Effects of methsuximide and mephenytoin on the responding of pigeons under a fixed-consecutive-number schedule with and without an external discriminative stimulus.

The effects of the antiepilepsy drugs methsuximide and mephenytoin were examined in pigeons responding under a fixed-consecutive-number (FCN) schedule with and without an added external discriminative stimulus. On this schedule, food was delivered whenever subjects responded between 8 and 12 times on one response key (work key), and then responded once on a second response key (reinforcement key). Under one variant of the FCN schedule (FCN 8-SD), an external discriminative stimulus signalled completion of the response requirement on the work key; no such stimulus change occurred under the othe

Integration time for the perception of depth from motion parallax.

The perception of depth from relative motion is believed to be a slow process that "builds-up" over a period of observation. However, in the case of motion parallax, the potential accuracy of the depth estimate suffers as the observer translates during the viewing period. Our recent quantitative model for the perception of depth from motion parallax proposes that relative object depth (d) can be determined from retinal image motion (dθ/dt), pursuit eye movement (dα/dt), and fixation distance (f) by the formula: d/f≈dθ/dα. Given the model's dynamics, it is important to know the integration time

Memory reacquisition deficit: Chicks fail to relearn pharmacologically disrupted associative response.

It is generally assumed that if memory is disrupted by pharmacological inhibitors during its consolidation, it can be later acquired afresh. In our experiments, we trained day-old chicks in a one-trial passive avoidance task and interfered with memory formation using protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin or NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801. Second training was then given to amnestic animals with either the same conditioning stimulus (retraining) or a new one (novel training). Retraining with the same stimulus failed to produce efficient memory at all the examined between-training and training-

Neural Correlates of Affective Stimulus Evaluation: A Case-by-Case Analysis.

A recent study provided first evidence that neural correlates of affective stimulus evaluation, that is, the early posterior negativity (EPN) and late positive potential (LPP), can be assessed at the individual case level. Expanding the case-by-case approach, the main aim of the present study was to explore the process of affective stimulus evaluation within the individual participant with respect to multiple emotional stimulus classes. Towards this end, each participant viewed separate blocks of low and high arousing pictures from behavior systems of predator fear, disease avoidance, and sexu

Stimulus history reliably shapes action potential waveforms of cortical neurons.

Action potentials have been shown to shunt synaptic charge to a degree that depends on their waveform. In this way, they participate in synaptic integration, and thus in the probability of generating succeeding action potentials, in a shape-dependent way. Here we test whether the different action potential waveforms produced during dynamical stimulation in a single cortical neuron carry information about the conductance stimulus history. When pyramidal neurons in rat visual cortex were driven by a conductance stimulus that resembles natural synaptic input, somatic action potential waveforms sh

Sensitivity of unanesthetized chinchilla auditory system to noise burst onset, and the effects of carboplatin.

The gross near-field responses of the auditory nerve and inferior colliculus to noise burst stimuli were recorded through intracranially implanted electrodes in six unanesthetized chinchillas. Responses were studied as a function of stimulus plateau amplitude and rise time, both before and after a systemic dose of 75 mg/kg of carboplatin. Both recording sites showed sensitivity to stimulus level and rise time. Increases in stimulus level and decreases in stimulus rise time each produced increases in the response magnitude, and decreases in response latency. When the stimuli were re-specified a

Characterization of the Discriminative Stimulus Effects of a NOP Receptor Agonist Ro 64-6198 in Rhesus Monkeys.

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOP) agonists have been reported to produce antinociceptive effects in rhesus monkeys with comparable efficacy to μ-opioid receptor (MOP) agonists, but without their limiting side effects. There are also known to be species differences between rodents and nonhuman primates (NHPs) in the behavioral effects of NOP agonists. The aims of this study were the following: 1) to determine if the NOP agonist Ro 64-6198 could be trained as a discriminative stimulus; 2) to evaluate its pharmacological selectivity as a discriminative stimulus; and 3) to establish the order

Comparison of LS CE-Chirp and Click Stimuli in Auditory Brainstem Responses in High-Frequency Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an evoked potential used to estimate the hearing thresholds and identify potential auditory pathologies. Although a click stimulus is generally used as an auditory stimulus in diagnostics, recent reports show that the Level-Specific CE-Chirp (LS CE-Chirp) stimulus can also be used for clinical diagnosis. In this study, we compared the auditory brainstem test outcomes of the LS CE-Chirp stimulus and the click stimulus in individuals with high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL). DESIGN: Patients with HFHL (n = 30) and individuals with normal heari

Approaches to brain stress testing: BOLD magnetic resonance imaging with computer-controlled delivery of carbon dioxide.

BACKGROUND: An impaired vascular response in the brain regionally may indicate reduced vascular reserve and vulnerability to ischemic injury. Changing the carbon dioxide (CO(2)) tension in arterial blood is commonly used as a cerebral vasoactive stimulus to assess the cerebral vascular response, changing cerebral blood flow (CBF) by up to 5-11 percent/mmHg in normal adults. Here we describe two approaches to generating the CO(2) challenge using a computer-controlled gas blender to administer: i) a square wave change in CO(2) and, ii) a ramp stimulus, consisting of a continuously graded change

Abnormal saccadic eye movements in autistic children.

The saccadic eye movements, generated during a visual oddball task, of autistic children, normal children, children with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADDH), and dyslexic children were examined to determine whether autistic children differed from these other groups in saccadic frequency. Autistic children made more saccades during the presentation of frequent stimuli (than normals and ADDH children), and between stimulus presentations. Also, unlike the normal and dyslexic groups, their saccadic frequency did not depend on stimulus type. This abnormal pattern of saccades may neg

Somatosensory influence on auditory cortical potentials for self-generated sounds during a loudness discrimination task.

Auditory attenuation of self-generated sounds is often attributed to motor prediction based on motor commands. Our previous study (Endo et al., 2025) demonstrated that somatosensory inputs also interact with auditory processing during a rhythmic finger tapping sound generation task. The current study further investigated the mechanism underlying this auditory-somatosensory interaction. We recorded auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) during a loudness discrimination task involving self-generated sounds, which were generated by discrete finger tapping movements pressing on a virtual object

Artistic-Value Descriptions Are Associated with Higher Aesthetic Ratings than Social-Value Descriptions for AI-Generated Variants of Classical Paintings.

Contextual meaning can influence art evaluation even when viewers encounter images within a structured visual stimulus family. This exploratory questionnaire-version study examined whether value-oriented textual descriptions were associated with aesthetic ratings of AI-generated variants of classical paintings in three Chinese-language questionnaire versions emphasising cultural value, artistic value, or social value. The available dataset contained 61 participants, each rating 40 images on a 1-10 aesthetic scale, yielding 2440 complete observations. A post hoc three-rater manipulation check o

Voluntary action influences visual competition.

Converging lines of evidence point to a strong link between action and perception. In this study, we show that this linkage plays a role in controlling the dynamics of binocular rivalry, in which two stimuli compete for perceptual awareness. Observers dichoptically viewed two dynamic rival stimuli while moving a computer mouse with one hand. When the motion of one rival stimulus was consistent with observers' own hand movements, dominance durations of that stimulus were extended and, remarkably, suppression durations of that stimulus were abbreviated. Additional measurements revealed that this

Is the behavioural effect of diazepam in rats unique to negative secondary stimuli?

Studies of the behavioural effects of benzodiazepines have focused in particular on situations with negative secondary stimuli, i.e., stimuli signalling negative primary events such as punishment or non-reward. The general result is that benzodiazepines attenuate behavioural reactions to this type of stimuli. The aim of the present study was to investigate if there are any differences between positive and negative secondary stimuli in this respect. Rats were treated with diazepam in a modified Skinner box with two levers. One of the levers always gave a small reward. A lamp being ON or OFF was

Spectral Ripples in Round-Window Cochlear Microphonics: Evidence for Multiple Generation Mechanisms.

The cochlear microphonic (CM) results from the vector sum of outer hair cell transduction currents excited by a stimulus. The classical theory of CM generation-that the response measured at the round window is dominated by cellular sources located within the tail region of the basilar membrane (BM) excitation pattern-predicts that CM amplitude and phase vary little with stimulus frequency. Contrary to expectations, CM amplitude and phase-gradient delay measured in response to low-level tones in chinchillas demonstrate a striking, quasiperiodic pattern of spectral ripples, even at frequencies >

Pivotal roles of melanopsin containing retinal ganglion cells in pupillary light reflex in photopic conditions.

The pupillary light reflex (PLR) is crucial for protecting the retina from excess light. The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in the retina are neurons that are critical to generating the PLR, receiving rod/cone photoreceptor signals and directly sensing light through melanopsin. Previous studies have investigated the roles of photoreceptors and ipRGCs in PLR using genetically-modified mouse models. Herein, we acutely ablated photoreceptors using N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNU) to examine the roles of ipRGCs in the PLR. We conducted PLR and multiple electrode array (ME

Stimulus-induced behavior in F1 hybrids of seizure-sensitive and seizure-resistant gerbils.

We previously established two strains of Mongolian gerbil: a seizure-sensitive strain, established by selective inbreeding for motor seizures elicited by a stimulus called the S method and a seizure-resistant strain that does not exhibit inducible seizures. The behavior of the seizure-sensitive strain is characterized by a progressive increase in responsiveness to weekly application of the S method, from repetitive backward ear movements appearing after postnatal day 40, to a full-blown seizure, while the seizure-resistant strain is apparently unaffected by the stimulation. The difference betw

Buses, cars, bicycles and walkers: the influence of the type of human transport on the flight responses of waterbirds.

One way to manage disturbance to waterbirds in natural areas where humans require access is to promote the occurrence of stimuli for which birds tolerate closer approaches, and so cause fewer responses. We conducted 730 experimental approaches to 39 species of waterbird, using five stimulus types (single walker, three walkers, bicycle, car and bus) selected to mimic different human management options available for a controlled access, Ramsar-listed wetland. Across species, where differences existed (56% of 25 cases), motor vehicles always evoked shorter flight-initiation distances (FID) than h

Disruptions to human speed perception induced by motion adaptation and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

To investigate the underlying nature of the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on speed perception, we applied repetitive TMS (rTMS) to human V5/MT+ following adaptation to either fast- (20 deg/s) or slow (4 deg/s)-moving grating stimuli. The adapting stimuli induced changes in the perceived speed of a standard reference stimulus moving at 10 deg/s. In the absence of rTMS, adaptation to the slower stimulus led to an increase in perceived speed of the reference, whilst adaptation to the faster stimulus produced a reduction in perceived speed. These induced changes in speed perce

Objective audiometry with DPOAEs : New findings for generation mechanisms and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are sound waves generated as byproducts of the cochlear amplifier. These are measurable in the auditory canal and represent an objective method for diagnosing functional disorders of the inner ear. Conventional DPOAE and TEOAE methods permit detection of hearing impairment, but with less than desirable accuracy. OBJECTIVE: By accounting for DPOAE generation mechanisms, the aim is to improve the accuracy of inner-ear diagnosis. METHODS: DPOAEs consist of two components, which emer
