Help seeking for cardiac symptoms: beyond the masculine-feminine binary.

Empirical and theoretical literature suggests that stereotypical gender roles shape men's and women's health help-seeking behavior, and plays an important role in the treatment seeking delays of cardiac patients. We were interested in exploring the ways in which gender informs the experiences and help-seeking behavior of men and women who experienced the symptoms associated with acute cardiac events. We undertook 20 in-depth interviews between October 2007 and July 2008 with 11 men and 9 women recently diagnosed with an acute coronary syndrome in British Columbia, Canada. Participants were enc

Sexually transmitted diseases in Morocco: gender influences on prevention and health care seeking behavior.

Increased awareness of the medical and social costs of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) has resulted in greater attention to the control of these illnesses. STDs are responsible for a significant amount of morbidity in Morocco and have become a key target of the HIV control program. In 1996, the Ministry of Health conducted a qualitative study in order to enhance information, education and communication strategies in the national STD/HIV program. Data on the conceptualization and knowledge of STD, information sources and health-care-seeking behavior were gathered through 70 semidirected, in

Supporting Informed Decision-Making Regarding Participation in Cervical Cancer Prevention Programs: A Qualitative Study Among Turkish-, Moroccan-, and Syrian-Dutch Women.

BackgroundTurkish-, Moroccan-, and potentially Syrian-Dutch women in the Netherlands are disproportionately affected by cervical cancer (CC), yet participate less in CC screening and Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination program compared to other ethnic minorities and native Dutch women. Existing informational materials insufficiently address their practical, emotional, cultural, and religious concerns. Our aim was to investigate the information seeking behavior and the information needs regarding CC screening and HPV vaccination among Turkish-, Moroccan-, and Syrian-Dutch women.MethodsSemi-

Role of cyberchondria severity in the relationship between HPV awareness and vaccination status among adult women.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection associated with most cervical cancers. Despite the effectiveness of HPV vaccines, awareness and knowledge about HPV and its vaccine remain low among women. In today's digital world, obtaining information about HPV is also shifting. Cyberchondria, characterized by excessive online health-related information-seeking behavior, can affect health behaviors. This study explored the relationships between HPV awareness, vaccination status, and cyberchondria. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducte

"Is It Really Confidential?" A Content Analysis of Online Information About Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Many young people are not aware of their rights to confidential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care. Given that online health information seeking is common among adolescents, we examined how health education Web content about SRH for young people addresses confidentiality. METHODS: In Spring 2017, we conducted Google keyword searches (e.g., "teens" and "sex education") to identify health promotion Web sites operated by public health/medical organizations in the United States and providing original content about SRH for adolescents/young adults. Thirty-two Web sites met inclusio

Malaria care-seeking behaviour among HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral treatment in South-Eastern Nigeria: A cross-sectional study.

This study assesses malaria prevention and treatment behaviour among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Owerri, South Eastern Nigeria. Although Nigeria bears one of the world's largest burdens of both malaria and HIV, there is almost no research studying how co-infected patients manage their care. We systematically sampled 398 PLWHA receiving care at Imo State Specialist Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri to complete a structured, pre-tested questionnaire on malaria care-seeking behaviour. Descriptive statistics were reported and chi-square tests and multivariate logistic re

Use of Social Media for Health-Related Tasks by Adolescents With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Step in the Pathway of Transition.

BACKGROUND: Social media is commonly used among the adolescent and young adult population, including those with chronic diseases. For adults, these platforms have been shown to be a major source of health information. Our aims were to explore how youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) use social media for (1) disease information gathering, (2) provider communication, (3) sense of belonging to the IBD community, (4) self-expression around IBD, and (5) disease management/monitoring. METHODS: An anonymous and voluntary survey was administered to IBD patients age 12 to 25 years at a single c

U.S. consumers' processing of information about CRISPR-edited pork products.

The commercialization of CRISPR gene-edited pork is advancing rapidly, following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of gene-edited pigs resistant to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). As these products move closer to market entry, understanding how consumers seek, process, and avoid information about them is critical for developing effective communication strategies. Guided by the Risk Information Seeking and Processing (RISP) model, this study examined factors influencing information seeking, information avoidance, and information processing related to CRISPR-

The Effect of Media Coverage of Celebrities with Panic Disorder on the Health Behaviors of the Public.

Although having a mental illness has become common, many people tend to hide their illness and avoid seeking treatment. One of the reasons for not seeking treatment is the stigma of mental illness. Celebrity confessions about their experiences of mental illness can reduce such stigma, because the public obtains more knowledge about the illness and becomes more familiar with it. However, little research has been conducted on the influence of a celebrity's confession about mental illness on the public's health behaviors related to the illness. The present study examined the effects of the media

The Help-Seeking Behavior of Victims of Image-Based Sexual Harassment and Abuse: A Scoping Review.

Image-based sexual harassment and abuse (IBSHA) has recently gained scientific attention. To date, research has primarily focused on victim characteristics and impact, while little specific empirical research exists on victims' help-seeking behavior, including barriers and facilitators to seeking support. The aim of this scoping review was to examine the current state of literature on IBSHA victims' help-seeking behavior and barriers and facilitators to seeking support. Seven electronic bibliographic databases were searched up to June 2023 to identify relevant literature. Inclusion criteria co

Cancer Information-seeking in an Age of COVID-19: Findings from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service.

Seeking cancer information is recognized as an important, life-saving behavior under normal circumstances. However, given the significant impact of COVID-19 on society, the healthcare system, and individuals and their families, it is important to understand how the pandemic has affected cancer information needs in a crisis context and, in turn, how public health agencies have responded to meeting the information needs of various audiences. Using data from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS) - a long-standing, multi-channel resource for trusted cancer information in

Sexual behavior, knowledge and information sources of very young adolescents in four sub-Saharan African countries.

Adolescents are a key target group for HIV and pregnancy prevention efforts, yet very little is known about the youngest adolescents: those under age 15. New survey data from 12-14 year olds in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi and Uganda are used to describe their sexual activity, knowledge about HIV, STIs and pregnancy prevention, and sources of sexual and reproductive health information, including sex education in schools. Results show that very young adolescents are already beginning to be sexually active and many believe their close friends are sexually active. They have high levels of awarenes

Patient Preferences Towards Plain Language Resources During their Multiple Sclerosis Journey: A Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Plain language resources (PLRs) provide medical research information in an easy-to-understand form for non-specialist audiences, including patients. Plain language resources can advance health literacy both at an individual patient level and at a public health level. We aimed to learn, through the lived experience of patients with multiple sclerosis, their plain language medical information-seeking preferences and needs. An additional objective was to identify motivators and deterrents to information seeking and recommendations to make PLRs more patient friendly. MET
