The current epidemiology of leishmaniasis in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia and implications for disease emergence in European countries.

Leishmania spp. are sand fly-borne protozoan parasites causing leishmaniasis in humans and animals. The aim of the study was to analyse the epidemiology of leishmaniasis in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia from 2005 to 2020 and evaluate the associated risk for disease emergence in European countries. It is based on an analysis of WHO and OIE reported cases between 2005 and 2020, a review of scientific articles published in SCOPUS between 2009 and 2020 and a questionnaire survey to public health and veterinary authorities in these countries. Endemic Leishmania spp. include L. infantum in the thre

Economic evaluation of the Hepatitis C virus elimination program in the country of Georgia, 2015 to 2017.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In 2015, the country of Georgia launched an elimination program aiming to reduce the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection by 90% from 5.4% prevalence (~150 000 people). During the first 2.5 years of the program, 770 832 people were screened, 48 575 were diagnosed with active HCV infection, and 41 483 patients were treated with direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-based regimens, with a >95% cure rate. METHODS: We modelled the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of HCV screening, diagnosis and treatment between April 2015 and November 2017 compared to no treatm

Real-World Treatment Patterns of Lung Cancer in a Resource-Restricted Country: the Experience of Georgia.

Lung cancer (LC) is the most common malignancy responsible for 1.8 million of deaths worldwide. Lung and bronchus cancer represents 13% (n = 1217) of all new cancer cases in Georgia. In 2018, in Georgian males lung cancer age-standardized incidence rate was 35.7/per 100 000, less compared to regional countries as Turkey (70.6), Russia (48.2), Ukraine (41.7), and Armenia (58.5), but higher than in neighbor Azerbaijan (25.5). Incidence is higher compared to central and eastern Europe (27.3) and near similar to North America (34.5). Georgia is an Eastern European, middleincome country with 3.7 mi

Audit of Early and Late Maternal Deaths in Georgia: Potential for Improving Substandard Obstetric Care.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of care is an important factor in reducing preventable maternal deaths, yet it is a significant challenge in many countries. Substandard and poor quality of care is the leading factor in two-thirds of maternal deaths in European countries. Our study investigated the deaths of all women of reproductive age in 2012 in Georgia. The aim was to define the underlying causes of maternal deaths and to identify the factors in women's care which contributed to the fatal outcomes. METHODS: A national Reproductive Age Mortality Survey was conducted in Georgia in 2014-15. Data from m

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to anthrax and animal care: A case-control study in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Anthrax is endemic in Georgia and recent outbreaks prompted a livestock-handler case-control study with a component to evaluate anthrax knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among livestock handlers or owners. METHODS: Cases were handlers of livestock with confirmed animal anthrax from June 2013-May 2015. Handlers of four matched unaffected animals were selected as controls, two from the same village as the case animal ("village control") and two from 3-10 km away ("area control"). Descriptive statistics were reported and conditional logistic regression was performed to esti

ROLE OF VIRAL PATHOGENS IN INFANTS WITH SYSTEMIC INFECTION AT THE NEWBORN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS IN GEORGIA.

In Georgia, causative agents among infants with systemic infections are generally not identified and "neonatal sepsis" is usually diagnosed and treated without determining the etiology. The objective of this study was to estimate the role of viral pathogens (Herpesviridae and Enteroviruses) among neonates with generalized infections. A cross-sectional study was performed among neonates younger than <8 weeks admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the two largest pediatric hospitals in Tbilisi, Georgia. Laboratory tests were performed by consensus and then by type-specific PCR meth

Regional variations in home canning practices and the risk of foodborne botulism in the Republic of Georgia, 2003.

Foodborne botulism is a severe, paralytic illness caused by ingestion of preformed neurotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum. In 2003, we conducted a population-based household survey of home canning practices to explore marked regional variations in botulism incidence in the Republic of Georgia (ROG). We designed a cluster sampling scheme and subdivided each of the 10 regions of the ROG into a variable number of strata. Households were selected from each stratum using a two-step cluster sampling methodology. We administered a questionnaire about home canning practices to household members

Response to comment on "A complete skull from Dmanisi, Georgia, and the evolutionary biology of early Homo".

Schwartz et al. hold that variation among the Dmanisi skulls reflects taxic diversity. The morphological observations to support their hypothesis, however, are partly incorrect, and not calibrated against intraspecific variation in living taxa. After proper adjustment, Schwartz et al.'s data are fully compatible with the hypothesis of a single paleodeme of early Homo at Dmanisi.

Development and evaluation of alternative approaches for exposure assessment of multiple air pollutants in Atlanta, Georgia.

Measurements from central site (CS) monitors are often used as estimates of exposure in air pollution epidemiological studies. As these measurements are typically limited in their spatiotemporal resolution, true exposure variability within a population is often obscured, leading to potential measurement errors. To fully examine this limitation, we developed a set of alternative daily exposure metrics for each of the 169 ZIP codes in the Atlanta, GA, metropolitan area, from 1999 to 2002, for PM(2.5) and its components (elemental carbon (EC), SO(4)), O(3), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxid

A brucellosis disease control strategy for the Kakheti region of the country of Georgia: an agent-based model.

Brucellosis has been reported in livestock and humans in the country of Georgia with Brucella melitensis as the most common species causing disease. Georgia lacked sufficient data to assess effectiveness of the various potential control measures utilizing a reliable population-based simulation model of animal-to-human transmission of this infection. Therefore, an agent-based model was built using data from previous studies to evaluate the effect of an animal-level infection control programme on human incidence and sheep flock and cattle herd prevalence of brucellosis in the Kakheti region of G

Survival dynamics of fecal bacteria in ponds in agricultural watersheds of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of Georgia.

Animal agriculture in watersheds produces manure bacteria that may contaminate surface waters and put public health at risk. We measured fecal indicator bacteria (commensal Escherichia coli and fecal enterococci) and manure pathogens (Salmonella and E. coli 0157:H7), and physical-chemical parameters in pond inflow, within pond, pond outflow, and pond sediments in three ponds in agricultural watersheds. Bishop Pond with perennial inflow and outflow is located in the Piedmont, and Ponds A and C with ephemeral inflow and outflow in the Coastal Plain of Georgia. Bromide and chloride tracer experim

Is universal screening for lead in children indicated? An analysis of lead results in Augusta, Georgia in 1997.

Pediatricians have a dilemma about whether they should do universal or targeted screening for lead in children. In order to determine whether we should continue our institution's present policy of universal screening, we analyzed 962 lead samples obtained by routine screening in the calendar year 1997, 83 children (8.6%) had elevated levels (over 10 mcg/dl) by capillary samples; of the 57 children who had follow up tests by venipuncture, 35 had abnormal levels making the incidence of elevated leads in our screened children 3.6%. Most of the abnormal levels were in African-American children liv

Pregnancy outcome in renal transplant recipients: experience at the Medical College of Georgia and review of the literature.

Between 1970 and 1982, 13 renal transplant recipients had 17 pregnancies with follow-up at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). Nine patients received related donor grafts and four received cadaver kidneys; 11 mothers survived their pregnancies. Preeclampsia, urinary tract infections, and preterm labor were frequent complications. complications. Perinatal complications were rare, and 12 of 13 continuing pregnancies produced surviving infants. Only one infant had congenital abnormalities (premature closure of the fontanelles and umbilical hernia). We present maternal and neonatal details, with

Factors associated with handwashing behaviour among rural schoolchildren: a cross-sectional study in Georgia, 2024.

BACKGROUND: Handwashing is a critical measure for reducing diarrhoeal and respiratory infections among school-aged children, yet maintaining consistent practice remains a challenge. Behavioural factors, including daily routines, environmental cues, and perceptions of hygiene spaces, shape handwashing behaviour beyond the availability of water and soap. This study examined the behavioural determinants of handwashing among rural schoolchildren in Georgia using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2024 among 368 stude

Gender trends in youth tobacco and nicotine use in Georgia across GYTS rounds, 2014-23.

Adolescent tobacco and nicotine product (TNP) use remains a public health concern, with emerging gender convergence and rising e-cigarette use among females. We examined gender-specific trends in Georgian adolescents alongside national tobacco control policies and social context. We analyzed nationally representative Global Youth Tobacco Survey data from Georgia (2014, 2017, and 2023) for youth aged 11-17 to estimate the prevalence and patterns of current TNP use in the context of tobacco-related advertising and promotion, secondhand smoke, and national policy, via a policy review.
