Supportive care in cancer : official journal of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer2025eng
PURPOSE: Psychological distress among cancer patients is linked to adverse outcomes. The enhanced Distress Thermometer (eDT) allows patients to self-report distress levels on a Likert scale (0-10) and select from a list of physical, emotional, family, and psychological problems contributing to their distress. The physical problem list includes symptoms and functional impairments. Little is known about the predictive validity of the eDT physical problem list. This study aims to evaluate predictors of risk associated with distress scores measured by the eDT among patients with physical problems.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is the leading cause of disability and death among children in the United States. Optimal outcomes are achieved at pediatric trauma centers (PTCs), which are specialized to address the unique needs of this population. Disparities in trauma have been reported, affecting optimal delivery of care. This study aims to investigate disparities in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transport of pediatric and adolescent trauma patients and the factors influencing destination decisions.
METHODS: This study utilized data from the National Emergency Medical Services Information System

PURPOSE: Socio-demographic inequities in mental health were magnified by COVID-19, with women experiencing greater household burden with less support in Canada and globally. While some health patterns during COVID-19 have been observed globally, there is a research gap in rural mental health during COVID-19 in Canada. We hypothesize there is a disparity in mental health decline during COVID-19 between men and women.
METHODS: In rural Ontario, mental health was measured through a survey of approximately 18,000 individuals living in seven counties. In 2021, survey respondents were asked to rate

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma are protozoa parasites that infect animals and can cause economic losses in cattle production. Trypanosoma live in the blood and are transmitted by hematophagous insects, such as flies in the genus Tabanus. Using ecological niche models, we explored the current geography of six common Tabanus species in Brazil, which are considered vectors of Trypanosoma vivax and Tr. evansi in the Neotropics.
METHODS: We used georeferenced data and biotic and abiotic variables integrated using a fundamental ecological niche modeling approach. Modeling results from six Tabanus species

In this manuscript, we review the epidemiology of movement disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD), atypical parkinsonism, essential tremor, dystonia, functional movement disorders, tic disorders, chorea, and ataxias. We emphasize age-, sex-, and geography-based incidence and prevalence, as well as notable trends including the rising incidence and prevalence of PD. Given the growing global interest in refining clinical diagnostic skills in recognizing movement disorders, we highlight some key epidemiological findings that may be of interest to clinicians and health systems tasked with dia

American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2019eng
The imbalance between supply and demand of organs for transplant will not be fully solved by changes to the allocation system. Improved organ donation and utilization must be accomplished through critical reassessment of organ procurement organization (OPO) performance as a partnership between transplant centers, OPOs, and community hospitals. The continued discussion on changes to the organ distribution system should be based on patient-centeredness, enhanced transparency, improved models, and metrics. Focusing too heavily on geography without consideration for the other factors at play risks

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are common clinical syndromes diagnosed in the absence of biochemical, structural, or metabolic abnormalities. They account for significant morbidity and health care expenditures and are identifiable across variable age, geography, and culture. Etiology of abdominal pain associated FGIDs, including functional dyspepsia (FD), remains incompletely understood, but growing evidence implicates the importance of visceral hypersensitivity and electromechanical dysfunction. This manuscript explores data supporting the role of visceral hypersensitivity and e

This article traces the travels of the Scottish physician Archibald Smith through the Peruvian Andes between the 1820s and 1860s. Despite his prominent role in the nineteenth-century Peruvian medical scene, almost nothing has been written on Archibald Smith. By exploring Smith's medical activities, publications, and debates, this article intends to uncover unexplored areas of Peruvian medical history, such as the animosity between local and foreign physicians during the post-Independence war era and the important role played by medical geography as a scientific discipline for redefining ethnic

At Tansen Mission Hospital in the middle hill area of Nepal the 4-year discharge data base was surveyed for amputations due to thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). An incidence of 693/100,000 admissions was found. This is 50 times higher than the North American incidence. We investigated causative factors by means of in-depth interviews about genetic background, life style, diet and geography. In addition to tobacco use which was 100%, we found only extreme poverty, a diet of mostly maize, and residence in the Himalayan foothills as consistent co-factors.

BACKGROUND: Among accepted US heart organs, listing centers accept organ offers earliest for White women, followed by Black women, White men, and Black men. Understanding the relationships of center- and geographic-level decisions is necessary to understand waitlist disparities. We sought to determine whether listing center and geography are associated with the first heart organ acceptance by candidate race, since race demographics vary regionally across the United States.
METHODS: Using the United Network for Organ Sharing data sets, we identified first organ offers for Black and White candi

OBJECTIVE: Encephalitis, myelitis, and encephalomyelitis are serious neuroinflammatory disorders with considerable mortality. This study aims to analyze U.S. mortality trends for these conditions from 1999 to 2020, examining variations across demographic groups, geography, and urbanization levels to identify evolving patterns and risk factors.
METHODS: A retrospective, population-based study used CDC WONDER mortality data. Deaths attributed to encephalitis, myelitis, and encephalomyelitis were identified using ICD-10 code G04. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) were calculated per 100,000 i

Preterm birth (PTB), defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is a significant public health issue, with implications for newborns, families, and society. The residential contexts in which mothers live may, in part, shape their risk of delivering preterm. Although ethnic enclaves-residential settings with a large concentration of people from the same ethnic group-exist within counties, little is known about how different county contexts shape PTB. This national study investigates the association between living in distinct county types and preterm births among Latina mothers (N = 1,084

The aim of this study is to reveal the spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of the static and dynamic distribution of global cruise ships, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed the global cruise network from "lines" to "points". This study collected trajectory data for 292 cruise ships and data for 789 cruise ports worldwide from March 2020 to July 2021. Based on the relationship between port and navigation, port management rights research, and port geography theory, we analyzed the spatial distribution and spatiotemporal migration of cruise s

BACKGROUND: Over 45% of people with HIV (PWH) in the United States at least 50 years old and are at heightened risk of aging-related comorbidities including end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), for which kidney transplant is the optimal treatment. Among ESKD patients, PWH have lower likelihood of waitlisting, a requisite step in the transplant process, than individuals without HIV. It is unknown what proportion of the inequity by HIV status can be explained by demographics, medical characteristics, substance use history, and geography.

Post-fracture care (PFC) programs evaluate and manage patients with a minimal trauma or fragility fracture to prevent subsequent fractures. We conducted a literature review to understand current trends in PFC publications, evaluate key characteristics of PFC programs, and assess their clinical effectiveness, geographic variations, and cost-effectiveness. We performed a search for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2003 and December 2020 listed in PubMed or Google Scholar. We categorized identified articles into 4 non-mutually exclusive PFC subtopics based on keywords and abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) activity has fluctuated in the south-central United States since its introduction. Seasonal outbreaks are common, with three in Oklahoma during 2003, 2007, and 2012. Morbidity and mortality rates vary during each outbreak. Long-term neurologic sequelae in association with West Nile virus disease (WNVD) are well-described, but limited information is available about delayed mortality among acute WNV infection survivors. A retrospective cohort analysis of all confirmed and probable WNVD cases reported to the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) during 2003, 2007, and 2
