CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a ten-year-old girl, who had been treated for a malignant germinal tumour five years before, presenting with a leukaemia-like syndrome associating bone pain, liver and spleen nodules and bone marrow involvement. The cyto-pathological analysis showed undifferentiated cells and CD56 and protein S100 were found as the only positive markers. The child received several subsequent lines of chemotherapy and ultimately died of the disease.

Fas ligand (FasL), a cell surface molecule belonging to the tumour necrosis family, induces apoptosis through its receptor, Fas antigen (Fas). 9 patients (8 males 1 female, middle age 24.3 years, range 20-41) affected by primary mediastinal germ cell tumor were surgically treated in our department. They were 4 seminomas, 2 embryonal carcinomas, 1 malignant teratoma and 2 benign teratomas. Three patients were asymptomatic; cough, dyspnea and chest pain were the most frequently observed symptoms. The staging work-up did not show signs of metastatic disease in the malignant types. Benign teratomas underwent complete excision. The synthesis of fatty acids from [14C]malonyl-CoA was studied with a high-speed particulate fraction from germinating pea (Pisum sativum). The variety used (Feltham First) produced mainly saturated fatty acids with palmitate (30--40%) and stearate (40--60%) predominating. The malignant germinal tumors found in the testis (seminoma, teratocarcinoma, embryonal carcinoma, choriocarcinoma, and mixtures of these) can originate in the anterior mediastinum.
