Deciphering the effects of historical and recent demographic processes responsible for the spatial patterns of genetic diversity and structure is a key objective in evolutionary and conservation biology. Using population genetic analyses, we investigated the demographic history, the contemporary genetic diversity and structure, and the occurrence of hybridization and introgression of two species of anadromous fish with contrasting life history strategies and which have undergone recent demographic declines, the allis shad (Alosa alosa) and the twaite shad (Alosa fallax). We genotyped 706 indiv

The process of species formation is characterized by the accumulation of multiple reproductive barriers. The evolution of hybrid male sterility, or Haldane's rule, typically characterizes later stages of species formation, when reproductive isolation is strongest. Yet, understanding how quickly reproductive barriers evolve and their consequences for maintaining genetic boundaries between emerging species remains a challenging task because it requires studying taxa that hybridize in nature. Here, we address these questions using the meadow grasshopper Pseudochorthippus parallelus, where populat

Along with manipulating habitat, the direct release of domesticated individuals into the wild is a practice used worldwide to augment wildlife populations. We test between possible outcomes of human-mediated secondary contact using genomic techniques at both historical and contemporary timescales for two iconic duck species. First, we sequence several thousand ddRAD-seq loci for contemporary mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) throughout North America and two domestic mallard types (i.e., known game-farm mallards and feral Khaki Campbell's). We show that North American mallards may well be becoming

Species introductions promote secondary contacts between taxa with long histories of allopatric divergence. Anthropogenic contact zones thus offer valuable contrasts to speciation studies in natural systems where past spatial isolations may have been brief or intermittent. Investigations of anthropogenic hybridization are rare for marine animals, which have high fecundity and high dispersal ability, characteristics that contrast to most terrestrial animals. Genomic studies indicate that gene flow can still occur after millions of years of divergence, as illustrated by invasive mussels and tuni

BACKGROUND: Regulatory CD4+ T cells (Tregs) exhibit functional alterations in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is a key regulator of Treg development and function.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine whether the expression of functionally relevant TGF-β-regulated molecules is altered in Tregs from patients with MS.
METHODS: Expression of nine Treg markers was analyzed by multi-color flow cytometry in CD4+ T cells and Treg subpopulations of 31 untreated MS patients and age- and sex-matched healthy donors (HDs). Correlations between T

BACKGROUND: In modern dairy breeding programmes, high contributions from foreign sires are nearly always present. Genotyping, and therefore genomic selection (GS), concern only a subpopulation of the breeding programme's wider dairy population. These features of a breeding programme contribute in different ways to the rate of genetic gain for the wider industry.
METHODS: A deterministic recursive gene flow model across subpopulations of animals in a dairy industry was created to predict the commercial performance of replacement heifers and future artificial insemination bulls. Various breedin

BACKGROUND: Keloids are pathological scars. There is a genetic predisposition for keloids, and the molecular events associated with keloid need to be profiled.
METHODS: This study used whole-genome RNA-Seq to analyze aberrant gene expression between 17 keloid and 8 normal skin samples at the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, followed by comprehensive bioinformatic analysis.
RESULTS: RNA-Seq revealed 2610 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with FDR < 0.01, and RT-qPCR verified selected 13 DEGs. Principal component analysis using Partek Flow revealed distinct gene expression

Small, isolated populations are vulnerable to loss of genetic diversity through in-breeding and genetic drift. Sylvatic plague due to infection by the bacterium Yersinia pestis caused an epizootic in the early 1990s resullting in declines and extirpations of many black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in north-central Montana, USA. Plague-induced population bottlenecks may contribute to significant reductions in genetic variability. In contrast, gene flow maintains genetic variability within colonies. We investigated the impacts of the plague epizootic and distance to nearest

Flow regimes strongly influence fish reproduction, yet how water velocity shapes gonadal development at the molecular level remains unclear. We examined juvenile Acrossocheilus fasciatus, a stream cyprinid, under static (0 BL s-1) and high-flow (4 BL s-1) conditions for 30 days in a recirculating system. Growth and gonadosomatic indices showed upward trends in flow but no significant differences, and histology revealed comparable gonadal stages. In contrast, transcriptome analysis revealed pronounced sex-specific responses. In ovaries, differentially expressed genes were enriched in cytoskelet

Speciation in marine taxa is dynamic and complex, often occurring in the absence of absolute geographic barriers to gene flow. Boobies comprise a clade of seven highly mobile seabird species with high diversity in the eastern Pacific Ocean, where no land barriers separate extant sister species and hybridization is widespread. They exhibit striking diversity in bare-part coloration, an important signal of mate quality, and possess a novel multiple sex chromosome system (Z1Z2Z1Z2 / Z1Z2W), likely resulting from a fusion between an ancestral autosomal microchromosome and the W chromosome. Genetic diversity and population structure of seven populations of Schistosoma mansoni sampled in Kenya were assessed using five microsatellite markers. The mean number of alleles per locus, expected heterozygosity in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and pairwise F(ST) values ranged from 5.2 to 10.7, 0.5-0.8 and 3.6-27.3%, respectively. These data reveal that S. mansoni populations in Kenyan have relatively high levels of genetic diversity and is significantly differentiated. Our data combined with information on biogeography support the hypothesis that the strong genetic structure in Kenyan schisto

UNLABELLED: Understanding the evolutionary history of recent rapidly radiating groups remains a major challenge in systematics, especially when incomplete reproductive isolation and rampant interspecific gene flow obscure phylogenetic signal. Here, we present a comprehensive phylogenomic study of the genus Castilleja ("the paintbrushes", Orobanchaceae), integrating nuclear and chloroplast data to investigate patterns of diversification, hybridization, and geographic structure across its range. Our results provide the first evidence that Castilleja functions as a multicompartmentalized syngameo

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is an important vector of arboviral diseases, transmitting yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika. Monitoring its population genetic diversity and genetic differentiation has become essential for the control of infectious disease epidemics, especially in the functional areas of ports of entry. Population genetic monitoring of Ae. albopictus in the port area can help in the monitoring of port mosquito invasions and establishing port sanitary and quarantine measures to prevent the introduction and transmission of vector-borne diseases.

The research of fungal biodiversity is important under global climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems. The most studies focusing on fungal biogeography oriented on species richness. There is a short supply researches on how genetic diversity shifts along a longitudinal gradient within one species. Model fungi with well-characterized genomes and simple cultivation requirements allow detailed research of evolutionary and ecological processes. The aim was to study the genetic profile transformation of the Schizophyllum commune populations by DNA microsatellite loci alon

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tools showing best conservation practices are becoming critical for rare plant conservation as populations become isolated through habitat fragmentation and changing ecosystem processes. We illustrate the importance of reintroduction and assisted gene flow, using reintroduction of the USA federally threatened Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), a monocarpic perennial endemic to the western Great Lakes sand dunes. We evaluate the success of experimental reintroductions of this species into its dynamic coastal environment and address fundamental issues for rare plant reint

The Quaternary period was marked by significant climatic and sea-level fluctuations that had a strong impact on coastal ecosystems worldwide. Sea-level changes played a key role in the formation of restinga ecosystems along the Brazilian coast. These Quaternary sandy beach-dune deposits support unique ecosystems, characterized by their recent origin, constant environmental dynamics, and strong influence of saline, aeolian, and solar factors. The lizards Tropidurus hygomi, Glaucomastix abaetensis, and Glaucomastix itabaianensis are endemic and sympatric species found in restinga formations alon

The fall armyworm is a major agricultural pest of corn and multiple other crops. A native of the Western Hemisphere it is now a global concern after its discovery in Africa in 2016 and subsequent infestations in Asia and Australia. A defining characteristic of fall armyworm is its capacity for long distance migration, first documented for populations in North America and assumed to occur elsewhere. This trait increases the risk that phenotypes harmful to agriculture, such as pesticide resistance, that arise in one location can rapidly disseminate to even geographically distant populations. Thi

Bos taurus (taurine) and Bos indicus (indicine) cattle diverged at least 150,000 years ago and, since that time, substantial genomic differences have evolved between the two lineages. During the last two millennia, genetic exchange in Africa has resulted in a complex tapestry of taurine-indicine ancestry, with most cattle populations exhibiting varying levels of admixture. Similarly, there are several Southern European cattle populations that also show evidence for historical gene flow from indicine cattle, the highest levels of which are found in the Central Italian White breeds. Here we use

Speciation can be initiated by adaptive divergence between populations in ecologically different habitats, but how sexually based reproductive barriers contribute to this process is less well understood. We here test for sexual isolation between ecotypes of threespine stickleback fish residing in adjacent lake and stream habitats in the Lake Constance basin, Central Europe. Mating trials exposing females to pairings of territorial lake and stream males in outdoor mesocosms allowing for natural reproductive behaviour reveal that mating occurs preferentially between partners of the same ecotype.

The aim of this in vivo study was to determine the existence of muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) in rat corpus cavernosum. Immunohistochemical and RT-PCR analyses were performed to determine the expression of the stem cell markers (Sca-1, Oct4, and desmin) in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats in different age groups (10 rats in each group). Sca-1 was mainly expressed in blood vessels and cavernous sinus and demonstrated primarily cytoplasmic staining. Desmin was expressed mainly in muscle tissues and staining occurred mainly in the cytoplasm but also partially in the nucleus. An extremely small amount
