BACKGROUND: Between 2012-2022 opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States, including Washington State, have risen dramatically. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a complex, chronic, and criminalized illness with biological, environmental, and social causes. One-fifth of people with OUD have recent criminal-legal system involvement; > 50% pass through WA jails annually. Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) can effectively treat OUD. WA has prioritized improving access to MOUD, including for those in jails. As patients in jail settings are systematically marginalized due to incarceratio

Evidence suggests that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing in schools can add a layer of protection to reduce the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 and facilitate a safer return to in-person learning. Despite this evidence, implementation of testing in school settings has been challenging initially because of a lack of funding and limited availability of testing, but, as the pandemic has progressed and more funding and resources have been devoted to testing, other implementation challenges have arisen. We describe key implementation barriers and strategies that

Shelley et al. (in Accelerating integration of tobacco use treatment in the context of lung cancer screening: relevance and application of implementation science to achieving policy and practice. Transl Behav Med 2022;12:1076-1083) laid out how implementation science frameworks and methods can advance the delivery of tobacco use treatment services during lung cancer screening services, which until recently was mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Their discussion provides an important overview of the full process of implementation and highlights the vast number of decisi

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic disease that results in progressive neuromuscular weakness. Without therapy, the most common form of the disease, type 1, typically results in death or chronic respiratory failure in the first 2 years of life. Thanks to the recent introduction of newborn screening programs and the discovery of three disease-modifying therapies in the last decade, the outcomes of children with SMA have dramatically improved. Patients are able to achieve many, if not all, of the typical neuromotor milestones, such as sitting, standing and walking, as well as safe o

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and is a driver of significant health and educational inequity. Despite research demonstrating that school-based asthma interventions can improve health and educational outcomes and advance equity, calls to shift the field to a dissemination and implementation focus have gone largely unanswered.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: Building upon the foundation of Charles Basch's 2011 "Healthier Students are Better Learners" framework, we summarize relevant findings from the recent literature on school-based asthma interventions. T

BACKGROUND: This editorial discusses challenges with inconsistent translation of evidence into routine clinical practice in health care. To illustrate the challenge and point toward solutions, we consider the field of anterior cruciate ligament injury management, which is characterized by intensive study of surgical approaches.
METHODS: We conducted a critical analysis of publications in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, and Arthroscopy from January 2025 to March 2026 (n = 821). EndNote records were filtered for terms associated with research translation and implementation science.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Assertive Community Treatment is an established evidenced based practice that provides intensive community treatment for individuals with severe mental illness with recurrent hospitalizations and/or homelessness. Emerging evidence indicates limitations in its implementation in terms of to the original ACT model and its current relevance.
RECENT FINDINGS: Findings from recent studies (2018-2020) reveals challenges with implementation centered around basic implementation activities, such as changes in the psychosocial context of individuals with SMI, clinicians' abilities to

We present interim findings of a cross-site case study of an initiative to expand Housing First (HF) in Canada through training and technical assistance (TTA). HF is an evidence-based practice designed to end chronic homelessness for consumers of mental health services. We draw upon concepts from implementation science and systems change theory to examine how early implementation occurs within a system. Case studies examining HF early implementation were conducted in six Canadian communities receiving HF TTA. The primary data are field notes gathered over 1.5 years and evaluations from site-sp

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends HIV self-testing (HIVST) as an additional approach to HIV testing and the Nigerian government is supportive of this policy recommendation. However, effectively increasing uptake and sustainability among Nigerian youth is unknown. The goal of this study is to conduct a full-powered type I hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial to test the effectiveness of youth-friendly implementation science strategies in increasing uptake and sustainability of HIVST led by and for Nigerian youth.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) poses a significant public health concern impacting maternal and infant outcomes. In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) to develop the Opioid use disorder, Maternal outcomes, and Neonatal abstinence syndrome Initiative Learning Community (OMNI LC) to identify and disseminate best practices and strategies for implementing systems-level changes in state health departments to address OUD affecting pregnant and postpartum persons and infants prenatally exposed to opioi

In the recent past, considerable progress has been made in understanding how human behavior and social organization, macro- and micro-level economic processes, and health and political systems affect responses to malaria at global, national, community, household, and individual levels. Advances in malaria-related social, behavioral, economic, evaluation, health systems, and policy (social science) research have resulted in improvements in the design and implementation of malaria prevention, management and control (PMC) strategies. Indeed, the past two decades chronicle dramatic advances in the

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. INTRODUCTION & AIM: Intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) increase postoperative complications, which are devastating to patients and costly to healthcare systems. To optimise patient outcomes, the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (WHO SSC) was introduced in 2008, but adherence, especially to its third part (sign-out), is low, and iAEs are currently not routinely assessed. This gap between evidence supporting the use of the WHO SSC, current inconsistent sign-out practice and the lack of standardised reporting of iAEs warrants applying an implementation science approach. Hence, this project aims to

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents an unprecedented opportunity to invest in health. Individual adolescent life skills programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have demonstrated success but neither their relative effectiveness across multiple health arenas, including mental health, nor their key ingredients have been examined.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify key implementation processes and effectiveness of life skills programs among adolescents in LMICs which targeted at least one mental health outcome, as well as their relative effectivene

INTRODUCTION: Addressing the obesity epidemic requires understanding the complex and multilevel dynamics that shape it. Systems science can help researchers and practitioners move beyond linear causal logic. This overview identifies empirical studies using explicit systems science methods or broader systems-informed approaches to design, implement, or evaluate community-based childhood obesity prevention efforts. We report how systems methods have been applied, their contributions to tackling obesity, challenges, and opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic blood losses from repetitive laboratory testing are a leading cause of anemia of prematurity and blood transfusions. We used an implementation science approach to decrease iatrogenic blood losses during the first 3 postnatal weeks among very low birth weight infants.
METHODS: We performed qualitative interviews of key stakeholders to assess implementation determinants (ie, barriers and facilitators to reducing iatrogenic blood losses), guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Next, we selected implementation strategies matched to these implementa

Conservation assessment is a rapidly evolving discipline whose stated goal is the design of networks of protected areas that represent and ensure the persistence of nature (i.e., species, habitats, and environmental processes) by separating priority areas from the activities that degrade or destroy them. Nevertheless, despite a burgeoning scientific literature that ever refines these techniques for allocating conservation resources, it is widely believed that conservation assessments are rarely translated into actions that actually conserve nature. We reviewed the conservation assessment liter

BACKGROUND: The incorporation of implementation science approaches into tobacco control program delivery remains limited. Programs developed using these approaches, including co-creation, are often more feasible and sustainable, as they are designed to consider the operational and cultural context of an organization. This study utilized multiple implementation science approaches to co-create a tobacco cessation workflow within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), where tobacco use is disproportionately higher than the national average.
METHODS: In this study we conducted six structured
