Engaging with patients with diabetes: the role of social media in low-income healthcare organisations.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is the fastest-growing global health concern, and its global prevalence is projected to affect 643 million individuals by 2030. Social media platforms, like Facebook, have become crucial channels for healthcare organisations to engage with the public to promote prevention and disease management, especially in low-resource settings like Honduras. This study aims to perform a retrospective analysis of Honduran healthcare organisations' Facebook posts to understand how effectively they engage diabetes-related content with their followers. METHODS: The top 10 followed

Bloom Syndrome Complicated by Low-Grade Lymphoma and Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: A Case Report.

Bloom syndrome (BS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by photosensitivity, rashes on the nose and cheeks, short stature, and a predisposition to develop cancers. In this report, we discuss the diagnosis and management of a 34-year-old Canadian male BS patient, originally from Honduras, who developed B-cell lymphoma and a subsequent non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Given the radiosensitivity of the patient due to his BS diagnosis and the early stage of the low-grade B-cell lymphoma, we relied on surveillance as the clinical approach to his management. The treatm

Ocular abnormalities in congenital Zika syndrome: a case report, and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: As the number of children with Zika virus-related complications grows, the long-term developmental trajectory and its effects on families are unknown. We present the first known case of congenital Zika syndrome seen at our institution with significant fundus findings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-day-old Hispanic baby girl presented with severe microcephaly of 24 cm and temperature instability at birth. Her mother had traveled to Honduras early in pregnancy and testing of amniotic fluid was positive for Zika virus via polymerase chain reaction. A dilated fundus examination was significa

Immune Profile of Honduran Schoolchildren with Intestinal Parasites: The Skewed Response against Geohelminths.

Soil-transmitted helminth infections typically induce a type-2 immune response (Th2), but no immunoepidemiological studies have been undertaken in Honduras, an endemic country where the main control strategy is children's annual deworming. We aimed to characterize the immune profile of Honduran schoolchildren harbouring these parasitoses. Demographic and epidemiological data were obtained through a survey; nutritional status was assessed through anthropometry; intestinal parasites were diagnosed by formol-ether and Kato-Katz; and blood samples were collected to determine immunological markers

Elimination of Rhodnius prolixus in Central America.

Rhodnius prolixus is one of the main vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. In Central America, it was first discovered in 1915 in El Salvador, from where it spread northwest to Guatemala and Mexico, and southeast to Nicaragua and Costa Rica, arriving also in Honduras in the late 1950s. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) by the antimalaria services of Costa Rica prevented its spread southwards, and similar IRS programmes appear to have eliminated it from El Salvador by the late 1970s. In 1997, by resolution of the Ministers of Health of the seven Central American countrie

Variations in provision and uptake of antenatal care.

Antenatal care providers vary from one country to another. In Europe, most of the care is provided by obstetricians in some countries, while the role of midwives is important in other countries. Many women are attended by general practitioners in Canada and, to a lesser extent, in the US. Involvement of traditional birth attendants in antenatal care in more than 5% of the pregnancies has been reported in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico only. Several indicators may be used to measure the utilization of antenatal care: the percentage of women receiving care, timing of the first visit, proportion

Molecular variation of Plasmodium vivax dehydrofolate reductase in Mexico and Nicaragua contrasts with that occurring in South America.

OBJECTIVE: To research mutations associated to pyrimethamine resistance in dihydrofolate reductase (pvdhfr) of Plasmodium vivax from Mexico and Nicaragua and compare it to that reported in the rest of America. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA was obtained from P. vivax-infected blood samples. A pvdhfr gene fragment was amplified and sequenced. The identified gene variations were compared to those observed in other affected sites of America. RESULTS: No mutations in pvdhfr were detected in P. vivax from Mexico and Nicaragua. One synonymous change and variation in the repeat domain was detec

Exploring Beliefs, Concerns, Prenatal Care Advice, and Sources of Information About Gestational Weight Gain Among Immigrant Central American Pregnant Women in the United States.

Gestational weight gain (GWG) is critical for maternal and neonatal health, but excessive GWG can lead to complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and increased obesity risk later in life. Minoritized and immigrant women often face higher risks of excessive GWG. This cross-sectional study assessed Central American women's beliefs and concerns about GWG, the receipt of advice from healthcare providers, and sources of information for healthy weight management during pregnancy. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 93 pregnant women from El Salvador (31.2%), Guatemala (46.2

A Multicountry Comparison of Three Coverage Evaluation Survey Sampling Methodologies for Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Coverage evaluation surveys (CESs) are an important complement to routinely reported drug coverage estimates following mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Although the WHO recommends the routine use of CESs, they are rarely implemented. Reasons for this low uptake are multifaceted; one is uncertainty on the best sampling method. We conducted a multicountry study to compare the statistical characteristics, cost, time, and complexity of three commonly used CES sampling methods: the Expanded Program on Immunization's (EPI's) 30 × 7 cluster survey, a stratified design

Normative Data for Learning and Memory Test (TAMV-I) in Latin American and Spanish Children: An item response theory and linear mixed models approach.

Robust normative data for pediatric learning and memory tests in Spanish-speaking populations are scarce, and existing approaches often rely on univariate methods that overlook item-level properties and inter-trial dependencies. The aim was to evaluate the item parameters of the TAMV-I using Item Response Theory (IRT) and to generate covariate-adjusted normative data through Linear Mixed Models (LMM). We hypothesized that the 2-parameter logistic (2PL) model would outperform the Rasch model and that demographic and contextual factors would show significant interactions influencing test perform

A novel mutation in type II methemoglobinemia.

Type II methemoglobinemia is a somatic deficiency of cytochrome b5 reductase with severe global neurologic impairment. We report a novel mutation in exon 3 of the CYB5R3 gene on chromosome 22 consisting of homozygous 1-base pair (bp) deletion noted as c.215delG; p.Gly72AlafsX100. The patient had improvement of gross motor skills, chewing, and swallowing that may be due to the initiation of daily ascorbic acid therapy. We hypothesize that a possible response to ascorbic acid may be related to the effect of making additional ferrous iron available for its role as a cofactor in carnitine synthesi
