Massage Therapy for Dystonia: a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is a neurological disorder, characterized by involuntary muscle spasms and tremors, resulting in abnormal movements and posture. Symptoms include pain, spasms, tremors, and dyskinesia-a difficulty in performing voluntary muscular movements. Conventional treatments include medication, botulism injections, and surgical intervention. Many dystonia patients seek complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies, such as massage, but these treatments are not well documented. This clinical case study documents massage treatment for dystonia for a specific individual. PURPO

A systematic review of interventions to enhance the healing of chronic ulcers of the foot in diabetes.

The outcome of management of diabetic foot ulcers is poor, and there is continuing uncertainty concerning optimal approaches to management. It was for these reasons that in 2006 the International Working Group of the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) working group on wound healing undertook a systematic review of the evidence to inform protocols for routine care and to highlight areas which should be considered for further study. The same working group has now updated this review by considering papers on the interventions to improve the healing of chronic ulcers published between December 2006 and June 20

Comparative study of Chinese herbal enema combined with mesalazine vs mesalazine alone in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mesalazine is a standard treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC). However, it is unclear whether the efficacy of mesalazine combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) enemas is superior to that of mesalazine alone. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of TCM enema hydrotherapy combined with mesalazine for active UC. METHODS: Patients with active UC were randomly assigned to two treatment groups: a combination of mesalazine and TCM enemas and mesalazine alone. Primary outcome measures included clinical effective and recurrence rate. Secondary outco

Labor Intervention and Outcomes in Women Who Are Nulliparous and Obese: Comparison of Nurse-Midwife to Obstetrician Intrapartum Care.

BACKGROUND: Women who are obese have slower labors than women of normal weight, and show reduced response to interventions designed to speed labor progress like oxytocin augmentation and artificial rupture of membranes. The optimal labor management for these women has not been described. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared 2 propensity score-matched groups of women (N = 360) who were healthy, nulliparous, spontaneously laboring, and obese (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). Labors were managed by either a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or an obstetrician at one hospital from 2005 thro

[Management of severe burns during the 1st 72 hours].

Early and efficient management of severely burned patients facilitates outcome improvement. Pre-hospital care includes fluid loading with 2 mL.kg-1/% burn over the first six hours, sedation and analgesia, prevention of hypothermia and ventilatory support for either critically burned patients or facial, cervical or pulmonary burn injury. The transient stay in a general hospital before transfer to a burn centre allows extension of initial care, the critical investigation for associated injuries (intoxication, multiple trauma) and to perform initial local treatment with sterile coverage or vaseli
