[Hemispheric asymmetry of visual evoked potentials during human recognition of facial emotional expressions].

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) in standard 16 EEG derivations were recorded in 26 young men and 20 women during recognition of facial emotional expressions and geometric figures. The stimuli were presented on a computer screen in the center of the visual field or randomly in the right or left vision hemifields. Peak VEP latency and mean amplitude in 50-ms epochs were measured; spatiotemporal VEP dynamics was analyzed in a series of topographic maps. The right hemisphere was shown to be more important in processing emotional faces. The character of the asymmetry was dynamic: at earlier stages o

A comparison of the effects of a beta-adrenergic blocker and a benzodiazepine upon the recognition of human facial expressions.

RATIONALE: Accumulating evidence from neuropsychological and neuroimaging research suggests that facial expressions are processed by at least partially separable neurocognitive systems. Recent evidence implies that the processing of different facial expressions may also be dissociable pharmacologically by GABAergic and noradrenergic compounds, although no study has directly compared the two types of drugs. OBJECTIVE: The present study therefore directly compared the effects of a benzodiazepine with those of a beta-adrenergic blocker on the ability to recognise emotional expressions. METHODS:

Hemispheric differences in recognition of facial expressions: a VHF-study of negative, positive, and neutral emotions.

The present study was concerned with a tachistoscopic investigation of asymmetry of recognition of different facial emotional expressions. Twenty-eight subjects had nine different drawings of facial expressions (either positive, negative, or neutral in emotional content) presented either to the left or right visual half-field. Recognition of the correct face was made for each stimulus-presentation. The results showed overall better recognition for presentations in the left half-field (LVF) (i.e., right hemisphere) compared to right half-field (RVF) (i.e., left hemisphere) presentations. Furthe

Intact recognition of facial expression, gender, and age in patients with impaired recognition of face identity.

We conducted a series of experiments to assess the ability to recognize the meaning of facial expressions, gender, and age in four patients with severe impairments of the recognition of facial identity. In three patients the recognition of face identity could be dissociated from that of facial expression, age, and gender. In one, all forms of face recognition were impaired. Thus, a given lesion may preclude one type of recognition but not another. We conclude that (1) the cognitive demands posed by different forms of recognition are met at different processing levels, and (2) different levels

OQ-FERNet: An occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network for real-time human-computer interaction.

Facial expression recognition is an important task in real-time human-computer interaction, but its practical application is still limited by partial facial occlusion, high computational cost, and the lack of fine-grained emotion representation. To address these issues, this paper proposes OQ-FERNet, an occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network. The proposed network adopts MobileNetV4-Conv-S as a lightweight facial expression feature extraction backbone to obtain compact and discriminative representations with low computational cost. On this basis, an Occlusion-aware R

Expression Patterns of SMAD1-8 in the Peripheral Facial Nerve Following Compressive Nerve Injury or Axotomy.

Facial nerve injury can lead to significant functional impairment, emotional impacts, and difficulties in social and economic activities. Although peripheral nerves have the potential for recovery, incomplete regeneration can pose challenges. Suppressor of Mothers Against Decapentaplegic Homolog (SMAD) proteins are crucial in the nerve-regeneration process. The study aimed to investigate the changes in SMAD protein expression involved in peripheral nerve regeneration following facial nerve injury induced by compression or axotomy in a pre-clinical study conducted on Sprague Dawley rats. Revisiting emotion recognition in different types of temporal lobe epilepsy: The influence of facial expression intensity.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) can induce various difficulties in recognizing emotional facial expressions (EFE), particularly for negative valence emotions. However, these difficulties have not been systematically examined according to the localization of the epileptic focus. For this purpose, we used a forced-choice recognition task in which faces expressing fear, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, or happiness were presented in different intensity levels from moderate to high intensity. The first objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of emotional intensity on the recognition of di

Abnormal visual representations associated with confusion of perceived facial expression in schizophrenia with social anxiety disorder.

Deficits in social functioning are especially severe amongst schizophrenia individuals with the prevalent comorbidity of social anxiety disorder (SZ&SAD). Yet, the mechanisms underlying the recognition of facial expression of emotions-a hallmark of social cognition-are practically unexplored in SZ&SAD. Here, we aim to reveal the visual representations SZ&SAD (n = 16) and controls (n = 14) rely on for facial expression recognition. We ran a total of 30,000 trials of a facial expression categorization task with Bubbles, a data-driven technique. Results showed that SZ&SAD's ability to categorize

The facial neural crest controls fore- and midbrain patterning by regulating Foxg1 expression through Smad1 activity.

The facial neural crest (FNC), a pluripotent embryonic structure forming craniofacial structures, controls the activity of brain organisers and stimulates cerebrum growth. To understand how the FNC conveys its trophic effect, we have studied the role of Smad1, which encodes an intracellular transducer, to which multiple signalling pathways converge, in the regulation of Foxg1. Foxg1 is a transcription factor essential for telencephalic specification, the mutation of which leads to microcephaly and mental retardation. Smad1 silencing, based on RNA interference (RNAi), was performed in pre-migra

Expression of Cdcrel-1 (Pnutl1), a gene frequently deleted in velo-cardio-facial syndrome/DiGeorge syndrome.

The murine Cdcrel-1 (Pnutl1) gene belongs to the family of septins, which are thought to be involved in cytokinesis in yeast, Drosophila and vertebrates. Recent studies implicate Cdcrel-1 in the regulation of vesicle transport in neurons of the adult brain. The human homologue, hCDCREL-1 maps to chromosome 22q11.2, a region commonly deleted in patients displaying velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) or DiGeorge syndrome (DGS). During development, Cdcrel-1 transcripts are expressed from E10.5 on in the nervous system such as the dorsal root ganglia and the cranial ganglia as well as the lateral l

Differential regulation of cytoskeletal gene expression in hamster facial motoneurons: effects of axotomy and testosterone treatment.

We have previously demonstrated that systemic administration of testosterone increases the rate of axonal regeneration following facial nerve crush in adult male hamsters. In the present study, the molecular mechanisms by which androgens could enhance axonal regeneration were examined at a cellular level. Specifically, the following question was addressed using quantitative in situ hybridization with cDNA probes complementary to betaII, and alpha1 tubulin mRNAs: Does exogenous testosterone augment axotomy-induced changes in tubulin mRNA expression in hamster facial motoneurons (FMN)? DNA-fragmentation and expression of apoptosis-related proteins in experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle.

Muscle fibres may undergo apoptotic cell death in several neuromuscular disorders such as denervated muscle fibres in spinal muscular atrophies. We investigated DNA-fragmentation (in situ by the TUNEL-method) and expression of apoptosis-associated proteins in experimentally denervated and reinnervated rat facial muscle up to 24 weeks after surgery to evaluate the rate and time lapse of apoptotic muscle fibre loss. While denervated muscle displayed constantly high rates of DNA-fragmentation, denervated and immediately reinnervated muscle showed a distinct decrease of primarily elevated DNA-clea

Infant Facial Expression Analysis: Towards a Real-Time Video Monitoring System Using R-CNN and HMM.

The manual monitoring of young infants suffering from diseases like reflux is significant, since infants can hardly articulate their feelings. In this work, we propose a video-based infant monitoring system for the analysis of infant expressions and states, approaching real-time performance. The expressions of interest consist of discomfort, unhappy, joy and neutral, whereas states include sleep, pacifier and open mouth. Benefiting from the expression analysis, the discomfort moments can also be used and correlated with a symptom-related disease, such as a reflux measurement for the diagnosis

The expression of a motoneuron-specific serine protease, motopsin (PRSS12), after facial nerve axotomy in mice.

Motopsin (PRSS12) is a mosaic serine protease that is preferentially expressed in motor neurons. To study the relationship between motopsin and motoneuron function, we investigated the expression of motopsin mRNA in facial nerve nuclei after facial nerve axotomy at the anterior margin of the parotid gland in mice. Neuronal function was monitored by assessing vibrissal motion in 3 months. Vibrissal behaviour on the injured side disappeared until the day 14 post-operation, and then recovered between the day 21 and 35. Motopsin expression decreased at the day 14, but markedly recovered by the day

Microcephaly-lymphedema-chorioretinal dysplasia: a unique genetic syndrome with variable expression and possible characteristic facial appearance.

We report on a follow-up examination of a family with microcephaly and lymphedema. The finding of chorioretinal dysplasia with variable visual deficit in multiple relatives, which was not previously discovered, supports the concept of microcephaly, lymphedema, and chorioretinopathy as being a single autosomal dominant genetic entity with variable expression. We recommend that fundoscopic examination be performed in all patients with microcephaly with or without lymphedema.

A Psychological Guide to Lower Face Botulinum Toxin Injections: Baseline Emotional Functions of Facial Expressions.

BACKGROUND: The lower face conveys critical interpersonal signals and is central to how patients are emotionally evaluated by others. As botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is increasingly used in the perioral and mandibular region, there is a growing need to understand how such procedures may influence both aesthetic outcomes and the dynamics of emotional communication and social perception. AIMS: This narrative review outlines the baseline emotional functions of lower-face expressions and supports clinicians in integrating emotional and interpersonal considerations into BoNT-A treatment plannin

Recognition and classification of facial expression using artificial intelligence as a key of early detection in neurological disorders.

The recognition and classification of facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) presents a promising avenue for early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative disorders. This narrative review critically examines the current state of AI-driven facial expression analysis in the context of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. We discuss the potential of AI techniques, including deep learning and computer vision, to accurately interpret and categorize subtle changes in facial expressions associated with these pathological conditions. Furthermore, we exp
