Peutz-Jeghers polyps (PJPs) are hamartomatous polyps that may define patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), a rare inherited polyposis syndrome with high cancer risk. However, the clinical significance of 1-2 sporadic PJPs (without other PJS stigmata) regarding malignant potential and identification of new PJS probands is still unclear. We identified 112 patients with 524 histologically confirmed PJPs and categorized them based on polyp number into syndromic (n = 38) if ≥3 PJPs or diagnosed PJS, solitary (1 PJP, n = 61), and intermediate (2 PJPs, n = 13). Clinicopathologic features, inclu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gastrointestinal polyps are commonly encountered during childhood and are one of the most common causes of rectal bleeding in this age group. Most polyps are benign and located in the colon, with the most frequent type being juvenile polyps. However, in older pediatric patients, if multiple polyps are present, in patients who have a positive family history, or if polyps are located outside of the colon, either adenomatous polyps or polyps associated with genetic abnormalities are more common.
RECENT FINDINGS: Imaging techniques such as ultrasound and computed tomographic co

INTRODUCTION: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is characterised by a combination of hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps and mucocutaneous melanin pigmentation. The polyps occur mainly in the small bowel and can lead to intestinal obstruction, intussusception and bleeding. Until only a few years ago, primary surgical resection and intraoperative endoscopy and polypectomy were the only available means of treating polyps in the mid-small bowel in these patients. With the introduction of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE), we now have not only an improved diagnostic tool but also a non-surgical treatm

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of jejunum is a very rare nonneoplastic lesion of gastrointestinal tract. We reported a 66-year-old male who presented with abdominal fullness, colicky pain, and vomiting for 4 days. Plain abdomen showed intestinal obstruction with dilated small bowel loops. The exploratory laparotomy was performed under the clinical impression of intussusception caused by small bowel tumor. The diagnosis of an inflammatory fibroid polyp causing jejunojejunal intussusception was confirmed after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) sometimes suffer from obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Portal hypertension (PH), common in cirrhosis, induces esophagogastric varices. Because of the location, PH also may influence mucosal abnormalities in the small intestine. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of small intestinal mucosal abnormalities in HCC patients using capsule endoscopy (CE).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively conducted CE in HCC patients, and analyzed the findings in relation to hepatic function, the number and size of HCC tumor and f

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to review the ultrasonographic features of secondary intussusception (SI) in children and assess the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of pediatric SI.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective analysis on the ultrasound findings of 1977 cases of primary intussusception (PI) and 37 cases of SI in children. The SI cases were diagnosed by ultrasonography and confirmed by laparotomy or histopathologic diagnosis. The clinical and ultrasonographic features were analyzed and compared between these two groups.
RESULTS: The age, no flatus or defecation,

An 84-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a massive lower intestinal bleeding (LIB). The enhanced CT showed extravasation of blood in the sigmoid colon during the arterial phase. After discussion with the interventional radiologists, we proceeded to perform emergency colonoscopy that demonstrated massive gushing of blood from a pedunculated sigmoid colon polyp. The polyp was removed by snare polypectomy, which resulted in complete haemostasis. The pathological finding of the resected lesion was a tubular adenoma.

BACKGROUND: The distinction between intestinal Behηet's disease (BD) and Crohn's disease (CD) is always challenging due to many overlapping clinical features. We conducted a retrospective study to reveal valuable strategies for the differential diagnosis between intestinal BD and CD in Chinese patients based on their clinical and colonoscopic features.
METHODS: Thirty-five intestinal BD patients and 106 CD patients hospitalized from January 1983 to January 2010, who had ulcerative lesions in the terminal ileum or colon under colonoscopy and no history of gastrointestinal operation except appe

INTRODUCTION: Peutz-Jegher's syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that typically manifests itself as recurrent colicky abdominal pain and blood loss in stools. In adults, it is only rarely accompanied by frank intussusception and intestinal obstruction. We encountered an adult Asian Indian male who presented with an intestinal obstruction due to jejunoileal intussusception. It was caused by a 3.5 cm large hamartomatous polyp of Peutz-Jegher's syndrome. We feel reporting the unusual presentation of this rare condition may be a noteworthy contribution to the scarce literature on Peutz-

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. Most colorectal cancer occurrences are sporadic, not related to genetic predisposition or family history; however, 20-30% of patients with colorectal cancer have a family history of colorectal cancer and 5% of these tumors arise in the setting of a Mendelian inheritance syndrome. In many patients, the development of a colorectal cancer is preceded by a benign neoplastic lesion: either an adenomatous polyp or a serrated polyp. Studies carried out in the last years have characterized the main molecular alterations occurring in colorectal ca

Intestinal intussusception is infrequent in adults. Unlike what happens in kids, it shows a demonstrable etiology in most cases: polyps, lipomas, hamartomas, malignancies, etc. Among diagnostic methods, CT scan is the study that yields the best results for the diagnosis, giving forth pathognomonic signs and favoring therapeutic decision-making. Two cases of intestinal intussusception in adults secondary to benign pathology are analyzed, stressing mainly the tomographic findings and some considerations about therapeutic decision-making based on tomographic results.

Intestinal pneumatosis is a rare entity of unclear etiopathogenesis characterized by the presence of gaseous cystic or linear collections within the intestinal wall. Intestinal pneumatosis may be primary and idiopathic in origin or, more frequently, it accompanies various clinical conditions. Rarely, the development of intestinal pneumatosis is attributed to the pharmacotherapy with different drugs. This is a case report of cystic pneumatosis limited to the large intestine with predominant clinical presentation of chronic watery diarrhea in a 64-year-old man suffering from diabetes mellitus tr

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract, accounting for the second most common cause of gastrointestinal tumors. As one of the intestinal barriers, gut bacteria form biofilm, participate in intestinal work, and form the living environment of intestinal cells. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of the gut bacteria in a large number of CRC patients has been established, enabling specific microbial signatures to be associated with colorectal adenomato-carcinoma. Gut bacteria are involved in both benign precursor lesions (polyps), in situ growth and

A case of gastric hyperplastic polyposis is reported in a 48-year old woman, with iron deficiency anemia. An hyperplastic gastric polyposis was discovered. This patient had been operated 17 years previously for a large adenomatous polyp of the caecum. Her son had also several adenomatous polyps of the right colon. A gastrectomy was performed. Hyperplastic gastric polyposis is very rare, and is quite always associated with colorectal adenomas. The relationship between gastric hyperplastic polyposis and intestinal polyposis is not quite clear.

The radiographic appearance at double contrast enema of 33 cases of invasive cancer on adenomatous polyps (AP) of the colon is reviewed. The radiologic diagnosis of malignancy was prospectively made in 54.5% of the cases. In 45.5% of the cases, malignancy was not suspected at the time of examination. The endoscopic appearance of these lesions was identical to that seen on the barium study. There are no radiologic criteria able to entirely rule out the possibility of a carcinomatous transformation of an AP. However, the radiologic features of malignancy (indentation of the intestinal wall and/o
