Prediction of foot clearance parameters as a precursor to forecasting the risk of tripping and falling.

Tripping and falling is a serious health problem for older citizens due to the high medical costs incurred and the high mortality rates precipitated mostly by hip fractures that do not heal well. Current falls prevention technology encompasses a broad range of interventions; both passive (e.g., safer environments, hip protectors) and active (e.g., sensor-based fall detectors) which attempt to reduce the effects of tripping and falling. However the majority of these interventions minimizes the impact of falls and do not directly reduce the risk of falling. This paper investigates the prediction

Reliability of forecasts of annoyance reactions. A study of exposure to noise and air pollution.

Studies of the effect of external environmental factors on the individual are often carried out in order to obtain a basis for forecasts. The aim of the case studies reported has been to check the reliability of predictions of annoyance from four different external sources of discomfort. The results confirm the assumption that forecasts based on empirical studies provide a reliable picture of what the occurrence and extent of the annoyance reactions will be.

Comorbidity sequence, sex, and APOE-genotype forecast Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a highly heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia characterized by the progressive accumulation of non-modifiable (age, female sex, APOE-ε4 genotype) and modifiable factors [hypertension (HTN), diabetes, obesity (OB), hyperlipidemia (HLP), depression (DEP)]. However, the temporal sequencing and interaction patterns between comorbidity burden and biological subgroups defined by sex and APOE genotype remain not fully understood. METHODS: We applied the Cumulative Event Method (CEM), a novel process mining framework, to

Enhancing epidemic forecast usability for policymakers: A global mixed-methods study.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical gaps in the generation, interpretation, and use of epidemic forecasts for public health decision-making. We conducted a global mixed-methods study combining an online survey (n = 143, from 46 countries across all World Bank income groups) with 13 semi-structured interviews to examine how epidemic forecasts were perceived, used, and communicated by stakeholders involved in COVID-19 policy dialogues. Survey responses were analysed descriptively, stratified by country income group, while interview transcripts were analysed thematically using the Framework Me

Economic burden of breast cancer in India, 2000-2021 and forecast to 2030.

Background Breast cancer represents a significant public health concern in India, accounting for 28% of all cancer diagnoses and imposing a substantial economic burden. This study introduces a novel approach to forecasting the number of breast cancer cases (based on prevalence rates) and estimating the associated economic impact in India using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. Methods Data on the prevalence of breast cancer in India from 2000 to 2021 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database. This dataset provided annual estimates of the number of

Trends and forecasts of the prevalence and mortality of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in China.

BACKGROUND: As one of the most aging populations in the world, China has experienced a continuous increase in the disease burden of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and other dementia (ADRD). This study aims to analyze the trends in prevalence and mortality rates of AD and related dementia in China from 1990 to 2021 and to predict the disease burden by 2040. METHODS: Data was extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021). Joinpoint regression was used to identify significant changes in trends, while Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models were applied to disentangle age, period, and cohort

Improving influenza forecast in the tropics and subtropics: a case study of Hong Kong.

Influenza forecasts could aid public health response as shown for temperate regions, but such efforts are more challenging in the tropics and subtropics due to more irregular influenza activities. Here, we built six forecast approaches for influenza in the (sub)tropics, with six model forms designed to model seasonal infection risk (i.e. seasonality) based on the dependence of virus survival on climate conditions and to flexibly account for immunity waning. We ran the models jointly with the ensemble adjustment Kalman filter to generate retrospective forecasts of influenza incidence in subtrop

Forecasting the concentration of the components of the particulate matter in Poland using neural networks.

Air pollution is a significant global challenge with profound impacts on human health and the environment. Elevated concentrations of various air pollutants contribute to numerous premature deaths each year. In Europe, and particularly in Poland, air quality remains a critical concern due to pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), which pose serious risks to public health and ecological systems. Effective control of PM emissions and accurate forecasting of their concentrations are essential for improving air quality and supporting public health interventions. This paper presents four advan

A Framework for Evaluating the Use of Surveillance Systems for Short-Term Influenza Forecasting.

BACKGROUND: Public health surveillance systems need to monitor influenza activity and guide measures to mitigate its high impact on morbidity, mortality and healthcare systems. There is an increasing expectation that surveillance data will support the modeling of future short-term disease scenarios using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This study examines how influenza surveillance can support AI/ML-based short-term forecasting for influenza at the community and hospital levels in a high-income country setting (Aotearoa/New Zealand). METHODS: This study used a two-phas

Machine Learning for Short-term Seizure Forecast Using Neonatal EEG.

We propose a novel machine-learning method for continuous short-term seizure forecast by neonatal electroencephalogram (EEG) recorded in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The proposed model was based on an Adaptive Boosting classifier, and supported by 22 features extracted from short-time segmented EEG. The proposed method is trained/tested on three datasets (two open datasets and one privately) recorded from 148 neonates with a diversity of gestation periods (late preterm and full-term) and diagnoses (dominantly present hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy HIE infants). The achieved perfor

Value of the Hyomental Distance Measured With Ultrasound in Forecasting Difficult Laryngoscopy in Newborns.

PURPOSE: Preoperative evaluations of difficult airways are imperative, especially in newborns. The hyomental distance is a reliable index for predicting difficult airways in adults. However, few studies have evaluated the value of the hyomental distance for predicting difficult airways in newborns. It is unclear whether the hyomental distance forecasts a restricted or difficult view when using direct laryngoscopy. We intended to develop an effective system for predicting difficult tracheal intubation in newborns. DESIGN: A prospective observational clinical study. METHODS: Newborns aged 0 to

A Decision-Tree Approach to Assist in Forecasting the Outcomes of the Neonatal Brain Injury.

Neonatal brain injury or neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is a significant morbidity and mortality factor in preterm and full-term newborns. NE has an incidence in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 per 1000 live births carrying a considerable burden for neurological outcomes such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, cognitive impairments, and hydrocephaly. Many scoring systems based on different risk factor combinations in regression models have been proposed to predict abnormal outcomes. Birthweight, gestational age, Apgar scores, pH, ultrasound and MRI biomarkers, seizures onset, EEG pattern, and seizure duration
