[An optimized segmentation of main vessel in coronary angiography images via removing the overlapping pacemaker].

Coronary angiography (CAG) as a typical imaging modality for the diagnosis of coronary diseases hasbeen widely employed in clinical practices. For CAG-based computer-aided diagnosis systems, accurate vessel segmentation plays a fundamental role. However, patients with bradycardia usually have a pacemaker which frequently interferes the vessel segmentation. In this case, the segmentation of vessels will be hard. To mitigate interferences of pacemakers and then extract main vessels more effectively in CAG images, we propose an approach. At first, a pseudo CAG (pCAG) image is generated through a

Computer-aided detection of centroblasts for follicular lymphoma grading using adaptive likelihood-based cell segmentation.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is one of the most common lymphoid malignancies in the western world. FL has a variable clinical course, and important clinical treatment decisions for FL patients are based on histological grading, which is done by manually counting the large malignant cells called centroblasts (CB) in ten standard microscopic high-power fields from H&E-stained tissue sections. This method is tedious and subjective; as a result, suffers from considerable inter and intrareader variability even when used by expert pathologists. In this paper, we present a computer-aided detection system

3-D treatment planning and dose delivery verification integrating a variety of state-of-the-art techniques: a case report.

A patient previously treated with radiation for base-of-tongue cancer presented with recurrent disease seven years later. The spinal cord had received tolerance dose. Using state-of-the-art treatment planning techniques, including beam's-eye-view and volumetrics, dose-volume histograms, split field technique, mixed energies, and beam intensity modulation (with a compensator), we achieved uniform dose coverage of the target in 3-D. This was verified in vivo with thermoluminescence dosimeters positioned in the esophagus by means of a nasogastric tube that ran centrally through the target volume.

Attenuation Tomography Using Low-Frequency Ultrasound for Thorax Imaging: Feasibility Study.

Low-frequency ultrasound can permeate human thorax and can be applied in functional imaging of the respiratory system. In this study, we investigate the transmission of low-frequency ultrasound through the human thorax and propose a waveform matching method to track the changes in the transmission signal during subject's respiration. The method's effectiveness is validated through experiments involving ten human subjects. Furthermore, the experimental findings indicate that the traveltime of the first-arrival signal remains consistent throughout the respiratory cycle. Leveraging this observati

Investigation of alterations in multifractality in optical coherence tomographic images of in vivo human retina.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables us to monitor alterations in the thickness of the retinal layer as disease progresses in the human retina. However, subtle morphological changes in the retinal layers due to early disease progression often may not lead to detectable alterations in the thickness. OCT images encode depth-dependent backscattered intensity distribution arising due to the depth distributions of the refractive index from tissue microstructures. Here, such depth-resolved refractive index variations of different retinal layers were analyzed using multifractal detrended fluctu

Advances in the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Fetal Echocardiography.

Congenital heart disease is a severe health risk for newborns. Early detection of abnormalities in fetal cardiac structure and function during pregnancy can help patients seek timely diagnostic and therapeutic advice, and early intervention planning can significantly improve fetal survival rates. Echocardiography is one of the most accessible and widely used diagnostic tools in the diagnosis of fetal congenital heart disease. However, traditional fetal echocardiography has limitations due to fetal, maternal, and ultrasound equipment factors and is highly dependent on the skill level of the ope

Evidence for altered lesion-induced sprouting in the dentate gyrus of adult rats exposed to ethanol in utero.

Quantitative computer-assisted image processing techniques were used to measure changes in the Timm sulfide silver histochemical staining in the dentate gyrus of rats exposed to ethanol during gestation and following unilateral entorhinal lesions as adults. Prenatal exposure to a liquid diet containing 35% ethanol derived calories (12.6 +/- 0.9 g/kg/day) had no effect on the size of either the inner or total molecular layers. However, prenatal ethanol exposure did affect afferent reorganization when animals were lesioned as adults. There was a significant increase in the width and area of the

Simulation of the expected performance of a seamless scanner for brain PET based on highly pixelated CdTe detectors.

The aim of this work is the evaluation of the design for a nonconventional PET scanner, the voxel imaging PET (VIP), based on pixelated room-temperature CdTe detectors yielding a true 3-D impact point with a density of 450 channels/cm(3), for a total 6 336 000 channels in a seamless ring shaped volume. The system is simulated and evaluated following the prescriptions of the NEMA NU 2-2001 and the NEMA NU 4-2008 standards. Results show that the excellent energy resolution of the CdTe detectors (1.6% for 511 keV photons), together with the small voxel pitch (1 × 1 × 2 mm(3)), and the crack-free

Quantitative phantom-based comparison of commercial CT metal artifact reduction algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Metal artifacts in computed tomography (CT) significantly compromise image quality and CT number (CTN) accuracy, which may influence downstream applications such as radiation therapy workflows. Although commercial metal artifact reduction (MAR) algorithms are widely used, their performance varies across vendors and clinical scenarios, and standardized methods for quantitative comparison remain limited. PURPOSE: This study quantitatively compares four commercial MAR algorithms using standardized metrics and a novel analytical approach. METHODS: A custom-designed resin phantom with

Multi-window scanning method for region-of-interest selection in pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound images.

This study presents a method for semantic segmentation of pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) images. We developed a hybrid method to automatically select relevant frames from EUS video sequences, employing two nested dynamic windows: a smaller window scans local regions of each frame, while a larger window defines the overall scanning area, capturing spatial context. Texture features, including mode, mean, and standard deviation, are extracted from both windows to construct a feature vector for a fully connected neural network classifier (NNC), which predicts the class of each pixel. Leveraging commonality across multiple tissue slices for enhanced whole slide image classification using graph convolutional networks.

BACKGROUND: Accurate classification of histopathological whole slide images (WSIs) is essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Conventional WSI creation involves slicing a biopsy tissue into multiple slices, placing them on a single glass slide, and digitally scanning them. While deep learning approaches have shown promise in WSI analysis, they mostly overlook potential common patterns across different slices of the original tissue. METHODS: We propose a novel technique that leverages inter-slice commonality to enhance classification performance. Our method constructs graphs for

ToBaFu: Topology-based fusion model for classification of two-dimensional cancer images.

Medical images play a pivotal role in disease diagnosis. Numerous studies on cancer image analysis focus on end-to-end deep neural networks, neglecting the analysis of global topological features in images. In cancer diagnosis, pathological images frequently display structures like holes or loops that are absent in healthy images, highlighting the benefits of topological analysis of images. In our study, we employ persistent homology (PH) to extract topological features from two-dimensional cancer images. Then, we propose a topology-based model (Topo) for image classification by implementing a

Tiny-objective segmentation for spot signs on multi-phase CT angiography via contrastive learning with dynamic-updated positive-negative memory banks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Presence of spot sign on CT Angiography (CTA) is associated with hematoma growth in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. Measuring spot sign volume over time may aid to predict hematoma expansion. Due to the difficulties that imaging characteristics of spot sign are similar with vein and calcification and spot signs are tiny appeared in CTA images to detect, our aim is to develop an automated method to pick up spot signs accurately. METHODS: We proposed a novel collaborative architecture of network based on a student-teacher model by efficiently exploiting additio

An innovative AI-based dual segmentation application for head surgery.

Accurate anatomical segmentation in computed tomography (CT) imaging is vital for diagnostics and virtual surgical planning in head and neck surgery, yet manual methods remain time-consuming and inconsistent. This study presents a dual-model artificial intelligence (AI) system that automates the segmentation of key craniofacial structures. A total of 388 clinical CT scans were processed using a two-stage nnU-Net-based approach: a coarse global model (3.0 mm resolution) followed by a fine local model (0.5 mm resolution). Ground truth segmentations of the skull, mandible, teeth, sinuses, and sof

A hybrid attention network for accurate breast tumor segmentation in ultrasound images.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging is widely recognized as a non-invasive and cost-effective modality for the timely diagnosis of breast cancer. Despite its clinical importance, automatic tumor segmentation remains a highly challenging task because of speckle noise, varying lesion scale, and inherently indistinct boundaries between malignant and healthy tissue. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel hybrid attention-based segmentation framework, named HA-Net, tailored for BUS images. The proposed HA-Net uses a pre-trained DenseNet-121 backbone in the encoder to extract discriminative f

Lung segment anything model (LuSAM): a decoupled prompt-integrated framework for automated lung segmentation on chest x-Ray images.

Accurate lung segmentation in chest x-ray images plays a pivotal role in early disease detection and clinical decision-making. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach to enhance the precision of lung segmentation using the Segment Anything Model (SAM). Despite its versatility, SAM faces the challenge of prompt decoupling, often resulting in misclassifications, especially with intricate structures like the clavicle. Our research focuses on the integration of spatial attention mechanisms within SAM. This approach enables the model to concentrate specifically on the lung region, foster
