming language MUMPS. The general system developed was applied to the therapy decision for patients with liver metastases. The application system was clinically evaluated in a randomized group of p

Including other system in E-Care telemonitoring platform.

Nowadays, telemonitoring systems are increasingly used, due to the increasing of life expectancy and chronic diseases. Indeed, chronic diseases and disabilities due to advancing age are responsible for health care costs increasingly growing. Telemonitoring systems provide a low cost way to monitor patients and their needs in the comfort of their own homes. In first systems, the data were collected then sent directly to physicians to be interpreted. Nowadays, thanks to technological advancements, software and systems have been developed to process data, on a simple computer or even smartphone.

Learning Ophthalmologist Clinical Reasoning for Glaucoma Diagnosis from Fundus Images.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Ophthalmologists diagnose glaucoma through a structured reasoning process by sequentially evaluating optic nerve head characteristics before reaching a final diagnosis, whereas existing AI systems typically perform direct image classification without providing clinically meaningful reasoning. We present the first clinically annotated fundus reasoning dataset, comprising 1,077 fundus photographs paired with expert-authored six-step diagnostic reports. Building on this dataset, we develop a reasoning-driven vision-language framewor

Automated keratoconus screening with corneal topography analysis.

PURPOSE: Although visual inspection of corneal topography maps by trained experts can be powerful, this method is inherently subjective. Quantitative classification methods that can detect and classify abnormal topographic patterns would be useful. An automated system was developed to differentiate keratoconus patterns from other conditions using computer-assisted videokeratoscopy. METHODS: This system combined a classification tree with a linear discriminant function derived from discriminant analysis of eight indices obtained from TMS-1 videokeratoscope data. One hundred corneas with a vari

Nanotechnology applied to treatment of mucopolysaccharidoses.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are genetic disorders caused by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans due to deficiencies in the lysosomal enzymes responsible for their catabolism. Current treatments are not fully effective and are not available for all MPS types. Accordingly, researchers have tested novel therapies for MPS, including nanotechnology-based enzyme delivery systems and gene therapy. In this review, we aim to analyze some of the approaches involving nanotechnology as alternative treatments for MPS. Areas covered: We analyze nanotechnology-based systems, focusing on the biomaterials,

Designing a provider-led multimorbidity care model for fragmented insurance-based health systems: A mixed-methods study in Colombia.

Multimorbidity the coexistence of two or more chronic conditions is a growing challenge for health systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) structured around single-disease paradigms. In Colombia, insurer-provider fragmentation within the General System of Social Security in Health (SGSSS) compounds this challenge, generating discontinuities in care that disproportionately affect people living with multiple chronic conditions. Despite a national epidemiological characterisation, a World Bank-supported management proposal, and a formal pilot implementation, limited published evidence
