Exposures to pollutants and contaminants can occur through water or soil, which can be contaminated naturally or through human activities. The toxicity and adverse health effects of these substances depend on exposure route, quantity, and duration. Mechanisms of water contamination include runoff, flooding, infrastructure failures, and contamination from air and surface water pollution. Pesticides and organophosphates commonly are used in agricultural and residential applications, frequently cause water contamination, and commonly cause poisoning in agricultural workers and gardeners. Short-wavelength and short-wavelength-enhanced light have a strong impact on night-time working performance, subjective feelings of alertness and circadian physiology. In the present study, we investigated acute effects of white light sources with varied reduced portions of short wavelengths on cognitive and visual performance, mood and cardiac output.Thirty-one healthy subjects were investigated in a balanced cross-over design under three light spectra in a simulated night-shift paradigm without circadian adaptation.Exposure to the light spectrum with the largest attenuation of short waveleng

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the effect of noise exposure on bottom-up and top-down attention functions in industrial workers based on behavioral and brain responses recorded by the multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG).
METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 563 shipyard noise-exposed workers with clinical normal hearing were recruited for cognitive testing. Personal cumulative noise exposure (CNE) was calculated with the long-term equivalent noise level and employment duration. The performance of cognitive tests was compared between the high CNE group (H-CNE, >92.2) and the low CNE group

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal diet and food insecurity contribute to hypertension disparities experienced by individuals with low-income. Clinic-based nutrition counseling is limited by time constraints and low access to dietitians. Integrating community health workers (CHWs) with basic nutrition training into care teams may be an effective strategy to promote sustainable dietary modifications.
OBJECTIVE: Describe the design of Heart Well, a study to determine whether adding nutrition counseling to a primary care-based CHW hypertension program is feasible and acceptable and improves diet and blood p

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic carriers significantly influence the transmission dynamics of C. difficile. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of toxigenic C. difficile asymptomatic colonization (tCDAC) and investigate its heterogeneity across different populations. We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus for articles published between 2000 and 2023 on tCDAC. Studies including asymptomatic adults with laboratory-confirmed tCDAC were eligible. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence by clinical characteristics, settings, and geographic areas. In add

Among heterosexual couples in sub-Saharan Africa, fears of relationship dissolution and inability to bear healthy children following an HIV-positive result remain barriers to HIV testing. Recently expanded availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) affords a critical opportunity to promote HIV testing with reassuring communication that highlights use for relationship preservation and healthy childbearing. We aimed to develop a theoretically-grounded communication intervention to promote partner HIV testing within assisted partner notification (APN) and antenatal care (ANC) programs in Uga

AIMS: To update the analysis of the cohort mortality and cancer incidence study of employees in the Australian petroleum industry.
METHODS: Employees from 1981 to 1996 were traced through the Australian National Death Index and the National Cancer Statistics Clearing House. Cause specific mortality and cancer incidence were compared with those of the Australian population by means of standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) and standardised incidence ratios (SIRs). Associations between increased incidence of specific cancers and employment in the petroleum industry were tested by trends according

BACKGROUND: The importance of occupational exposure to airborne agents in the development of obstructive disease is uncertain. Studying the relation in a community population has the benefit of reducing the healthy worker effect seen in studies of working populations.
METHODS: The prevalence of obstructive lung disease was examined in a Norwegian general population aged 18-73 in a two phased cross sectional survey. In the second phase a stratified sample (n = 1512) of those responding in the first phase was invited for clinical and spirometric examination (attendance rate 84%). Attenders were

A cohort of 3971 white miners in South Africa, born between 1 January 1916 and 31 December 1930 who were alive on 1 January 1970 and currently working in the East Rand-Central Rand-West Rand mining areas, was followed up for nine years, when the 3426 survivors were aged from 48 to 62. Fifteen (0.4%) had been lost to view and 530 had died (13.4% of the 3956 whose vital status was determined). Based on the occupational histories of a 30% sample of the cohort it was known that the vast majority were gold miners. An estimated 93% had worked more than 85% of their mining service in gold mines. Stan

BACKGROUND: State universities in the Philippines should comply with the 2020 Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards for government workers and must be guided by the 2017 ASEAN University Network's Healthy University Framework (HUF) for them to become healthy universities. Both policy documents identify OSH policy and programs as key components.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of health and safety policies and programs in a state university in the Philippines.
METHODS: A case study design was used with a state university a

BACKGROUND: Stunting among children under five years of age is a global public health concern, especially in low-and middle-income settings. Emerging evidence suggests a gradual reduction in the overall prevalence of stunting in Rwanda, necessitating a qualitative understanding of the contributing drivers to help develop targeted and effective strategies. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of women and men to identify key issues that influence childhood nutrition and stunting as well as possible solutions to address the problem.
METHODS: Ten (10) focus group discussions (FG

BACKGROUND: Works on labour-related hearing loss have traditionally been centred on the study of noise as the principal cause. The presence of physical and chemical pollutants is very common in the metalworking branch. This article analyses both, together with certain personal habits, with the aim of determining their joint influence on labour-related hearing loss.
METHODS: A sample of 558 workers was analysed using Cox regression with an explicative aim. The character of the cause-effect relations existing between the variables considered is defined with respect to three situations: healthy/

OBJECTIVE: To describe the acute and long-term effects of mustard gas (MG) and propose a screening protocol to prevent complications.
METHODS: Follow-up of (n = 247) workers exposed to MG with a standard protocol.
RESULTS: Healing of burns varied according to natural pigmentation of skin, not reported elsewhere. Multiple and chronic skin infections developed on burns. Liver functions and cardiac conduction were temporarily altered in burn cases without other complications. No fatalities were noted. Months after exposure, bronchitis and posttraumatic stress disorder became prevalent regardles

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In the USA, diabetes disproportionately affects Hispanics/Latinx, continuing to contribute to health disparities. To address the diabetes epidemic, separate programs for pre-diabetes and diabetes are promoted nationwide. However, engagement by Hispanics/Latinx in either program is lagging. Recent evidence suggests that offering a single community health worker delivered intervention that includes both groups and allows family members to participate may be more effective and in harmony with Latino cultural values, especially if offered to Latino women (Latinas) who tradit

INTRODUCTION: Risky sexual behavior exposes an individual to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Even though risky sexual behavior is a devastating problem in low- and middle-income countries, studies on risky sexual behavior and associated factors among reproductive-age women in Eastern African countries are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of risky sexual behavior and associated factors among reproductive-age women in Eastern African countries that help to target high-risk groups and set appropriate

BACKGROUND: Arm, shoulder and neck symptoms are very prevalent among computer workers. In an attempt to reduce these symptoms, a large occupational health service in the Netherlands developed a preventive programme on exposure to risk factors, prevalence of arm, shoulder and neck symptoms, and sick leave in computer workers. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of this intervention programme.
METHODS: The study was a randomised controlled trial. The participants were assigned to either the intervention group or the usual care group by means of cluster randomisation. At ba

BACKGROUND: There is a need to find new methods that can enhance the individuals' engagement in self-care and increase compliance to a healthy lifestyle for the prevention of noncommunicable diseases and improved quality of life. Mobile health (mHealth) apps could provide large-scale, cost-efficient digital solutions to implement lifestyle change, which as a corollary may enhance quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: Here we evaluate if the use of a smartphone-based self-management system, the Health Integrator app, with or without telephone counseling by a health coach, had an effect on clinical varia

BACKGROUND: Engagement in Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPPs) helps prevent or delay progression to type 2 diabetes, but engagement in these is low, especially among low-income and Black or Latina/o adults. While financial incentives can increase engagement, offering these is not feasible for safety net health systems. The INSPIRA Study is thus assessing the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a program that supplements a community health worker (CHW)-led DPP with mutual peer support and healthy food vouchers as incentives for engagement.
DESIGN: Single site pilot ran

Aluminum is a nonessential metal to which humans are frequently exposed. Aluminum in the food supply comes from natural sources, water used in food preparation, food ingredients, and utensils used during food preparations. The amount of aluminum in the diet is small, compared with the amount of aluminum in antacids and some buffered analgesics. The healthy human body has effective barriers (skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract) to reduce the systemic absorption of aluminum ingested from water, foods, drugs, and air. The small amount of aluminum (<1%) that is systemically absorbed is excreted pr
