A longitudinal study of personality traits, anxiety, and depressive disorders in young adults.

BACKGROUND: How personality traits, anxiety, and depressive disorders relate longitudinally has implications for etiologic research and prevention. We sought to determine how neuroticism and extraversion relate to first-onset anxiety and depressive disorders in young adults. DESIGN: An inception cohort of 489 university freshmen was followed for 6 years. METHOD: Participants self-reported personality traits using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Anxiety and depressive disorders were assessed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. RESULTS: Baseline neuroticism predicted first-onset p

Alcohol-Dependent Subjects Show Different Personality Traits Compared With Subjects With Multiple Substance Dependence: Preliminary Data.

METHODS: We compared personality traits of 27 persons with multiple substance dependence with personality data of 52 alcohol-dependent persons regarding their personality traits and disorders (obtained by using SCID-II, TCI and NEO FFI). Both patient groups were free of any other mental disorder. RESULTS: In SKD-II, we found significant differences in the male group in dependent and scizotypic personality disorder. There were no significant differences in the female group, but sample was very small. We also found significant differences between alcohol-dependent and multiple substance-depende

The personality trait openness is related to cerebral 5-HTT levels.

Potentiation of serotonergic transmission increases cognitive flexibility, but can in other circumstances increase sensitivity to stressful environmental cues. The personality trait Openness to Experience reflects and is also associated with an increased risk for mood disorders. We hypothesized that the personality trait has an association with a biomarker of serotonergic transmission, the plasma membrane serotonin transporter (5-HTT). In 50 healthy volunteers, we tested for correlations between scores on the NEO-PI-R scale Openness to Experience and its subscales, and cerebral binding of the

Personality characteristics and sexual functioning of 188 cross-dressing men.

The literature on cross-dressing men has been primarily limited to self-identified patients at psychiatric clinics who are in distress. To understand the personality trait characteristics and sexual functioning of nonpatient cross-dressers, 188 non-treatment-seeking male cross-dressers completed the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI) and the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI). Respondents were classified as transvestites (TV; N = 83), transgenderists (TG; N = 61), or transsexuals (TS; N = 44) based on self-report and the nature of their cross-gender activities (e.g., use of female h

Differences in cortisol responding and post-stress affiliation among women who are naturally cycling, using oral contraceptives, and using IUDs.

Despite the pervasiveness of women's use of hormonal contraceptives, surprisingly little is known about the influence of HCs on psychological processes under stress. We examined how hormonal contraceptive use, including use of oral contraceptives and hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs), relates to physiological and affiliative responses under stress. Women (N=190) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), provided saliva samples for assays of free cortisol and progesterone, and completed three measures of affiliation. Women using both oral contraceptives and hormonal IUDs showed blunted

Virtual Reality in Surgical Training: A Comprehensive Study on Educational Efficacy, Memory Enhancement, and Mental State for Clinical Clerkship Students.

Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly used in surgical education. This study examines the impact of VR-integrated training on learning, memory, and psychological responses. A prototype VR system with immersive OR views was tested on 67 clinical clerkship students. OR experiences followed the simulation. Thirty-two questionnaires covered surgical procedures and systems. Mood and personality were assessed using POMS-2, focusing on Total Mood Disturbance (TMD), fatigue-inertia (FI), vigor-activity (VA), and friendliness (F). VR modestly increased interest in surgery (~3.4/5) but training confidenc

The relationship between personality traits and Alzheimer's disease: a narrative review.

The relationship between personality traits and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has received increasing attention in recent research. A narrative literature search was conducted in PubMed (2014-2025) using predefined keywords, with studies selected based on relevance and methodological quality. Personality traits-particularly high neuroticism and low conscientiousness-have been consistently associated with an increased risk of AD, influencing both its onset and clinical progression. Neuroticism emerges as the most robust and consistent risk factor, linked to accelerated cognitive decline, increased r

The Influence of Personality Type on Patient Outcome Measures and Therapeutic Alliance in Patients with Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) has been shown to have various biological, psychological, and social factors that affect prognosis. However, it is unclear how personality may influence self-reported outcome measures and therapeutic alliance (TA). METHODS: Eysenck's personality inventory was used to assess personality, while the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), Global Rating of Change (GROC), and the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) measured patient progress and relationship strength. All outcome measures were formulated in

Does personality moderate the association between social involvement and personal recovery in psychosis?

OBJECTIVE: Social factors are central in personal recovery (PR) and treatment of psychosis. However, weak associations between social involvement and PR were found. We aimed to replicate this weak association, and test whether it was explained by a moderating effect of neuroticism and extraversion. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 284 psychotic disorder patients. PR was assessed using the Recovery Quality of Life (ReQoL) questionnaire. Social involvement with a formative measure of the frequency of social interaction, and neuroticism and extraversion with the NEO Five Factor Invent

Psychometric properties and psychological correlates of the COVID-19 Anxiety Syndrome Scale: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.

Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has led to the demise of millions of people worldwide; additionally, it has resulted in a significant economic and mental health burden. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, various measures have been constructed to evaluate pandemic-related fear and anxiety. The COVID-19 Anxiety Syndrome Scale (C-19ASS) is a promising measure that assesses coping strategies (e.g., avoidance, checking, worrying and threat monitoring), termed 'COVID-19 Anxiety Syndrome', in response to COVID-19 fear and anxiety. The measure has been broadly welcomed, leading to its use in

Impostor syndrome, associated factors and impact on well-being across medical undergraduates and postgraduate medical professionals: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Impostor syndrome (IS) is a psychological state whereby individuals doubt their abilities despite evidence of competence. Though IS has been studied in specific medical groups, no review to date compares findings across groups. This study aimed to: (1) determine the range of IS rates among medical undergraduates versus postgraduates and (2) examine associated factors across both groups. DESIGN: This scoping review used the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews, using a five-step framework. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO databases were searched from in

A systematic review on the psychological factors behind vaccine hesitancy in the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy may represent a global threat because of its inherent consequences for health, social and economic systems. Understanding the factors associated with vaccine hesitancy is fundamental to developing effective healthcare policies. While previous studies have mainly focused on sociological and cultural variables and transient illness-specific fears and beliefs, the present systematic review focuses on the psychological factors (such as emotional dispositions, cognitive functioning and expectations, and stable personality traits) associated with vaccine hesitancy durin

The influence of personality on the risk of myocardial infarction in UK Biobank cohort.

Personality is a strong determinant for several health-related behaviours and has been linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases. However, the reports of personality's mediating role have been inconsistent with no data available from large population-based cohorts. The study aimed to create proxies for the Big Five personality traits, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness and neuroticism, to examine the longitudinal relationship between personality and myocardial infarction in the UK Biobank. The study sample comprised of 484,205 participants (55% female, 45% male
