Impacts of a new transcription factor family: mammalian GCM proteins in health and disease.

GCM proteins constitute a small transcription factor family with a DNA-binding domain exhibiting a novel fold composed of two subdomains rigidly held together by coordination of one of two structural zinc cations. In all known cases, GCM proteins exert the role of master regulators: the prototypical family member determines gliogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster, whereas mammalian GCM proteins orchestrate divergent aspects of development and physiology in placenta, kidney, thymus, and parathyroid gland. Recent data point to an involvement of GCM proteins in different pathological contexts, suc

Childhood family violence history and women's risk for intimate partner violence and poor health.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for associations between generations in family violence and between family violence in both childhood and adulthood and women's health. Most studies focus on a subset of family violence (child abuse, witnessing intimate partner violence [IPV] as a child, and/or adult IPV), and few examine possible differences associated with the nature of abusive experiences, such as physical versus sexual abuse. METHODS: A population-based telephone survey, the 1999 and 2001 Washington State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, asked a representative sample of 352

Expectant parents' representations of early attachment relationships: associations with mental health and family history.

The association between adult representations of early attachment relationships and history of individual and family mental health was examined in a sample of 233 expectant mothers and fathers. As predicted, security of attachment was linked to mental health. Parents classified as Preoccupied were more likely than other parents to report suicidal ideation. Whereas parents classified as Unresolved more often reported suicidal ideation, emotional distress, and substance abuse. With respect to family history. Unresolved and Preoccupied attachment classifications were significantly related to chil

Primary health care services provided by nurse practitioners and family physicians in shared practice.

BACKGROUND: Collaborative practice involving nurse practitioners (NPs) and family physicians (FPs) is undergoing a renaissance in Canada. However, it is not understood what services are delivered by FPs and NPs working collaboratively. One objective of this study was to determine what primary health care services are provided to patients by NPs and FPs working in the same rural practice setting. METHODS: Baseline data from 2 rural Ontario primary care practices that participated in a pilot study of an outreach intervention to improve structured collaborative practice between NPs and FPs were

AIDS and family planning counseling of psychiatrically ill women in community mental health clinics.

Eighty-two of 83 mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, were surveyed to determine their attitudes and behaviors toward AIDS prevention and family planning counseling with psychiatrically ill female outpatients. Nearly all reported that information should be provided on AIDS and family planning. However, they reported that they had raised topics of AIDS with only 19% of patients and family planning with only 25% of patients. This lack of communication was confirmed by patients' own reports. Factors which might relate to this lack of communication are explored.

Impact of paternity leave on the health of fathers and their families: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2024, paid paternity leave was available in 102 countries worldwide. However, the accessibility and methods of taking paternity leave are influenced by cultural background and individual values, leading to variations in uptake rate. Both positive and negative effects of paternity leave have been reported on the health of fathers, partners and children. A comprehensive understanding of this topic is essential for medical professionals supporting fathers undertaking childcare. The aim of this review is to identify and provide an overview of research related to the impact of p

Familial confounding and causal inference in child and adolescent neurodevelopment and mental health.

Recent announcements by the US Government linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism in offspring highlight the risks of misinterpreting observational research to inform policy; this is a clear example of the principle that association does not equal causation. Unmeasured familial confounding is a common bias in epidemiological studies, whereby shared genetic or environmental factors within families produce spurious associations between risk factors and outcomes. In this Viewpoint, aimed at clinicians from a range of disciplines working with children and young people with neurodevelopm

Occupational health hazards of bidi workers and their families in India: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Bidi workers and their families are exposed to harmful substances during bidi rolling, thereby jeopardising their health. We aimed to assess existing evidence on health conditions of bidi workers and their families in India. METHODS: We searched nine databases and relevant websites, and conducted citation screening to identify primary studies assessing occupational health hazards of bidi workers and their families. Two authors independently conducted screening and data extraction. We synthesised the findings narratively in a structured fashion. RESULTS: We found 3842 studies, out

Vitamin D as a biomarker of health in snoring children: a familial aggregation study.

BACKGROUND: Hypovitaminosis D is a common health problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inter-relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and paternal and maternal vitamin D status in a sample of snoring children. METHODS: We selected 137 participants for whom serum 25(OH)D had been measured and underwent overnight polysomnography evaluation. Serum glucose, lipids, liver enzymes, parathyroid hormone, insulin, and glycated hemoglobin were also measured. Glucose and insulin levels were used to estimate insulin resistance with the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). RESULTS

Attitude of families of patients with genetic diseases to use m-health technologies.

BACKGROUND: Dealing with complex chronic disease may take great advantage of mobile health (m-health) technologies. We performed an online survey on the perception of use of m-health technologies among families of patients affected with Down's syndrome, Williams' syndrome, and 22q11 deletion syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The survey included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, availability of a connection to the Internet on different devices, interest in m-health technologies, and functions to be implemented in order to meet family needs. Through multivariate analysis we studied

"The family is the clinic, the community is the hospital": community mental health in Timor-Leste.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the history and recent development of mental health services in Timor-Leste, a small developing country recovering from conflict. Challenges to effective service delivery are discussed as well as plans for future development. CONCLUSIONS: Timor-Leste's mental health service began just over a decade ago. Unlike many other low and middle income countries where hospital-based services predominate, the mental health model in Timor-Leste is entirely community based. However, challenges to effective mental health care delivery are similar to most developing countries

Health economics and genetic service development: a familial cancer genetic example.

Advances in genetics are allowing a greater number of clinical genetics services to be offered to individuals with family histories of particular diseases. It is important that such services are not allowed to proliferate before they have been properly evaluated in terms of both their clinical and cost-effectiveness. A randomised controlled study of a new clinical genetics service in Wales for women with a family history of breast cancer has been undertaken. The health service costs from initial consultation and counselling through to mutation testing within families were assessed, along with

The comfort of family practice residents with health care of patients of the opposite gender.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that female and male residents see disproportionately few patients of the opposite gender. Such an imbalance may be detrimental to the quality of residency training. This study examined residents' levels of comfort in caring for patients of the same and opposite genders and their assessments of the adequacy of the number of same- and opposite-gender patients they saw during residency training. METHODS: Data were collected from four family practice residency programs in the Midwest. All current family practice residents at the four sites surveyed w

The Role of Physiotherapists on Family Health Teams: Understanding Active Interprofessional Team Members' Perspectives.

Purpose: Family Health Teams (FHTs) were established in 2005 to increase access to health care and collaborative decision-making. It remains unclear how effective this care model is for socio-economically and culturally diverse areas like Scarborough, Ontario. This study aimed to (1) understand administrators' and practitioners' perspectives on how FHTs are operating in this region; and (2) illuminate the current and potential roles of physiotherapists within FHTs to address diverse health needs in the Scarborough community. Method: Participants were recruited by snowball and purposive samplin

Validation of self-reported family history of myocardial infarction using nationwide health care data.

UNLABELLED: Self-reported family history of myocardial infarction (MI) is frequently used to assess cardiovascular risk. However, validation of self-reported family history has often been limited to small samples, and to death-certificates or self-reported medical history as reference. This study investigated the accuracy of self-reported family history of MI in a population-based cohort, using register data as reference. We included 25,302 participants from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) with sufficient register coverage. Self-reported family history of MI in parents and

No evidence of parental mental health influencing children's academic achievement: a within-family study.

Children of parents with psychopathology generally perform less well in school than their peers. Parental symptoms might not, however, account for their lower achievement, as other familial factors might contribute. To examine the role of parental symptoms, we analyse data from 9,000 families in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Study (MoBa). Parents reported their symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, and alcohol use disorder during pregnancy and during their child's childhood. Children in 5th grade (aged 10) completed nationally-standardised tests of mathematics, rea
