BACKGROUND: Understanding how humans perceive and represent themselves is central to cognitive neuroscience. Although self-face processing is well characterized, how distinct dimensions of the self, such as facial and creator identities, are neurally integrated remains largely unknown. Heartbeat-related self-expression and its underlying neural interactions remain unexplored.
METHODS: We simultaneously recorded EEG and ECG signals from 32 art students while they viewed self- and other-created portraits (of self and other).
RESULTS: The results revealed distinct processing pathways for facial

The present study examines the role of brain network organization in the prospective prediction of adolescent depressive symptoms and links to the social and psychological context. Using a path model with data from a larger longitudinal study of adolescents beginning in 6th-8th grade (N = 117, 55 % female, Mage at scan= 12.99), we first established that organizational properties of brain networks theoretically linked to depression predicted greater depressive symptoms two years later. Specifically, when controlling for gender and initial depression, greater global efficiency of the allostatic

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with substance use disorders often report altered interoceptive awareness of internal bodily signals. However, it is unclear whether these alterations also extend to patients with chronic pain who misuse opioids, and whether interventions that enhance interoceptive awareness, such as mindfulness-based therapies, may reduce opioid misuse in this population.
METHODS: At baseline, participants (N = 372) with chronic pain on long-term opioid therapy completed the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM), and the

Interoception, or the perception of internal somatic states, is crucial for signaling the individual to take care of the body when needed. It enables behavioral adaptations to sickness states, which further impact autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Whether acute inflammation affects interoceptive processing and how this relates to sickness behavior remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated interoceptive processing in participants undergoing experimental endotoxemia. In neuroimaging research, heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEP) - defined as event-related potentials time-locked to electroc

Interoceptive exposure (IE) involves the use of exercises, activities, or tasks to intentionally induce (or exacerbate) physical symptoms in the body, to challenge misconceptions about the harmful nature of the physical symptoms that maintain fear and problematic avoidance. IE was originally developed for the cognitive behavioral treatment and prevention of panic disorder. Bodily sensations and concern about physical symptoms are common features in many conditions, not limited to panic disorder. For this reason, IE could be theoretically relevant to cognitive behavioral intervention for many p

BACKGROUND: Heart-Smile Training (HST) is an interoceptive compassion-based behavioral intervention that in case reports has been beneficial for depression. Interoception refers to the awareness and regulation of physiological signals from inside the body. Depressed patients often have diminished interoceptive awareness and often experience disconnection from bodily needs and sensations. In addition to interoceptive dysfunction, depression often involves negative self-evaluation and self-critical rumination. HST is a compassion-based meditation training program that explicitly cultivates inter

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with increased cardiac morbidity. Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) as well as lower interoceptive accuracy (IAc) have been observed in MDD as possible sympathomimetic mechanisms related to insula activity. The salience network (SN) anchored by the insula has been posited as a crucial functional network for cardiac sensations and the default mode network (DMN) for MDD. This study aimed to investigate the relation between insula-centered and depression-related brain networks, IAc and HRV in patients with depression as a

Interoceptive deficits-particularly with respect to the perception of emotions, hunger, and satiety-constitute important targets for intervention in eating disorders (EDs). Suitable self-report measures to identify these deficits, however, are lacking. We, therefore, developed and validated a multidimensional questionnaire to assess eating disorder-specific interoceptive perception (EDIP) in terms of the ability to perceive and discriminate between emotions, hunger, and satiety. In two independent samples with a total of 2058 individuals (22.74% with self-reported EDs), exploratory and confirm

INTRODUCTION: Decision-making deficits in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) may be partly related to their decreased interoceptive awareness (IA), which is associated with some aspects of mindfulness.
METHODS: 52 abstinent male inpatients with AUD (current severity: moderate or severe) and 52 healthy male volunteers performed the heart rate tracking task and a computerised version of the Iowa gambling task (IGT). Trait mindfulness was evaluated with the mindful attention awareness scale (MAAS).
RESULTS: Heartbeat perception (HBP), MAAS, and IGT scores of patients with AUD were sign

UNLABELLED: High rates of comorbid chronic pain, anxiety, and mood disorders among individuals with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS+) are becoming increasingly recognized, though this complex symptomology remains poorly understood and undertreated. The current project examined whether interoceptive attention regulation is protective against depressive and anxiety symptoms in individuals with suspected EDS+. Data were collected from individuals participating in a transdisciplinary diagnostic visit within an EDS+ specialty consultation clinic. Participants were included in the current analyses

In motor functional neurological disorders (mFND), relationships between interoception (a construct of high theoretical relevance to its pathophysiology) and neuroanatomy have not been previously investigated. This study characterized white matter in mFND patients compared to healthy controls (HCs), and investigated associations between fiber bundle integrity and cardiac interoception. Voxel-based analysis and tractography quantified fractional anisotropy (FA) in 38 mFND patients compared to 38 HCs. Secondary analyses compared functional seizures (FND-seiz; n = 21) or functional movement disor

BACKGROUND: Many patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) experience non-hepatic symptoms that are possibly linked to altered interoception, the sense of the body's internal state. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine if PBC patients exhibit structural and functional changes of the thalamus and insula, brain regions that process signals related to interoception.
METHODS: Fifteen PBC patients with mild disease and 17 controls underwent 3 Tesla T1-weighted MRI, resting-state functional MRI, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), to measure thalamic and insular vo

OBJECTIVE: The current case report details the treatment of a 16-year-old adolescent with anorexia nervosa utilizing a novel adjunct, acceptance-based interoceptive exposure, prior to family-based treatment (FBT) for eating disorders.
METHOD: The exposure-based module focused particularly on the tolerance of disgust. For six sessions, the clinician taught the client skills that could be used to tolerate distress to visceral sensations associated with disgust. These skills were to be used during in- and between-session exposures. Each session included exposure to physical sensations that occur

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by dysregulated intake of food, which may indicate homeostatic imbalance. Critically important for homeostatic regulation is interoception, or the sensing and processing of body-relevant information. A well-documented link between avoidance of unpleasant body sensations and BN symptoms suggests that aversive interoceptive experiences may be particularly relevant to BN pathophysiology. This study examined whether individuals with a history of BN show aberrant neural processing of aversive interoceptive stimuli. Using a cued inspiratory breathing load paradi

Aberrant interoceptive accuracy could contribute to the co-occurrence of anxiety and premonitory urge in chronic tic disorders (CTD). If it can be manipulated through intervention, it would offer a transdiagnostic treatment target for tics and anxiety. Interoceptive accuracy was first assessed consistent with previous protocols and then re-assessed following an instruction attempting to experimentally enhance awareness. The CTD group demonstrated lower interoceptive accuracy than controls but, importantly, this group difference was no longer significant following instruction. In the CTD group,

BACKGROUND: Myofascial release (MFR) is used to restore tissue extensibility of the fascia tissue and is considered to be useful in a number of clinical settings such as low back pain, ankle injuries, fibromyalgia, and headaches. There is, however, despite the popularity of MFR in manual therapy, little consensus on whether it leads to biomechanical, systemic or interoceptive outcomes.
AIMS: This study aimed to explore the immediate biomechanical (increased elasticity for increased range of motion), systemic (local vs. distal areas of pain threshold) and bodily awareness effects (interoceptio

OBJECTIVE: Fear of hypoglycemia (FoH) is a limiting factor for diabetes self-management and can have detrimental effects on quality of life. However, relatively little is known about its underlying mechanisms. In line with findings on patients with anxiety disorders, we hypothesized that interoceptive accuracy (IA) might be positively linked to FoH in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
METHODS: 133 patients with T2DM were screened according to the extreme quartiles of the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey worry subscale (HFS-W). Overall, 66 participants (HFS-W<4; HFS-W>17) were included in the pres

The ultimatum game (UG) is commonly used to study the tension between financial self-interest and social equity motives. Here, we investigated whether experimental exposure to interoceptive signals influences participants' behavior in the UG. Participants were presented with various bodily sounds--i.e., their own heart, another person's heart, or the sound of footsteps--while acting both in the role of responder and proposer. We found that listening to one's own heart sound, compared to the other bodily sounds: (1) increased subjective feelings of unfairness, but not rejection behavior, in res

Association studies and rodent models suggest a major role for BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) in feeding regulation. Altered BDNF blood levels have been associated with eating disorders (ED) and their related psychopathological traits. Since the influence of BDNF on self-reported eating disorder inventory scores (EDI) has not been tested, we investigated the correlation of EDI scales with BDNF plasma levels. BDNF levels were measured by (ELISA), and the EDI questionnaire was administered in a total of 81 ED patients. The relationship between BDNF levels and EDI scores was calculated

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-36) amide (GLP-1) is processed from proglucagon in the distal ileum as well as in the CNS. In the periphery, GLP-1 acts as an incretin factor and profoundly inhibits upper gastrointestinal motility ('ileal brake'), the latter presumably involving the CNS. Within the CNS, GLP-1 has a satiating effect, since administration of GLP-1 into the third cerebral ventricle reduces short-term food intake (and meal size), while administration of GLP-1 antagonists have the opposite effect. In addition, activation of GLP-1 receptors in certain brain regions elicits strong taste av
