Does more generous health insurance reimbursement lead to moral hazard? Evidence from large-scale administrative data in China.

This paper exploits the discrete increase in reimbursement rates at the statutory retirement age as a quasi-natural experiment to examine ex post moral hazard in inpatient care in China. Using nationally representative administrative data covering more than 450,000 hospitalization records across 29 provinces, we implement a cohort difference-in-differences design to identify the causal effect of insurance generosity on healthcare utilization. We find that a 5-percentage-point increase in reimbursement rates increases length of stay by 1.73 days and total inpatient expenditures by RMB 709.98. T

Applying the Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model for vulnerable populations to health services utilization in homeless women.

We applied the Gelberg-Andersen Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to predict health services utilization (HSU) in 875 homeless US women. Structural models assessed the impact of predisposing (demographics, psychological distress, alcohol/drug problems, homelessness severity), enabling (health insurance, source of care, barriers) and need (illness) variables on HSU (preventive care, outpatient visits, hospitalizations). Homelessness severity predicted illness, barriers and less insurance. Distress predicted more barriers, illness and less outpatient HSU. Drug problems predicted hospit

Characteristics and Cost of Unscheduled Hospitalizations in Patients Treated with New Oral Anticancer Drugs in Germany: Evidence from the Randomized AMBORA Trial.

Drug-related problems (e.g., adverse drug reactions, ADR) are serious safety issues in patients treated with oral anticancer therapeutics (OAT). The previously published randomized AMBORA trial showed that an intensified clinical pharmacological/pharmaceutical care program within the first 12 weeks of treatment reduces the number and severity of ADR as well as hospitalization rates in 202 patients. The present investigation focused on unscheduled hospitalizations detected within AMBORA and analyzed the characteristics (e.g., frequency, involved OAT) and cost of each hospital stay. To estimate
