BACKGROUND: Molar incisor pattern periodontitis (MIPP) poses many challenges in the field of periodontics. Emerging evidence has shown promising results in regenerative therapy while treating such a patient population. The present case study demonstrates an effective implementation of recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (rh-PDGF) for the successful regeneration of infrabony defects associated with MIPP.
METHODS: A 17-year-old African-American male patient presented to the Periodontics Clinic at Nova Southeastern University, requiring periodontal evaluation prior to the initiation

BACKGROUND: Assessing radiographic bone condition is important for periodontal diagnosis. The accuracy of radiographic interpretation depends highly on a clinician's experience and knowledge. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based online platform that aids clinicians in diagnosing periodontitis based on periapical radiographs and to evaluate the platform's usability using a validated survey.
METHODS: An end-to-end deep learning-based platform was developed to measure radiographic bone loss (RBL), identify furcation involvement, and suggest a case-level periodontal diagnosis from pe

Palato-radicular groove (PRG) is a common developmental anomaly of maxillary incisors, whereas PRG associated with a birooted maxillary incisor is relatively infrequent. The clinical significance of PRG is related to the incidence of localized periodontitis with or without pulpal pathosis, depending on the depth, extent, and complexity of the groove. Successful treatments of PRG in single-rooted incisors have been reported in the literature. However, treatment of PRG in birooted incisors has often been ineffective. This case report describes a pulpal-periodontal combined lesion occurring on a

BACKGROUND: Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) has the potential to promote periodontal regeneration, which is one of the goals of periodontal surgery. While many successful reports of periodontal regeneration using barrier membranes exist in the literature, considerable heterogeneity of GTR outcomes is more typical of current reports. The reasons for this variability are numerous, but could be attributed to differences in surgical skills and case selection. There is a need for a current analysis of the factors affecting success and the formation of evidence-based treatment guidelines for GTR.

BACKGROUND: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) is believed to be capable of inducing periodontal regeneration. However, the risk of aberrant healing events, such as root resorption and ankylosis, has been reported. We hypothesized that implantation of BMP-containing carriers directly on the root planed surface may be the cause of unfavorable healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of a 1 mm spacer membrane, which separated the rhBMP-2 in polymer-coated gelatin sponge (PGS) and the root surface, on periodontal regeneration of experimentally induced

BACKGROUND: Regeneration of tooth-supporting structures destroyed by periodontitis is a major goal of periodontal therapy. Periodontal tissue engineering utilizing growth and amelogenin-like factors (GAFs) applies advances in materials science and biology to regenerate alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum. Amelogenin-like factors (e.g., enamel matrix derivative [EMD]) and growth factors (e.g., platelet-derived growth factor [PDGF] and bone morphogenetic proteins [BMPs, also considered morphogens]) have demonstrated pleotrophic effects on the stimulation of several key events requi

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) could be a promising modality to help augment alveolar bone in periodontal tissue regeneration by bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs).
METHODS: Expanded BMMSCs and atelocollagen (Col) were mixed together (MSC/Col). A combination of β-TCP with MSC/Col was also prepared (MSC/Col/TCP). MSC/Col/TCP or MSC/Col was transplanted into experimental periodontal Class III furcation defects that had been exposed to inflammation in beagle dogs. Periodontal tissue regeneration was evaluated by histologic and

Tooth is made of an enamel-covered crown and a cementum-covered root. Studies on crown dentin formation have been a major focus in tooth development for several decades. Interestingly, the population prevalence for genetic short root anomaly (SRA) with no apparent defects in crown is close to 1.3%. Furthermore, people with SRA itself are predisposed to root resorption during orthodontic treatment. The discovery of the unique role of Nfic (nuclear factor I C; a transcriptional factor) in controlling root but not crown dentin formation points to a new concept: tooth crown and root have different

BACKGROUND: The healing process of autotransplantation puts 2 different tissues in competition: the ligament on the root surface and the bone tissue of the alveolus. This study shows the effects of a protocol with 2 surgical stages, which promote ligament repair, inhibit adhesion between bone and dental root, and reduce the occurrence of the ankylosis-root resorption phenomenon.
METHODS: Forty-three patients, 33 to 73 years old, received 47 transplantations of mature teeth (including retained teeth) during a 5-year period. During the first surgical step, the transplanted tooth is extracted, m

BACKGROUND: Although hyaluronic acid (HA) has long been used for many medical applications, only in recent years has it gained greater popularity in the field of periodontics because of its biological effects during wound healing. Even today, most clinicians are not aware that more than one type of HA exists and that the extent of its biological functions may vary depending upon the particular characteristics of the biomolecule itself.
AIM: To review and synthesize the current preclinical and clinical evidence on the biological effects and therapeutic applications of HA in periodontology, wit

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the change in clinical tooth mobility following scaling and root planing (SRP) and to identify baseline factors predictive of the 12-month outcome.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized de-identified electronic health records from the BigMouth Dental Data Repository. The final cohort consisted of 152 patients, contributing 489 teeth with baseline mobility of Class 1, 2, or 3. The primary outcome was the change in mobility class at 12 months. A multilevel cumulative link model (ordinal logistic regression) was used to determine the association between baseli

A treatment option for managing furcation invasions is root amputation. Long-term survival of resected molars requires a complete harmony of sequential endodontic, periodontic, restorative and maintenance procedures. The main objective of this article is to provide a concise historical perspective of this procedure and to review available literature regarding its efficacy and limitations. It also illustrates a current modification of the procedure using guided bone regeneration (GBR) and socket preservation to eliminate some of the potential disadvantages of the traditional root amputation pro

Four hundred and fifty-five teeth that were judged clinically to have a questionable prognosis were observed over a 40-year span in 166 patients in a private practice. Therapy initially was debridement with oral hygiene instruction, followed by flap curettage procedures and preventive maintenance recall therapy. An assessment of compliance based on oral hygiene and recall attendance was also performed. A total of 55 (12%) teeth were lost with an average survival rate of 8.8 years prior to extraction. No teeth were lost during the first 2 years of observation. The majority of extracted teeth we
