Botulinum Neurotoxin Detection Methods for Public Health Response and Surveillance.

Botulism outbreak due to consumption of food contaminated with botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) is a public health emergency. The threat of bioterrorism through deliberate distribution in food sources and/or aerosolization of BoNTs raises global public health and security concerns due to the potential for high mortality and morbidity. Rapid and reliable detection methods are necessary to support clinical diagnosis and surveillance for identifying the source of contamination, performing epidemiological analysis of the outbreak, preventing and responding to botulism outbreaks. This review considers

The role of prenatal food insecurity on breastfeeding behaviors: findings from the United States pregnancy risk assessment monitoring system.

BACKGROUND: In addition to its health and nutritional benefits, breastfeeding can save low-income, food insecure mothers the cost of infant formula so that money can be spent on food and other necessities. Yet breastfeeding may exacerbate food insecurity by negatively affecting maternal employment. The relationship between food insecurity and breastfeeding has been explored previously, with varying results. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between prenatal food insecurity and breastfeeding initiation and early cessation (< 10 weeks) among U.S. mothers. METHODS: Data

Food insecurity as an underexplored pathway linking ethnic enclave contexts and anxiety among Dominicans in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Migration shapes access to food environments and practices, with implications for both nutritional and mental health. Although neighborhood ethnic concentration has been linked to mental health among Latino populations, the findings remain inconsistent, and the mechanisms are not well understood. Food insecurity, a common experience among immigrant households, may represent a key psychosocial pathway linking the neighborhood context to anxiety. Caribbean Latino populations, including Dominicans, remain underrepresented in this literature. This study examined whether Dominican eth

Shifts in Food Acquisition and Consumption Habits During COVID-19: Insights from a Diverse Sample.

OBJECTIVES: Shifts in food acquisition during the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected diet. Assessing changes in diet is needed to inform food assistance programs aimed at mitigating diet disparities during future crises. This longitudinal study assessed changes in diet among a low-income, racially diverse population from March-November 2020. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 291 adults living in Austin, TX. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression models assessed the relationship between changes in consumption of fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables (FV), and sugar-sweeten

Food environment and cardiovascular kidney metabolic diseases mortality.

Cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic (CKM) diseases are leading causes of mortality in the United States (US), with geographic and socioeconomic disparities. The community food environment, including food accessibility and security, is a modifiable determinant of CKM health. We systematically examined associations between county-level multidimensional food environment indicators and CKM-related mortality across US counties. We conducted an ecological analysis integrating data from the County Health Rankings and CDC WONDER. Generalized linear models estimated rate ratios (RR) for age-adjusted

Food Insecurity and Its Association with the Spectrum of Steatotic Liver Disease and Hepatic Fibrosis.

The impact of food insecurity on the subtypes of steatotic liver disease (SLD) under the updated nomenclature remains undefined. We aimed to assess the relationship between food insecurity and metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD), alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), and metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-related SLD (MetALD), with a focus on significant fibrosis. Using data from the 2017 to 2023 U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we defined food security as full, marginal, low, or very low. We defined SLD subtypes and significant fibrosis using transient elastograph

Rationale and design of the KP ENRICH trial: A food is medicine intervention in low-income high-risk adults with diabetes within Kaiser Permanente.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is associated with poor glycemic control and increased risk for diabetes-related complications. The clinical benefit of addressing these challenges through a medically supportive grocery prescription (GRx) program in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) remains unclear. We report the aims and design of a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a 6-month GRx intervention on hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels among low-income adults with T2D. METHODS: The Kaiser Permanente Evaluating Nutritional Interventions in Food-Insecure High-Risk Adults (K

Why Are Hungry College Students Not Seeking Help? Predictors of and Barriers to Using an On-Campus Food Pantry.

BACKGROUND: The number of food pantries on U.S. college campuses has increased in response to students' food insecurity, but limited information is available to describe the impact of this resource. The objective of this cross-sectional investigation was to examine the relationship between food insecurity and food pantry awareness, use, and perceived barriers to use. METHODS: Students attending the University of Florida in fall 2017 (n = 899) completed the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Adult Food Security Survey and responded to questions about food pantry awareness and use.

Epidemiology of Food Insecurity in a Nationally Representative Sample of Lymphoma Patients.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the United States had approximately 85,000 new diagnoses of Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Food insecurity is both a direct and indirect detriment to health outcomes. The rate and risk factors for food insecurity among lymphoma patients are unknown, as the unemployment rate soars far above pre-COVID19 pandemic levels further heightening the economic stresses of a lymphoma diagnosis. METHODS: Data regarding the food security status were obtained from the cross-sectional National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nutritional status of human T-lymphotropic virus 1 patients: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The nutritional status of people with human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1) infection has been poorly described because it involves a neglected disease. The few studies that have been conducted mostly involve people with neurologic consequences and the possible clinical evolutions of the disease. The aim of this study was to describe the nutritional status of patients with HTLV-1, including those with associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, and to evaluate food security in these patients. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted in people with HT

"Nothing is going to change three months from now": A mixed methods characterization of food bank use in Greater Vancouver.

North American food bank use has risen dramatically since the 1980s, and over 850,000 Canadians were estimated to have visited a food bank monthly in 2015. Food banks serve multiple roles in communities, ranging from 'emergency responses' to individualized and short-term experiences of hunger, to 'chronic' supports as part of long-term subsistence strategies. This study used a mixed-methods design to examine the spectrum of food bank user experiences in a large urban context, as part of a community-based project aiming to envision a redesign of the food bank to contribute to broader community

A Framework for Monitoring Contaminants in Decentralized Agricultural Systems: Leveraging Stakeholder Incentives in Low-Resource Settings.

Decentralized agricultural systems (DAS) are essential to food security for millions of people in low-resource settings, yet most existing contaminant monitoring frameworks have been designed for centralized supply chains. This paper proposes a structured framework for integrating contaminant monitoring into DAS by (1) mapping the diverse supply chain structures and stakeholders that constitute these systems; (2) analyzing stakeholder motivations, constraints, and value propositions for monitoring adoption; and (3) identifying efficient monitoring points where these value propositions align wi

Sex trafficking and commercial sex: outcomes in suicide ideation and economic strain among young women.

INTRODUCTION: Documenting the effects of sex trafficking on survivors' health, psychological, and economic needs is pivotal for designing responsive and comprehensive interventions. Although women engaged in commercial sex may be at heightened risk of experiencing sex trafficking, there is limited evidence about how outcomes may differ among women who may be survivors of sex trafficking and those who have not experienced sex trafficking. We examine differences in suicidality, economic strain, food security, and self-efficacy by sex trafficking classification and tested whether economic strain,

Is the level of implementation linked with intervention outcomes? The process evaluation of the Veggie Van intervention to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in underserved communities.

BACKGROUND: The Veggie Van (VV) model is a mobile produce market intervention previously shown to increase fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption among lower-income individuals. Although the model was recently evaluated in a multi-state effectiveness trial, preliminary findings suggested challenges to implementing the model with fidelity. This study examined whether variation in implementation fidelity was associated with participant-level dietary, food security, and market utilization outcomes. METHODS: This study involved a secondary analysis of participant outcome data from a longitudinal R

Applications of environmental DNA (eDNA) in agricultural systems: Current uses, limitations and future prospects.

Global food production, food supply chains and food security are increasingly stressed by human population growth and loss of arable land, becoming more vulnerable to anthropogenic and environmental perturbations. Numerous mutualistic and antagonistic species are interconnected with the cultivation of crops and livestock and these can be challenging to identify on the large scales of food production systems. Accurate identifications to capture this diversity and rapid scalable monitoring are necessary to identify emerging threats (i.e. pests and pathogens), inform on ecosystem health (i.e. soi
