Growth performance, feeding behavior, health status, and blood metabolites of environmentally heat-loaded Holstein dairy calves fed diets supplemented with chromium.

We investigated the effect of Cr supplementation on growth performance, feeding behavior, health status, and blood metabolites of summer-exposed dairy calves during the pre- and postweaning periods. A total of 24 newborn Holstein female calves (1 d of age; 42.1 ± 0.89 kg of body weight) were assigned randomly to a control group (no Cr supplement; Cr-) or a Cr group (Cr+) receiving 0.05 mg of Cr/kg of body weight0.75. During the study period, the average maximum temperature-humidity index was 81.3 units, indicating a high environmental heat load. Chromium was provided in colostrum and milk duri

Effect of undigested neutral detergent fiber content of alfalfa hay on lactating dairy cows: Feeding behavior, fiber digestibility, and lactation performance.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of 2 alfalfa hays differing in undigested neutral detergent fiber content and digestibility used as the main forage source in diets fed to high producing cows for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production. Diets were designed to have 2 different amounts of undigestible NDF [high (Hu) and low (Lu)], as determined by 240-h in vitro analysis (uNDF240). Alfalfa hay in vitro digestibility [% of amylase- and sodium sulfite-treated NDF with ash correction (aNDFom)] at 24 and 240 h was 40.2 and 31.2% and 53.6 and 45.7% for low- (LD) and high-diges

Effects of chronic dietary exposure to monosodium glutamate on feeding behavior, adiposity, gastrointestinal motility, and cardiovascular function in healthy adult rats.

BACKGROUND: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor-enhancer widely used as a food additive. However, its safe dietary concentration and its toxicity, including its possible implication in the recent metabolic syndrome pandemia, is still a controversial issue. Therefore, a deep knowledge of its effects upon regular dietary use is needed. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure to MSG on feeding behavior, abdominal fat, gastrointestinal motility, and cardiovascular function in rats. METHODS: Two groups of adult male Wistar rats were used: control and treated with MSG (4 g/L in d

Repeated ruminal acidosis challenges in lactating dairy cows at high and low risk for developing acidosis: feeding, ruminating, and lying behavior.

An experiment was conducted to determine whether the susceptibility to ruminal acidosis, as defined through differences in days in milk (DIM), milk production level, and ration composition, influences cow feeding, ruminating, and lying behavior and whether these behaviors change during an acute bout of ruminal acidosis. Eight ruminally cannulated cows were assigned to 1 of 2 acidosis risk levels: low risk (LR, mid-lactation cows fed a 60:40 forage:concentrate ratio diet) or high risk (HR, early lactation cows fed a 45:55 forage:concentrate diet). As a result, diets were intentionally confounde

Transcriptional interruption of cAMP response element binding protein modulates superoxide dismutase and neuropeptide Y-mediated feeding behavior in freely moving rats.

The appetite-suppressing effect of phenylpropanolamine (PPA) has been attributed to its inhibitory action on neuropeptide Y (NPY), an appetite stimulant. However, molecular mechanisms underlying this effect are not clear. This study aimed to investigate if cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) signaling was involved. Moreover, possible role of superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD-2) during PPA treatment was also examined. Rats were daily treated with PPA for 4 days. Changes in hypothalamic NPY, protein kinase A, CREB, and SOD-2 mRNA contents were measured and compared. Results showed that protei

Glucagon-like peptide-1, corticotropin-releasing hormone, and hypothalamic neuronal histamine interact in the leptin-signaling pathway to regulate feeding behavior.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), and hypothalamic neuronal histamine suppress food intake, a target of leptin action in the brain. This study examined the interactions of GLP-1, CRH, and histamine downstream from the leptin-signaling pathway in regulating feeding behavior. Infusion of GLP-1 into the third cerebral ventricle (i3vt) at a dose of 1 mug significantly decreased the initial 1 h cumulative food intake in rats as compared with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) controls. The GLP-1-induced suppression of feeding was partially attenuated by intraperit

Lasalocid and particle size of corn grain for dairy cows in early lactation. 2. Effect on ruminal measurements and feeding behavior.

The effects particle size of corn grain and the ionophore lasalocid on ruminal fermentation and feeding behavior of early lactation cows were examined. Eight multiparous and 4 primiparous cows in early lactation were fed diets (44% forage) with cracked or ground dried shelled corn grain and with or without lasalocid (360 mg/d per cow). The experiment was a replicated (n = 3) 4 x 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods and a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Ground corn decreased ruminal turnover time of starch, did not affect ruminal lactate concentrations, increased propionate, decre

Influence of Tenebrio molitor Meal Inclusion (25-45%) on Clinical and Behavioral Responses in Laboratory Rat Feeding Trial.

Although Tenebrio molitor is increasingly explored as a feed ingredient, uncertainty remains regarding the effects of high dietary inclusion levels in model animals. Therefore, this study evaluated physiological and behavioral responses to graded inclusion levels of T. molitor meal (25-45%) in the diets of adult female Wistar rats. The assessed outcomes comprised (i) clinical parameters, (ii) food and water intake, (iii) hematology and serum biochemistry, and (iv) behavior. Across the insect-fed groups, no unintended weight loss or excessive gain was observed; instead, animals modulated their

Longitudinal associations between food fussiness and parental feeding behaviors in Chinese children: between- and within-person effects.

BACKGROUND: The directionality of longitudinal associations between children's food fussiness and parental feeding behaviors remains contested. This study aimed to assess the dynamic relationship between children's food fussiness and feeding behaviors. METHODS: To disentangle these effects, this study employed cross-lagged panel models (CLPMs) and random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) using longitudinal data from 588 Chinese children (Mean age = 3.7 years, SD = 0.3, 51.7% boys) across three waves over two years. CLPMs capture between-person associations, while RI-CLPMs isolate

Eating Behaviors, Caregiver Feeding Interactions, and Dietary Patterns of Children Born Preterm: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Infants born preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) often experience feeding problems during hospitalization. Whether difficulties persist or have long-term sequelae on childhood eating is unclear. We aimed to describe the oromotor eating skills (e.g., chewing/swallowing), eating behaviors (e.g., food neophobia), food parenting practices (e.g., pressure to eat), and dietary patterns of preterm children during late infancy (6-12 mo) and early childhood (>12 mo-7 y) and to determine whether these differed from those of term-born peers. We identified 67 articles (57 unique studies) for inclusion. We us

Technical note: Validation of an ear-tag accelerometer to identify feeding and activity behaviors of tiestall-housed dairy cattle.

The objective of this study was to validate the CowManager SensOor ear-tag accelerometer (Agis Automatisering BV, Harmelen, the Netherlands) against visual observations of feeding, rumination, resting, and active behaviors of tiestall-housed dairy cows. Prior validation of the sensor has been published for freestall and grazing dairy herds. However, the behavioral differences that exist among these and a tiestall system necessitate additional validation. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 10) at different lactation stages and parities were included in the study. Cows were monitored both visually and

Decreasing predictability of visual motion enhances feed-forward processing in visual cortex when stimuli are behaviorally relevant.

Recent views of information processing in the (human) brain emphasize the hierarchical structure of the central nervous system, which is assumed to form the basis of a functional hierarchy. Hierarchical predictive processing refers to the notion that higher levels try to predict activity in lower areas, while lower levels transmit a prediction error up the hierarchy whenever the predictions fail. The present study aims at testing hypothetical modulatory effects of unpredictable visual motion on forward connectivities within the visual cortex. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was acquired

The effects of sublethal levels of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid herbicide (2,4-D) on feeding behaviors of the crayfish O. rusticus.

The widespread use of herbicides across the globe has increased the probability of synthetic chemicals entering freshwater habitats. On entering aquatic habitats, these chemicals target and disrupt both physiological and behavioral functioning in various aquatic organisms. Herbicides, such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), can have negative impacts on chemoreception because these receptor cells are in direct contact with water-soluble chemicals in the environment. Studies focusing on lethal concentration (LC50) levels may understate the impact of herbicides within aquatic habitats bec

Inappropriate feeding behaviors and dietary intakes in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder or probable prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a leading cause of significant neurobehavioral and neurocognitive deficits. Its potential consequences for eating behaviors, nutritional status, and other nutritional issues in childhood have received little attention. METHODS: Nineteen children (11 boys, 8 girls) of mean age 9.6 years, referred for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) screening and assessment, were analyzed with physical exams and caregiver questionnaires to identify possible abnormalities in food and eating behaviors. Fourteen children contributed 24-hour diet recalls and wer

Associations of subclinical hypocalcemia at calving with milk yield, and feeding, drinking, and standing behaviors around parturition in Holstein cows.

The objectives of this study were to describe the associations of subclinical hypocalcemia with milk yield, and feeding, drinking, and resting behavior during the period around calving. Blood was sampled within 24h of calving and analyzed for serum total calcium. Fifteen Holstein dairy cows were classified as having subclinical hypocalcemia (serum calcium concentration ≤ 1.8 mmol/L, without clinical milk fever) and were matched with 15 control cows (serum calcium concentration >1.8 mmol/L) based on parity and presence of other diseases. Daily feeding and drinking behavior were monitored using

Behavioral toxicity of TDCPP in marine zooplankton: Evidence from feeding and swimming responses, molecular dynamics and metabolomics of rotifers.

As new organic flame retardants, chlorinated organophosphate esters (Cl-OPEs) have high water solubility and structural similarity to organophosphate pesticides, posing risks to aquatic organisms. The potential neurotoxicity of Cl-OPEs has attracted attention, especially in marine invertebrates with a relatively simple nervous system. In this study, a marine rotifer with a cerebral ganglion, Brachionus plicatilis, was exposed to tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) (two environmental concentrations and one extreme level), and the changes in feeding and swimming behaviors and internal

Species Composition and Feeding Behaviors of Vector Mosquitoes of Avian Infectious Diseases at a Wild Bird Rehabilitation Facility in Japan.

Although wild bird rehabilitation facilities are important for the conservation of wild species, individuals may be kept within the facilities for long periods, consequently posing a risk for the bird to be infected with pathogens to which they are not naturally exposed. In turn, novel pathogens may be introduced through rescued migratory species. Avian malaria and West Nile fever are important avian diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. To understand the transmission dynamics of such diseases at rehabilitation facilities, the ecology of vector mosquitoes, including species composition, seasonal
