The Cochrane database of systematic reviews2024eng
BACKGROUND: This is an update of a review first published in 2010. Use of topical fluoride has become more common over time. Excessive fluoride consumption from topical fluorides in young children could potentially lead to dental fluorosis in permanent teeth.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the relationship between the use of topical fluorides in young children and the risk of developing dental fluorosis in permanent teeth.
SEARCH METHODS: We carried out electronic searches of the Cochrane Oral Health Trials Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, three other databases, and two trials registers. We sear

OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to determine the fluoride levels in commercially available bottled waters and assess the accuracy of the fluoride levels labels on the bottles.
METHODS: We obtained the labels from 28 water bottles from markets in Almadinah Almunawwarah. Water samples were diluted with an equal volume of total ionic strength adjustment buffer at the General Administration for Water Services. The electrode potential of each sample was then directly compared to standard fluoride solutions. For each sample, two readings were taken, and the average was recorded. Fluoride-ion levels

BACKGROUND: Spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) provide guidance on allowable chemical exposures for nominal and emergency situations aboard spacecraft. SMACs are set to mitigate or preclude potential crew health effects and performance degradation. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas is highly irritating. Inhaled HF produces irritation primarily in the upper respiratory tract. HF is not routinely present in spacecraft atmospheres. However, it can be produced in spacecraft due to overheating or combustion events involving materials containing fluorinated organics.METHODS: Toxicological

UNLABELLED: In recent years there has been a lot of talk about toothpastes with a particular chemical compound: stannous fluoride (SnF2). Its presence is currently still highly controversial, as the latter could have negative health effects. The different companies that produce toothpastes express its dosage in ppm. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to analyze all randomized clinical trials in the literature over the last 10 years and to draw clear results on the function of stannous fluoride, for this purpose the authors performed a Mann-Whitney U Test.

Excessive systemic uptake of inorganic fluorides causes disturbances of bone homeostasis. The mechanism of skeletal fluorosis is still uncertain. This study aimed to study the effect of fluoride on osteocyte-driven osteoclastogenesis and probe into the role of PTH in this process. IDG-SW3 cells seeded in collagen-coated constructs were developed into osteocyte-like cells through induction of mineral agents. Then, osteocyte-like cells were exposed to fluoride in the presence or absence of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Cell viability and their capacity to produce receptor activator of nuclear facto

BACKGROUND: 18-Fluorine sodium fluoride is a well-known radiotracer used for bone metastasis diagnosis. Its uptake correlation with cardiovascular (CV) risk was primarily suggested in oncological patients. Moreover, as a specific marker of microcalcification, it seems to correlate with CV disease progression and plaque instability.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Our purpose was to systematically review clinical studies that characterized the use of this marker in CV conditions. In atherosclerosis, most studies report a positive correlation with the burden of CV risk factors and vascular calcification.

The discovery and implementation of fluoride in the prevention of dental caries is often praised as one of the most important achievements in health care. In the early 20th century, it took 30 y to identify fluoride as the cause of enamel mottling but also of reduced caries prevalence in a population drinking water containing fluoride. Similarly, from 1960 to 1990, it took major efforts to unravel the working mode of fluoride in such detail that a rational scheme of caries prevention could be formulated. This article describes the scientific struggle leading to a consensus on the topic. For a

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a form of nuclear imaging, which quantitatively assesses the metabolic activity through the uptake of radioactive tracers. 18F-fluoride is a positron-emitting isotope with high affinity for bone. Despite its potential as a non-invasive measure of bone metabolism, quantitative 18F-fluoride PET has only been used sparsely in orthopaedic applications. It has been speculated that 18F-fluoride PET characterizes cellular activity of bone forming cells in the early stages of the regenerative process and therefore precedes the mineralization detected by convention

UNLABELLED: A high dental caries burden coupled with a lack of water or salt fluoridation make it imperative that toothpastes available to the South African consumer demonstrate adequate potential for caries control and contain between 1000ppm and 1500ppm total fluoride (TF), with at least 1000ppm F in free available/soluble form.
METHODS: The objective was to determine TF, total soluble fluoride (TSF) and insoluble fluoride (IF) concentrations in 22 fluoride toothpastes commercially available in South Africa. Samples were purchased from a major pharmaceutical and food retailer located in the

Fluorine or fluoride can have toxic effects on bone tissue and soft tissue at high concentrations. These negative effects include but not limited to cytotoxicity, immunotoxicity, blood toxicity, and oxidative damage. Apoptosis plays an important role in fluoride-induced toxicity of kidney, liver, spleen, thymus, bursa of Fabricius, cecal tonsil, and cultured cells. Here, apoptosis activated by high level of fluoride has been systematically reviewed, focusing on three pathways: mitochondrion-mediated, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated, and death receptor-mediated pathways. However, ver

Truly naked fluoride exists only in the gas phase. Fluoride can be stabilized by a complexing agent and an organic cation, resulting in anhydrous or dehydrated fluoride which is "partially naked." This partially naked fluoride enables fluorination reactions at much lower temperatures than hydrated fluorides. Here we show a simple method for preparing fluoride-based solvate ionic liquids (SILs) by mixing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) bromide, silver fluoride (AgF), and EG (1:1:1 in molar ratio) in dry methanol. Removal of the methanol p

The montmorillonite-catalyzed reactions of the 5'-phosphorimidazolide of adenosine in the presence of fluoride were investigated to complete our study on the effect of salts on this type of reaction. Both anions and cations have been found to influence the oligomerization reactions of the activated nucleotides, being used here as a model system for pre-biotic RNA synthesis. However, in total contrast to the behavior of the activated nucleotides in the presence of montmorillonite and other salts, alkali metal fluorides did not yield any detectable oligomerization products except in very dilute

In recent years, different agents have been discussed as potential alternatives to fluoride in the prevention of dental erosion. These agents are intended to form acid-resistant layers on the surface, to induce repair of eroded lesions by mineral precipitation or to prevent the enzymatic degradation of demineralised collagen. The application of adhesives and/or fissure sealants is considered to be an effective alternative to fluoride, but requires professional application and, depending on the product used, a re-sealing of the surface every several months. Studies testing film-forming products

Current models for increasing the anti-caries effects of fluoride (F) agents emphasize the importance of maintaining a cariostatic concentration of F in oral fluids. The concentration of F in oral fluids is maintained by the release of this ion from bioavailable reservoirs on the teeth, oral mucosa and - most importantly, because of its association with the caries process - dental plaque. Oral F reservoirs appear to be of two types: (1) mineral reservoirs, in particular calcium fluoride or phosphate-contaminated 'calcium-fluoride-like' deposits; (2) biological reservoirs, in particular (with r

Single crystals of the title compound, Pb(2)CrF(7), were obtained by solid-state reaction. The monoclinic structure is isotypic with Pb(2)RhF(7) and is built up of CrF(6) (3-) octa-hedra isolated from each other, inserted in a fluorite-related matrix of PbF(6) distorted octa-hedra, and PbF(8) square anti-prisms sharing edges and corners. The seventh F atom is 'independent', connected only to three Pb atoms within FPb(3) triangles, sharing an edge and building an almost planar Pb(4)F(2) unit, so that the formula can alternatively be written as Pb(2)F(CrF(6)).

OBJECTIVES: Existing fluoride concentration and consumption data were used to estimate fluoride intakes from the diet and toothpaste use, for New Zealand subpopulations, to identify any population groups at risk of high-fluoride intake.
METHODS: For each sub-population, two separate dietary intake estimates were made--one based on a non-fluoridated water supply (fluoride concentration of 0.1 mg/L), and the other based on a water supply fluoridated to a concentration of 1.0 mg/L. Fluoride concentration data were taken from historical surveys, while food consumption data were taken from nationa
